What's The Best Budget 4k 42" TV for Netflix/YouTube/PS4?

Hi all,

I'm looking for recommendations on the best budget TV to go into my son's room.

I'm looking for something in 42-50" size. When I upgraded our living room TV to an OLED recently, I tried putting the old 65" Sony Bravia into his room but that proved to be an absolute overkill and a terrible viewing experience (unless you're a chameleon) and I ended up selling it instead.

No set budget, I just want to make sure to hit that sweet spot of quality and price where I'm not overpaying for gimmicks but also not getting a barely functioning unbranded turd from Kogan.

From an initial browse, two models come to mind:

-Hisense 43 Inch 4K UHD Smart TV 43A7KAU (Currently $690 from Costco)
-TLC 50 UHD 4K TV P745 ($620 from Costco)

It would be nice to future proof the purchase as I don't want to upgrade it for at least 5 years. OLEDs are out as they are still a bit too pricey and burn in can be an issue with PS4. Perhaps there's something in the QLED space that can also be an option?

Your thoughts and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Depends. Do you buy a new phone every year?

    • Nop, ordered an s23+ a few weeks ago to replace my s20+. Would keep it even longer if not for the battery issues on phones this age.

  • Get a 2nd hand Sony/LG, don’t go for a low end unit.

    • I never buy second hand electeonics as a general rule. I look after mine very well and sell them, but never buy used. Just personal preference.

      • These days you even get ACL warranty on units that are under a few years old. You get much better value 2nd hand than new.

  • I'm in a similar boat. Might start my own post, but just wanted to ask, why did you get rid of the Sony 65"? I would have thought that would still be a lot better quality than a current cheaper model. When you say "overkill," was it just too big for his room?

    • Yeah, waay too big. I managed to sell it for a very good price so no regrets. It was a 6 year old model that's been used for 5 years. (KD-65X75000)

I would have thought that a budget model these days would be on par with most panels from 6 years ago. Maybe I was overly optimistic.

My son is 6, going on 7 so a ps4 is plenty appropriate for what hes playing :) Ill buy a PS5 when next gen comes out :)
