2021+ Hilux Dual Cab Baby suitable

Hi Oz,

Looking at getting a car through our business which will be driven by the wife most of the time (An employee of the company). Has anyone put a baby seat in the back? Was it suitable to get in and out? Anything worth mentioning or thinking about?

    • Putting suitable fitting boxing gloves on all their hands and feet helps with seat kicking. Bonus because it also stops nose picking, thumb sucking etc. The extra weight also tires them out quickly. Just be careful they don't break out into a prize fight if there's two little tackers .
(Though that also negates seat kicking)

    • I ruled out buying a hilux for the lack of back seat space. At 180cm my head was on the roof lining.

    • Thanks for the Info. Any chance you can share a picture of your backseat layout? And what it looks like from the passenger seat?

    • What sort of jetski have you got?

      • None, can’t swim :(

        • I hope you are joking. Do you want me to teach you?

          • @brendanm: Nah I legit couldn’t swim to save my life . I was a sickly kid growing up so basically skipped all the HPE classes. Now feel too embarrassed to learn as an adult. Imagine that - too embarrassed to learn a survival skill.

@Jimothy Wongingtons: That sucks, but nothing to be embarrassed about, you should go and learn, great skill for the kids as well. You need to do it if you live in Qld on the coast 👍.

              • @brendanm: Haha I do get cold sweat everytime I go out on the waters - one side, wow I could die if I fall in.

Other side, wow, I could die if I fall In.

more than sufficient. tray size is 1645mm x 1570mm

      so dog crate for bubs?

  • forward facing is fine. rear facing will be tight for the front passenger. Dual cab hiluxes are surprisingly small inside so there is not much room in the back seats at all.

Not a hilux, but have experience with a twin cab 4wd:

Check the rear seat room before you buy.

Don’t forget that everything else will need to go in the tray. Pram, groceries, luggage etc. you’ll need to make sure it’s water tight and dust proof.

Lifting stuff in and out won’t be easy as it’ll be higher than most other cars. The back doors can be surprisingly small.

Does have benefits for strapping bub into the seat for a tall person, but might be a struggle if you’re vertically challenged.

    • Simple, join the canopy gang (love my arb one)

      • As long as a canopy fits your use case. I don’t have a canopy and use the ute for tall stuff often enough that I’d have to consider a trailer.

        • Fair call, i have been caught out a few times where tray would have been great.

@Jimothy Wongingtons: If I was going to have a canopy, I’d rather have a wagon style body for longer items to fit inside.

Opposite, IMO. (Unless you're vertically challenged)
    or
Unless you have a suspension lift or giant wheel diameters.

The tray and rear seat will likely be further from the ground than other vehicles. Sometimes this is good - tall person won’t need to bend down to put kid in.

Sometimes it’s not great, gotta lift the pram extra high to put it in the tray, harder for little kids to climb in etc. I took the side steps off my ute when they got bent, had to help my kid in for a few months until they grew.

  • 'average to' tall person won’t need to bend down to put kid in.

  • Probably not enough weather protection in the back. I’d say it’s not legal either.

  • ATO reporting in here… more details about the business please….

    • Lol trade business. Accountant said it's fine.

Just remember anything over 1t payload must have a log book in order to make any claims. If the missus is using it most of the time the private use won't be able to be claimed as a deduction

        • Tell that to thousands of farmers using the RAM for shopping, school runs, holidays, boat towing, pig hunting, political meetings etc, and using 'way cheap' tax payer sponsored fuel rebates.
Accountants can do most things, farmers accts can walk on water

Have you driven one? I use a work one regularly and they are a poor driving experience. Noisy, uncomfortable and thirsty. Not sure how good they would be in a rollover either?

  • Herald Sun reporting today that there will be a ATO crackdown on Utes being used for private purposes.

Headline: "tradies utes in ATO sights"

note that the word 'farmer' is nowhere to be seen. Protected species
