Hi all, I've been looking into getting a CarPlay unit for my car, was thinking about getting a dash mounted one but really want the steering wheel controls.
Would prefer wireless but happy to get a wired unit.

how much did it cost for installation?
Was about 350 for parts plus installation for the head unit, IIRC. I had the installer provide the parts as this was easier.
Email around and get a few quotes once you know what head unit you want.
You could also attempt installation yourself. I've done this once before and it's not too difficult.

Autobarn quoted me (only the work) $450 (front + rear speakers and head unit) then the Aerpro installation kit for another ~$250 plus anything else needed for the installation.
I decided to do it myself: ~$80 for fascia and 2 electrical connectors from car to the head unit, ~$40 2 pairs of speaker adaptors, ~$20 new upgraded speakers wire (that is the hardest and trickier job and Autobarn didn't quote it) plus some other little stuff like wire connectors, tape etc. etc.
I'm really enjoying doing it and I don't care how long it'll take but I save a lot of money!
it's not too difficult
I agree only if you know how to do it :)
What have you found using your favourite search engine and what is your budget?
ive been looking at then DMX7522S but it seems like it doesn't include radio
Does your dash hold a standard sized 2din radio or is it one of the stupid integrated things that require a new fascia as well?
Not sure it’s a standard 2009 Kluger, would you know?
@eckers19: No idea. Never owned a kluger.
@eckers19: If it's a KX-R or KX-S, it will have a 200mm Toyota double DIN space. If it's a Grande, you'll need to obtain a fascia kit or a fascia from a lower grade variant.
ISO standard is 180mm. Kenwood make units that are mostly plug and play for Toyota and in 200mm width size. The reversing camera feed can also be relocated from the pissy little trip computer screen to the larger aftermarket screen.
@PinzVidz: And is there steering wheel controls built in, like would this be hard to do myself?
@eckers19: Yes, they have OEM SWC compatibility.
@PinzVidz: And if I know nothing about cars how hard would this to myself?
@eckers19: If you're fitting to a KX-R or KX-S (Altitude as well), it should be a fairly straight forward changeover if you fit either a DMX820WS or DDX920WDABS as they have plug and play for power/front speaker and rear speaker connectors. You may need an adapter for the SWCs as earlier model Toyotas use a 16 pin SWC connector and the later use a 24 pin connector. The Kenwoods suited for Toyota use a 24 pin. 16 to 24 pin harness adapters are available at Toyota parts. You'll need to splice/solder/insulate in speed and park brake signal feeds.
The reverse camera feed relocate might be out of your league though as the loom to the trip computer needs to be opened up and modified to feed to the aftermarket head unit.
If you look at a 180mm unit, it'll be more work - you'll need ISO harness adapters and there will be more soldering involved, including the SWCs as they come with a 3 wire loom instead of the 24 pin Toyota plug. You'll also need need 10mm trims for either side of the unit to fill the gaps.
@PinzVidz: Seems a bit confusing but it’s crazy that dealers are charging $1000 for all this, is there a place I can find cheaper?
@eckers19: $1000 labour? Nah, $200-$300 at the most. Add a bit more if you want the reverse camera feed relocated. Find a reputable mobile fitter. Or, ring Kenwood and they will recommend one for you.
@PinzVidz: $1000 with them providing the unit
@eckers19: Shop around. Also, the Kenwoods can be picked up at a good price on eBay when there's any of the "xx% off" offers available.
@PinzVidz: But does the kenwood come with all the parts needed to install it, like the steering wheel etc
@eckers19: If you look at the Kenwood models I listed, yes. Providing you are fitting to one of the variants I listed and not a Grande. For the SWCs to make it plug and play, the adapter harness at Toyota parts by memory is a PZQ60-00141 (around $15 or so).
edit: the older Toyota SWCs used a 20 pin plug, not a 16. Newer is 28 pin, not 24. Been a while since I've worked on them. The PZQ60-00141 harness will be a 20 pin to 28 pin.
is there steering wheel controls built in
Certainly, head to AU Aerpro, set your car model and the head unit and you'll get the full list of the accessories.
Are you going to use the onboard amplifier?
Are the installed speakers' wires good enough?
In my case (Ford Fiesta) I decided to replace the wires and that is the hardest part but it depends on you.
Also the recommended speakers' adaptors were not fully compatible so I had to do some modding.
@billadm: So it would probably be easier to get someone else to do it for me?
Aliexpress
way too many options, its also hard to tell which are good and bad
Honestly all i did was type in my model, and as long as it's >$200 you can't really go wrong.
Have bought 2 off there, first i had for 6 years before selling the car, newest one is 1.5 years in and works great.
Got our schmicko all bells and whistles $500+RRP unit for $385. Hasn't been the same low price since.

Teyes CC3 2k with one of their Kluger kits?
I'm waiting for my Kenwood DMX7522DABS, this brand is in direct competition with Alpine and it offers more value for the money.

How much did you pay for yours?
anyone used/heard much about these? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/815906
I asked a similar question recently - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774354 - but for AA.
I ended up with a Sony AX6000 unit recently. It has been pretty good. I tried out units in-store and found this one to have a fast startup time and to be responsive.
I used an installer and got a dashcam installed at the same time.
You can check https://aerpro.com/ for the parts required to adapt to your vehicle.
