[QLD] Wine and Spirit Bottles Added to 10 Cent Recycling Program

From November 1st, the Qld Government is adding wine and spirit bottles (150 ml - 3 litre) to the 10 cent recycling program. They don't have to have the 10 cent label or barcode as other containers do.

Might as well start saving them now! Just be sure you stop buying the ones larger that 3 litres if you want to benefit from this!

  • More incentive to empty your vodka bottles faster.

Will need to do the maths again on casks v bottles.

    • 44 standard drinks in a 5L $14 cask, vs 22 standard drinks in 700mL $35 vodka bottle. Or $34.90 if you want to adjust for the 10 cent refund.

  • Pretty sure NSW are going to do the same

  • In our household we cant drink beer or lager much, so mainly wine, whiskey and other spirits.
Feel guilty to chuck away nice-looking spirits bottles in the past years but had no choice.

So very pleased to see the announcement a couple of months back, and have been saving all our bottles.
Probably not enough to buy another bottle but better than throwing into the Bin.

The hardest bit is to lug the bottles to the Exchange, and slip it thru the chute one-by-one.
Hoping to find somewhere where I can take bottles in milk-crate. Will start looking.
    Cheers!

Try the recyclers on Fairfield Rd near Rocklea if you live on the southside.
I just take bags & milk crates there, find they are real good and pay cash.

        Oh wow, thanks for that.
I dont really live close to Rocklea but happy to travel any day to check out our beautiful Suburb.
        You're a Champion!!

        • Goodna has one too.

  • In most areas you are already paying for recycling via council rates. Does that go to to landfill or get recycled is a seperate issue.

Under the cds scheme all bottles/cans cost an extra 12 or 13c at retail but the cost is paid by the producer when manufactured, not when sold (this is an issue of cash flow for small business). If you do return it, you get 10c back.

This is a (estimate) $160 million per yr business. The nsw epa paints it as a cost when in reality its a profit centre for Tomra.

Ironically a long time ago, milk was delivered in bottles and they were re-used, not recycled. Germany still has a huge beer bottle re-use scheme. But I guess that doesnt make profits for recycling companies …
