Elite cultural institutions offering hefty ‘Mob Tix’ discounted access to concerts, art galleries and sports events

https://www.news.com.au/national/politics/elite-cultural-ins…

Notably:

No proof of eligibility is required to claim the discount

Not to mention it would be horribly offensive for anyone to ask anyway.

I've had a look and so far seen these discounted tickets on offer from the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and they're incredibly cheap (eg $13 for Birds of Tokyo concert with the SSO) but they are also, understandably and correspondingly, in less attractive locations and very very limited in number.

Edited to add: in addition to eligibility not being checked (and really impossible to check), all of the sites include wording that this includes "First Nations people of other countries" which surely has to include everyone because everyone is an original inhabitant of some place.

this includes "First Nations people of other countries" which surely has to include everyone because everyone is an original inhabitant of some place

Is this one of those things where you sort of smash the words in your head around a bit and decide you've come up with a definition that matches your circumstances? ("Well here I am about to go to JB Hi-fi to buy a CD and when I am done shopping I will be loading the CD into my car so here I am parking in the loading zone which I am obviously now allowed to")

    welcome back

    • +7

Yeah it's been a while but I see nothing's changed - HighAndDry is still unhappy about anyone below a certain tax bracket getting a break.

    • Thanks! Good to be remembered (and missed?)

Also, I don't get the cynicism - this was a genuine post, I think it's good that there's a cheap way for people to participate in what's generally considered "fancy", because it's useful exposure to another part of society which helps social mobility, and generally just because it's less gatekeeped.

I'm also obviously myself "below a certain income threshold" since I'm on this site to begin with; I generally just think people should be working for and earning the things they want.

In any case, if you're interested in these things, curious, or even if you're not, I think you should take the opportunity to check it out and try something new and different. Especially the Opera House thing - it's so iconically Australian that everyone should at least experience it once.

Better question, if there is one, is why we care? Most important should be life expectancy, health care, rate of incarcerated deaths, education, standard of living etc. Maybe when all of those things are fixed, I can feel upset by someone getting cheap tickets, or strange wording on cheap tickets. But my hope is that we don't lose sight of the bigger picture.

How dare those Elite cultural institutions offer discounts! They need to be maximising profits! Arghhhhh!!!!!!

Racist thread, trying to further torpedo the Voice referendum.

Ruperts racist rag still politically fellating the LNP.What a sleazy thread from a sleazier source and with the sleaziest motivations

      • -1

        so^ 'not a racist, but…

Both the rich and the homeless are equally forbidden from sleeping under a bridge - a tribute to equality.

  • +1

    James Macpherson, is that you?

  • +6

    Here we go.

Saying people shouldn't be divided into races and given different prices will be loudly and self-righteously declared to be "racist" by other posters.

Doing that, dividing them by race, and having different rules for different races will be declared as not being racist.

Just for once I like the people who look at people and put them in one box or other according to the race they have assigned to them to give me a definition of "racism" that somehow doesn't include their own way of thinking about other people and behaving towards them.

  • +7

You’re right maybe we should give them all their land back and have equal ticket prices.

    • -5

…their land? didnt they come here from somewhere else too, just like all of us?

It is generally held that Australian Aboriginal peoples originally came from Asia via insular Southeast Asia (now Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, and the Philippines)

      • +3

Pretty sure no-one here (when First Australians arrived) was raped, poisoned, murdered, dispossessed and in other ways oppressed and targeted by authorities for 240 years since first contact by that first arrival.
Counter evidence that First Australians were invaders displacing an earlier civilisation would validate your viewpoint

Counter evidence that First Australians were invaders displacing an earlier civilisation would validate your viewpoint

That's actually a historical viewpoint. That there were two migration waves and current Aboriginal populations are descended from the second wave of migration which largely killed off and displaced the first wave.

          • @Odin: Citation?

              • +1

@Odin: That's just a precursor intro to an abstract.
Can you link the part where the claim of " 2nd wave displacement took place on this continent", and what that timeline.

( Notwithstanding you won't find 240 years of focused genocidal policies as per the treatment we are generationally denying )

                • @Protractor: Can't find the precise one, but this is along the same lines: https://www.unsw.edu.au/news/2018/08/opinion--when-did-abori…

                  • @Odin: It's an opinion piece, and I'm specifically looking for your 'historical' claim one wave wiped out another existing populous.

                      • @Odin: 1st one claims 'genetic mingling' hardly the same as the current 240 YO model here.
2nd one just talks about confirming ex African DNA and how earlier tests from ancient DNA had used methods not as reliable as modern mtDNA testing. And reports how those findings inform the 'reality' of a migration here >45,000 years. In fact I read that it calls out the 'multiple waves' theory.

You need to find peer reviewed content that not only 'speculates' but proves the multiple waves stuff rather than keep adding links. Cut and paste something with the link to its' origins, lest there be more mythology = science , via web based discussions.

Not going to get into the argument you want, but I'm pretty sure lots of people here are from Asia, including places colonised by European countries, and/or occupied by the Imperial Japanese during WWII. It's pithy to say that it's not a competition, but it's really not. There are precious few peoples who haven't faced oppression and persecution sometime during human history.

          • @HighAndDry: And yet your HEAVILY invested in a colonial version of history in First Australians HOME country.
You're arguing in the is bogus thread about missing out on something, and you have one group in your sights.
            The R word mate
And I strongly suspect that you have a direct connection to the article you linked

            • @Protractor:

              1. I specifically mentioned that eligibility isn't checked so no one is missing out.

              2. This is the only thread I've posted so I don't know what I'm supposed to be invested in.

Look, you can be bitter about whatever you want but leave me out of it thanks.

              • @HighAndDry: says " no one is missing out." and yet is outraged. Go figure

                • @Protractor: Where's my outrage? I'm out, I've got better things to do with my Thursday night.

                  • -1

@HighAndDry: So if your not outraged, and yet posted this narrowly focused thread, you can only have a single motive.

  • +3

Institutions have policies in place to offer discounted tickets for their own reasons (predominantly based on the logic that the people eligible for the ticket don't have the same resources that everyone else does)

Maybe it's time to make a stand against this unfair and arbitrary treatment though.

Why should seniors and students get these sorts of "concessions"? They don't work anywhere near as hard as I do (and may I add I pay my taxes that are used to pay their benefits).

    • +1

I can hear the chardy induced screams from the AFL corporate boxes agreeing, as they touch base, ( via the latest iPhone) with theirmulti million dollar trust fund status at half time.
This faux outrage is all about not wanting to (1) lift or (2) share the space with that 'other kind'.Read racism

The Venn Diagram of those offended by such a ticket offer, and those that attend the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, is two non-overlapping circles anyway.

its just an excuse for rage bait for the sake of rage bait. Pretty easy News.com.au and Daily Mail audience engagement material

    • +4

Dunno about that. Some freaks come out for Wagner.

The full T&C's is self-explanatory; I can't see any problem with it:

The programs been running since March.
There's a pretty obvious reason why its click bait rage material within certain media agencies and its readership now but wasn't 6 months ago.

But hey, critical independent thinkers and all. No way they'd be so easily manipulated by such obvious editorial decisions.

    heres an idea….'poor tix'
you know for all of us poor bastards out here doing it rough irrespective of 'heritage'…?

    • Was going to respond that Ozb is for such people, but I often mistake Ozb as a place for people of limited means, and of course it's not.
It's about all those who love a bargain, colloquially known as tightarzes.
Would a collective noun be a pucker of ozbargainers? :)
