Find me a bargain - Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or online?

Hi All,

Not sure if this is right forum, please move Mods if I have posted incorrectly. I am heading off next week (on Scoot) to Singapore and KL. I have a few items that I need to buy between now and Xmas and I was wondering where the best places would be to get a bargain. You guys are all so knowledgeable I was hoping for some tips. My list is:

Ultrabook
WiFi 4G Modem for use in Australia
External IPAD storage (MAXELL AIRSTASH or similar)
Running Shoes
Laser Printer Cartridges

Also - any tips on currency exchange? I have a SUNCORP Debit Card and an AMEX. I have been slack and haven't gotten round to getting a 28 degrees card. Cash exchange?

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

  • In KL, use cash where possible. Only exception is a big department store where credit card fraud is less likely.
Singapore is ok to use credit card, except when eating in a hawker centre.
Changing AUD to local currency is a better rate in SG or KL
Toner cartridges are best bought in Australia. They are bulky. Save your luggage space for overseas purchases.
Get your GE 28 degrees MasterCard if you can. It is excellent for overseas usage.

Running shoes - I have bought in Singapore for much cheaper than Aust. Go to the major shopping centers. There is always a pop up sale somewhere on sports gear, which includes running shoes. Note that Asian sizing is slightly smaller than Australia, so try on clothes or shoes you buy in SG or KL.

    Happy travelling

    • Thank you!

  • DO NOT USE AMEX in SG OR MY. You have been warned. i am from malaysia. lol. the majority of the merchants there do not accept AMEX. and even some do, they MIGHT charge an extra 1 or 2% on top of your sales.

Cash is better in most cases as i believe you would be eating at roadside stalls which they wouldnt have any card machine.

change it here. you get better rates.

you can get running shoes there.

toner cartidges just get them from online and save your weight. (compatible ones do just fine)

external ipad stroage (try seagate wireless?) you could buy them here (when theres sale which would end up being cheaper).

ultrabook (bear in mind that many models carried in south east asia is not carried in australia (hence the warranty issue, although is may be worldwide, you have to wait ages because they have to ship in the parts)

4G modems only in SG. KL 4G is entirely different. the 4G modems in SG run on either 1800 or 2600 MHz or both. so if you want to bring them back for telstra or optus, it HAS to be 1800 MHz. (but it is safer to buy here due to warranty issues too)

does that answer all your questions?

    • Thanks! Very helpful information.
