It's their policy to price-match
If the product and service are identical…
•Non identical products and services (inclusive of non identical warranties)
http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/content/Lowest-Price-Gu…
Also Note,
OW are not obliged to price match on clearance stock…
Excludes stock liquidations, customer special orders and contract pricing.
There was no "demanding" here, just walked in and asked about their price matching policy and if they priced matched Amazon … Quick, easy, they could have said no, they didn't and they had no qualms about it. The girl said it was a fantastic price!
Soon, the offline stores like OW will be killed by online retailers like Amazon. They cannot compete with them. Price match is a smart strategy, but some sale men just treat consumers as fools. This is their big problem.
they are not trained and OW doesn't have staff quality controls

No way, Amazon is just a fad, just like Tamagotchis…
Tried and failed to pricematch at OW Petersham NSW. Was told by the supervisor that there was an internal mail sent around to stores to reject pricematches with non-Australian websites.
to reject pricematches with non-Australian websites.
that would come under misleading advertising, if the products were identical…
The products aren't identical though, the warranties that accompany each product is different. And OW have clearly stated they won't honour products with differing warranties. There's no misleading advertising here.
i was commenting on the mail sent telling staff to
"reject pricematches with non-Australian websites."
not about this deal…
Ah ok. Yeah… that would be breaking advertised promises.
talk to a few officeworks staff on previous deal before, they do check on ozbargain's comment
and got rejected on pricematch.
I'm pretty sure OW are onto OzB by now.
There have been some great deals which have been hit and miss.
This is great to price match if you can be bothered waiting 30 mins for a response and/or made to feel like scum for asking them.
I've gotten to the point where i don't even bother anymore, if i can't get it at orignial retailer i wont bother.
Amazon got my money, just purely for the fact I don't have to deal with that type of behaviour .. sure couple of bucks more but I'll suck it up by not having that large Macca's meal for lunch tomorrow
:)
can be bothered waiting 30 mins
i've never had to wait more than a minute or two…
Each to there own and obviously there own local store.
I don't bother approaching OW unless i have solid 100% information from a Australia retailer.
I can't be bothered arguing and begging for a product. I'll let my money do the talking
A pretty good price for a portable HDD. I'm going to purchase one for work, so it'll be pretty useful.
Buying it directly from Amazon.
I guess so much for supporting local retailers. Can't blame us for trying to save $100 or more buying overseas. but if you feel guilty maybe you can donate the $100 you save to charity organisations yet better than contributing to those multimillionaire CEOs.
The 100 you donate will be tax deductable too.
great deal,I'll get one.
Up to 177
Just went to OW and was told the store had a message from head office saying no more matching overseas prices and specifically mentioned this hd. Apparently the product numbers and warranty period are not an exact match.
saying no more matching overseas
it has nothing to do with being overseas… it's because they have different warranties and that is excluded from price matching.
BREAKING NEWS:
OW has been told by their higher-ups that they cannot givethe hard drive to you for that price. I went in armed with the receipt posted above (in the same shop as it was sold 2 days ago) and the guy was a rude arsehole to me, telling me that under no circumstances could he give it to me for that price.
RIP Australian retail trade; why bother when it's cheaper to get it imported?
RIP Australian retail trade
it's not the same product… different warranties… it's in their price match policy
I understand that. I don't know why you paired that with the statement "RIP Australian retail trade" though.
Regardless of whether they should or shouldn't, you can get the product - and let's not argue over semantics - with the SAME guarantees of any Australian company. The change would literally be in the wording, not the actual things it covers - anyway yes, you can get the product for a HUNDRED dollars less online shipped to your door…that is why I made the above statement. Why would people bother to pay a hundred dollars more for something which is more inconvenient than clicking the mouse a couple of times?
I strongly believe they should because…it's business! It's a gesture of goodwill and it's money in their pocket, not an online competitors. Really awful business sense.
I would urge everyone here to complain to them via their website to show that we do not appreciate this, they have lost out on a fair bit of money and it just doesn't make sense.
Really awful business sense.
so is selling stuff below cost.
You're a right little Devil's Advocate, JV, aren't ya? ;)
Somehow I'm doubtful that this item breaks the $100 for cost. To be honest, I'm doubtful it would cost them $50, but I have no base for that assumption, so I'll stick safe with <$100. Add onto that, the discount for bulk-buying from the supplier etc etc they're pretty much on top with turning a profit.
If, as you allude, the cost of the hard drive is in fact more than the price Amazon seems to be able to let it go for, then I say again - woeful business sense in that they can't secure a better deal and even worse that they can't just suck up a loss of a couple of dollars to keep their customers happy.
