Moving Desktop Upstairs - Wireless Network Card

Looking to move my rig upstairs and want to know if i can use wireless since it not great for streaming or gaming.I am running a Thomson TG82T modem/wirless router from telstra would a wireless network card be a best option i stream alot and am a casual gamer.Since i have no physical phoneline connection upstairs

I was looking at this but unsure if it worth it as i heard telstra modem are not good for streaming/gamging so i think i might buy a aftermarket modem/router.

  • You may wish to test signal strength upstairs first.

Do you have a mobile phone with Wifi? Try going upstairs and then stream a Youtube video and see how well it plays on 1080p high definition.

If the signal strength is crap, then chances are whatever wifi adapters you use with your PC is not going to have any real impact on signal strength — you would need to somehow boost your wireless router's signal or extend it's range.

One cheap solution is to buy a high gain antenna for your router. The other is to buy another router and then set it up as a bridge or repeater.

3rd option is to use a Ethernet over Power adapter but your mileage can vary with this solution — some people have reported that it is slow/unreliable, and vice versa.

    • ah ok thanks i am getting 4/5 bars seem good with 1080p streaming no problems.

  • a long cat5 cable would be the cheapest option if you can route it easily.
