Pay as you go mobile plans + data (500MB-1GB/month): Amaysim?

Help me OzB!
I am tired of scabbing wifi from McDonalds to substitute for a lack of a mobile data on my Vodafone plan.
Time to grow up and get a plan with data!

I have been looking at Amaysim's pay as you go plans:
http://www.amaysim.com.au/mobile-plans/amaysim-as-you-go.htm…

I am trying to avoid a minimum monthly charge and would rather pay for what I use (currently $5-10 a month in calls excluding V2V minutes). At the same time I don't want to be ripped off with inflated call costs, poor data charges or high upfront fee. I don't expect my monthly data use to exceed 500MB and I will need to port my voda number into the new plan.

What to do?

Amaysim will certainly have lower per voice call costs than Vodafone.

For data AYG costs 5c per MB. To give you an idea, each time I turn on mobile data on AYG, check my mailboxes and perhaps take a squiz at OzB, it costs me between 10 and 15c. Things are a little different if you leave it on all the time, there is no rounding up to the next MB. But still you are up for about $25 in data costs by your own estimate. So perhaps you might want to add a 1GB data pack for $10 that lasts 30 days.

You might also want to look at the Woolies $29 for 45 days.

Porting is never a problem as long as you are not tied down in some way with a contract.

    • Thanks -your real usage info is great & in line with my likely use.

I have discovered the mobile spreadsheets on whirlpool. Live connect looks ok, possibly better than Amaysim provided I wanted to more to a $8-12 minimum spend.

Yes, I had considered LC also, but that kind of minimum spend is more like per quarter for me. With Amaysim the minimum spend is $40/year ($10 recharge per max 90 days). I can usually get a hotspot where I go and anyway nothing I fetch is that urgent. That was the main reason for tightarse me. :)

        • Thanks, you have provided many wise words.
I figure moving from voda is a no brainer:
VF: Flag:35, Call per min 88, SMS 28, No data
Am: Flag: 0, Call per min 12, SMS 12, Data 5/MB + free social media.

        • Yes, there's no reason you couldn't move to Amaysim right away while you consider your next step.

  • Just go live connected $12 plan? If you already use 5-10 bucks a month it makes sense?
I know its a min monthly charge but are you really going to save more than $5 going PAYG?

  • Thanks ch4rgd. I hear you, but I could not get the total yearly cost past the war office.

    • Hey robotdad, noticed your from adelaide. I drive past maccas holden hill every saturday night and see someone on their laptop at maccas every week. Could it be you? lol highly unlikly, but as they say adelaide is a small place ;)

PM me if it is you. I want to know if I really am psychic, lol.

      • Nada. I am known to drive to maccas on west tce to check prices while city shopping though.

        • Thought it was too good to be true, lol. :)
But you never know small Adelaide, it's happened before.
Sounds like data on your phone will be very beneficial.
A couple of years ago I was stuck on shitty Vodafone 50mb plan just before they brought out the 200mb on the $29 cap. Was annoyed. 50mb goes all so quick. lol