The components would literally be pennies - I'd be surprised if the whole thing cost more than $5 to make including cheap labour, the licensing and shipping/transport would be the major cost and Amazon have got that covered for $100 cheaper without having to leave your house. Why would I buy this from office works at a roughly 40% premium?
If the difference were $5-$10 more at OW, I would have no issue picking it up there, I'd be supporting the industry and Australia at the same time, while picking myself up something at a reasonable price but this is blatant profiteering and there's no justifiable way that this is reasonably priced.
Are you just being Devil's Advocate or do you honestly believe that $255 (in-store pick-up) is a reasonable price, considering it is available online for $150 (postage included)?
Somehow I'm doubtful that this item breaks the $100 for cost.
I'd be very surprised if OW gets these for under $100 and sells them normally for $285…
I'd even be surprised if Amazon gets these from WD for under $100.
(MSY sell the 1TB for $150 and their margins aren't big…)
woeful business sense in that they can't secure a better deal
that would depend on how much WD sell these for in Australia… I doubt OW have much say in setting the price they buy at.
and even worse that they can't just suck up a loss of a couple of dollars to keep their customers happy.
what if they're losing closer to $50 per sale though?
Well it's clear we disagree, so there's not much point in talking about the cost of this or that. I'll just explain my reasoning behind the last statement you quoted.
Let me preface this with saying I don't believe they would be making a loss at all - this was just hypothetical.
As for what if they lose $50…they're a company whose PROFIT (not total takings - wages, supplier costs etc don not factor into this number, this is money in the bank for them) in the 2009-2010 financial year (couldn't find anything more recent) was $1.41 billion.
Let's say 100 people came in for this price-match deal they saw here on OzBargain which no longer exists, and that it's the extreme loss you believe it to be at $50 a sale. They lose $5,000 which would be significant to a small store-owner…not really to a company whose profit is such a high margin.
This would be good business sense in that they show the customers that they are fair and customer-focused, leading to a brand-recognition if that's the right term and probably life-long customers who appreciate the fact that they're appreciated.
I know that's why I personally shop at EB Games, for example - their customer service (both online and in-store) is impeccable and they will do right by you. Then same principles apply here.
This would be good business sense in that they show the customers that they are fair and customer-focused
I find them very fair and customer focussed. I've never had a problem with a price match where the products were identical…
They even matched this 2TB drive with the DSE offer last month even though it was a clearance and they didn't have to…
As long as they stick to their policy, I don't have a problem with them refusing this Amazon deal…
Given that you believe the cost of this particular hard drive, sold directly to the seller is around the $200-mark, I wouldn't have thought you would ever have a problem with them…
I bought this drive from OW full price (285) a couple of weeks ago, and I have no problem paying full price when needed.
But they only have a valid reason (It wasn't the same model/warranty) when someone here posted it. Before that they had so many lame excuses and practices (.com.au, receipt not from the same day, hiding stock, …)
Anyway, will see what happen next deal ;)
Can someone please advise how to buy from Amazon and get it shipped to Sydney? I get a message displayed at checkout saying that the item can not be shipped to the selected destination. Thanks
You need to use a home address (no PO boxes) and not have anything other than products amazon themselves sell in your cart.
Please note that the price is around $27 more now than when the deal was announced. Still cheaper than AU but not as cheap as it was.
Thanks for that - I didn't realise that. I had another item from another store in my cart!
That bit me on the hiney also. :)
Hi the discombobulated panda, another question please. do you know if there is a way to search for products amazon themselves only? or seach for products that can be shipped internationally?
Ordered from Amazon, arrived dead so I am returning it today. Hopefully I will be still able to match price with OW. Such a sadness!
I visited ow on the weekend and had the same answer they don't price matched amazon/non Australian store. I presented a number of receipts gathered from ozbargain across oz ow store price matching amazon. The manager was persistent with ow's price matching oversea policy but thinks changed after I brought up their t&c stating they are misleading, their policy is inconsistent across their store which is presenting flavourism and discrimination against my intellect and that I would be calling their head office and fair trade/accc to discuss matter further. After he reviewed the t&c he agreed that no where did it specify not allowing matched price against an oversea store. I got my price matched and an apology and ended up paying $152 :) btw it may sound I came at him abrupted/irate but I spoke in a easy tone and a calm state of mind with displayed intention of taking it further because I truly believe they need to revamp their t&c to make it clear regarding their price match policy if intended to matched against Australian store only.
Lucky for you that he didn't pick up on the fact that the warranty terms differed.
Off the topic: Did you guys have any problems formatting it with TrueCrypt?
No problems with having 1 "normal" and 1 truecrypt partition
It's their policy to price-match, so it's not our problem that they don't have more restrictions in their T&C's. Their refusal to do it by making up their own rules is what angers me. Oh well, if they don't want my money I'm happy to give it to Amazon.
