Why Is The Pixel 7 Pro Cheaper than The Pixel 7 at Both JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks?

My phone just went kaput on me (has had a severely damaged screen for a while) and I would rather not wait till the Pixel 8 launch in case of a potential price drop, so I had a look around.

Pixel 7 Pro for 900ish at the 2 retailers seems like a steal for what the phone offers, what's the catch? I did note that there is very limited stock of it at various Officeworks stores (because it's at the end of its retail cycle) is it simply because its clearance?

  • Most likely clearing out stock for the upcoming Pixel 8. If you're looking for the Pixel 7 Pro now, there's a few active deals that you can take advantage of

The Google Pixel 7, was discounted last month and has since gone back up.

  • +2

Probably not really worth them overthinking it. A computer probably told them they have too many Pros.

Since you said it happened at both JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks, there's probably a good reason.

Had you said it was just at Officeworks though, then the reason could have just been good old-fashioned silliness. On my recent trip to Officeworks they were selling WD 1TB and 2TB hard drives for the exact same price, it was baffling. The employee there reckoned it wasn't a pricing error either. Needless to say I took my free upgrade, the store made a sale, and the question of how they expect to sell the 1TB drives when customers could just double the storage at zero cost was left as an exercise to the poor eggheads working in Wesfarmers Logistics.

    • or maybe it's so you think you ripped them off when the 2tb is just rrp anyway

  • One store prices it lower and others match it so they don't need to provide price beat discount.

    • Isn't it better to just offer the lower price to only those who ask for a price match?

      • Profit wise probably yes, however, they are doing it due to brand recognition. They want to cement it in consumers' minds that they will always have the cheapest because they are consistently lowering their prices to match competitors.

  • There were deals last week for the Pixel 7 for under $700, so the Pixel 7 Pro being $900 sounds about right for pre-Pixel-8-launch-window.
