How Much Mobile Data Do You Use in a Month?

On average, I use about 10GB mobile data every month (mostly during travel to office or when I am out and about). I have home internet which makes up for bulk of my data usage.
Mobile plans like 200GB a month make me rather curious as to how people consume that much mobile data in a month. I guess if you do not have home internet then your usage could be higher but surely it is not that common to not have home internet.

Thoughts?

boost + dual sim = never actually use main sim's data

Mobile plans like 200GB a month

I'm guessing most of these users don't have NBN at home and use the phone as a hotspot.

    • Fairly common in rural areas where a good 4G signal or 5G signal just kills satellite NBN, especially for reliability and more recently on price. That said, there are still a lot of places that just cannot get any form of NBN or mobile.

10ish gb a month, Im assuming which comes mostly from streaming music while driving.

I think most eligible bargainers order the 3 months
    free 150GB/mth plan here.

Mobile Broadband Data plan is also 3 months free, max 400GB/mth.

  • Been on boost yearly since December 2022. Have over 100gb. Used less than 7gb since

  • using mobile for home internet is cheaper (and possibly faster) than nbn if you only have modest data requirements

    • Also depending on reception. For whatever reason, my house (well, the whole property) is a reception deadzone, so phones (on all networks) get almost no reception. Because of this, NBN is considerably faster.

Regarding data, i use about 20-30gb, mainly through watching Youtube videos etc on public transport.

  • 2gb average, I work from home so wifi is the go to

but looking at my overall data usage, if I had no wifi, I would use average 35gb

  • With my wife and i on a legacy telstra plan with dafa sharing, we use about 30-40gb per month across four phones and two tablets used daily. That being said theres wifi at home and work, and our commute is about a 20 min walk each way so we dont really stream much either and when we do its usually audio.

I've always assumed the big users are those who take public transport daily and stream video on the go rather than downloading in advance.

  • I get 20 gigs a month and I've got over 200 banked. Home has Wi-Fi work has Wi-Fi… I don't use mobile data much

  • I assume most of my use comes from streaming or working from the train when commuting. I also used to use mobile data in a corner of the house/garden where wifi didn't reach but this has been resolved by upgrading router.

I generally buy the ~250GB Boost sim but just made it through ~10 months with the smaller sim.

Also, data usage for the month was massively reduced last month when I was on Vodafone due to the bad network in areas I was in.

  • I voted 200+GB so hopefully this confuses some tracking data stealing imps and results in us all getting cheaper data rates.

I'd rather the providers dropped the price of lower usage plans.

Minimum of $30 a month for 3Gb?? Ridiculous in comparison to a 50Gb plan at $50, it's literally ten times the price per Gb!

      • Was on 25 for 10 on optus with 5g (and previously optus sport). Number share was free for some reason.

        That's gone now.

On 34 with 50gb so will see how it goes

the thing about optus i like is being able to donate my remaining data to charity before end of cycle.. not entirely sure how it works

    • I run a charity and we were offered free sims from Optus with either a 6 month or 12 month period of use for people to which we provide support.

I read the conditions and there is a need to collect information and manage ongoing eligibility during the period of issue. I cannot recall if identifying information goes to Optus although the SIM would need to be activated, but I seem to recall the demographic and ongoing information collected was intrusive.

We are self-funded so don't need to supply personal information about out customers to other organisations to justify what we give to others. Many of our clients are recovering from mental health issues so we attempt to be unobtrusive. We go out of our way to treat people with respect and dignity and don't make people prove they are "worthy". Plus the tracking and review of the ongoing entitlement was considered onerous on our organisation which is 95% volunteer labour. We did not take up the offer.

That said, with traditional charities where there is already a need for intensive interaction via case managers, it would be less of an issue and it is worthwhile. It didn't fit with our ethos. We do provide the occassional pre-paid phone or SIM with credit purchased from our own funds or donated by others.
