[NSW] No Toll Charges for The Cross City Tunnel during Sydney Marathon (Save $3.17 to $6.71 Per Trip) - Sun 17 Sep 5am to 3pm

231

While elite athletes on the surface stay fit running around the CBD, motorists can sit on their arses in their automobiles doing laps of a smoggy dirty dark tunnel. For those motorists who refuse to pay tolls out of principle, this is a good chance for you to experience one of Sydney's pieces of toll road infrastructure without paying a cent.

Details from Linkt email:

The Sydney Marathon Running Festival is on Sunday 17 September 2023.

Travel through the Cross City Tunnel will be toll-free on Sunday 17 September from 5AM – 3PM. If you have a tag, it won’t beep during this period.

If you travel through the Cross City Tunnel before or after those times, standard toll pricing applies and you’ll hear the beeps.

    How it should be always

Agreed. Makes no sense that harbour bridge is free one way but this one is paid on both ends

The money from harbour bridge tolls pays for the upkeep for the bridge.

        • So the toll is not privately owned? Not trolling, just want to know, I'm not from Sydney

          • @dangerdanger: The Bridge is owned by the state, some of (like most) of the other toll roads are under contract by private companies. If the tunnel and bridge were private, you would certainly not be getting a free ride one-way and discount rates at off-peak. The current owners are Transport for NSW, with other state and federal agencies dealing with some aspects.

        • 160k cars a day. Average of $3.50 toll, so $560k a day in roles.

In today's money the build cost would be $1.5b

          204m a year.

Funny enough I was sceptical, but maintenance cost of 15-20% wouldn't be far off….

          The math checks out

          • @itshammer: it probably would cost that much to maintain really. the paint alone would be tens of millions a year

          • @itshammer: The West Gate Bridge in Melbourne isn't tolled and a quick Google indicates that approximately 205k vehicles use the bridge each day.

I wonder how it is that one bridge that carries far more people isn't tolled, yet another one that carries less is tolled?

One thing is guaranteed, car drivers hate paying for what they use.

  • What is this 'Toll' you speak of?

Bargain, I'm going to do happy laps all morning in my 7 eleven helicopter

Oh nice … Just need to pay $20 in other tolls to get there to use this one for free.. 🤦🏻

  • What a joke. How about you don't drive for once.
