My google-fu is letting me down and I'm getting a little confused with all the information I'm finding so asking here for some guidance and clarification.
In bullet point form:
- Own 2 Nintendo Switches, lets name them Family Switch and OLED Switch.
- I have 2 cartridges of Pokemon. One is Pokémon Scarlet the other is Pokémon Violet.
- Family Switch is the primary console so my kids can play any of the digital purchased the games at home on any of their profiles.
- The OLED Switch is non-primary/secondary but it's usually just my profile that plays on there.
- We have NSO family membership and the kids have their own profiles (set as kids profiles)
- My kids will occasionally both want to play different games at the same time and one plays on the OLED Switch, including Pokemon even though there is no cloud cross-saving.
- Digital purchases only launch on the Primary Console (Family Switch) and my on profile on the non-primary Switch (OLED)
Now, my son has been asking me to purchase the new DLC for Pokémon Violet. I'm outraged at cost of the DLC as at full price it costs more than what I paid for one of the cartridge games thanks to that $49 deal.
I understand you have to buy the specific DLC for the game version you own. He primarily plays on Violet so we would look to purchase only that one.
I explained to him he could purchase it with his own money if he wanted the DLC and that it would only work on Violet. I also explained I wouldn't be able to join him or play with him using the Scarlet game on the DLC.
There's is this upcoming 20% off eShop cards deal which I'd like to take advantage of, however my understanding is the DLC won't launch on his profile on the OLED Switch because it's been purchased on my account.
If I wanted to have the DLC work on either Switch it sounds like I need to set up my Son's profile to use the OLED Switch as his account's 'Primary Switch' and then the Family Switch as a non-primary. Is this correct?
Does this also mean I would need to add funds to his Kids profile account and lose out on the full value of the eShop card if he's not making any other purchases?
Is this understanding correct? What is my best option here? It all seems so convoluted to say that these are my devices, let me play my games on them with separate save files.
We have a similar set-up regarding multiple Switches. The way the Sword/Shield DLC worked was by patching in the content to all copies to ensure compatibility and receiving an in-game item (train ticket I think) to be able to access the DLC areas.
The family Switch is set as my primary console, access to the DLC is granted to all profiles on that primary console, no issues.
The second Switch gives access to the DLC to only my profile (as the purchaser of the DLC) and has to run the eligibility check every time the game is launched - as you may have seen with non-cartridge games.
