Insurance Claim for Theft - Paying for My Own Police Report

Hello Ozbargainers,

Hoping to get some advice or input from the OzB community.

I had a locked bike stolen from my house. I don't have home contents insurance but luckily I bought it on my ANZ credit card so I am eligible to claim insurance using the card insurance.

I filed a police report with Victoria Police and have the report case number.

While making a claim, the insurer (ANZ credit card insurance is with Allianz Global Assistance - and oddly addresses themselves as the 'Travel Claims' department) insists that I order and pay for my own police report, from Freedom of Information, in order for them to investigate. My understanding is that VicPol don't give our police reports, even if you file it yourself.

Has anyone had experience with dealing with this insurer and is there anyway around this? I've been told that generally insurers can just use the Police Report case number for the claim, but this insurer is asking me to pay for it. I don't know if these guys are just hard to deal with given it is credit card insurance.

Thanks in advance

Is it travel insurance or contents insurance? I'm confused.

Where in the PDS does it talk about what you have to do when you make a claim?
Read that section, then get back to us.

      ^^^^^this^^^^^

      There will be a policy / process / T&C.

Whenever a business makes requests such as this ask them where in the PDS is this rule.

You should be in bed young lady

      • I am !

        Tired but annoyingly, not sleepy.

        • I know that feeling, very frustrating!

          • @brendanm: I hate that, but I find even worse is when you are very tired and sleepy, can't stop yawning, even tears coming out from tiredness, but your brain has apparently does a crap-tonne of speed and won't shut up.

            • @AdosHouse: Yep that is annoying, too many things to think about sometimes.

Just ask the police for a printout of the report, a copy for your files. If they ask you to pay, contact your local MP and say you just want a printout for your own copy, and shouldnt have to pay for that.

  • good night to everyone logical

  • Thanks for the feedback all, the insurance is 'complimentary insurance' with the credit card. Its under Purchase Protection Insurance, the cover seems to be designed for people travelling overseas, but it also says that the cover is for purchases made anywhere in the world. I wasn't on holiday, I bought it in Victoria and it was stolen in Victoria.

The Policy information Booklet states: "We expect you to report any loss or theft to the police or an office of the bus line, airline, shipping line or rail authority you were travelling on when the loss or theft occurred.

You should make reasonable efforts to obtain confirmation from whoever you made the report to as this may be the easiest way to provide evidence of the loss or theft. If you delay or fail to make a report and we are prejudiced by your delay or failure, we may be entitled to reduce your claim by the amount of prejudice we have suffered."

Doesn't specifically state they require a Police Report, but they are asking for it for the claims process.

      Are you sure you're covered?

      • Haha not sure now, they wont even look at the claim without the police report, which I guess I'll need to pay for to find out…

When you made the report, you should have been provided with 2 or 3 pages of a printout, that describes the offence, the value of your loss and the report number.

      Did you?

      • No, I wasn't - I was just told by VicPol to take the report number to the insurance company and that is all they need. I came back asking for the report and they said they don't give it out, it seems to be pretty standard by Victoria Police to not give out reports….

Last I checked, FOI application fee is $31.80. A no brainer for me. The fee doesn’t matter. What other choice do you have 🤷‍♀️

What about if the bike is only worth $30?

  • When you file the report (online) you can save as the print friendly version. Not sure what else is needed as it's unlikely the police will even investigate
