Lenovo Y580 forwarded from US

Hey, really liking some advice on the following..

I've been looking at a new laptop for sometime now and have decided from reviews etc. that I'll go with the Y580 (even though the trackpad is meant to be a pain). I've been thinking on getting this one http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPo… Right now there's a decent sale price of $999 which will stop customs issues(?). It has a higher rpm HDD than the other models, and was thinking I can also throw a SSD in there too down the track?. Warranty could also be an issue, but hopefully it won't be needed and the Y580 will be released here down the track.

Now considering this isn't available in Aus, I was considering a forwarding service. Cheers to nickj for suggesting http://www.shipito.com/ going through their service will be roughly $100 shipping (using approx. box dimensions). There's free shipping from Lenovo so that's sweet.

Can anyone see any flaws in my thinking or offer any other suggestions?
Cheers for the help!

  • just remember I guess you're tinkering around the GST threshold

    • Well our dollar is strong at the moment so that'll bring these prices down a few bucks with conversion to $AUD?

    • The customs website is melting my brain, is the shipping cost included in the $1000 limit?

      • Well the shipping cost will be the forwarders postage charges.. does it matter that it's a third party? That customs website bamboozled me too..

      • .

      • Just had another look at the customs site.. I'm guessing I should be fine as the value of the product is less than $1000, therefore they don't even go to the next step of even charging me their duty?

        See bottom of this page.
        http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5549.asp

      • I sent an email to customs asking this question, they replied "Freight charges are not considered as part of the threshold of $1000, only the cost price is. If the purchase price of your laptop is less than $1000, then it is a free import."

  • What do you guys think about 720p or 1080p. 720p is $150 cheaper and blu ray is not an issue as I have a PS3

    • I'm sticking to 1080p, 720p on a 15.6" screen is supposedly ass.

    • I bought this laptop because of the 1080p option as it means you can fit more windows on the screen. I'd definitely recommend the 1080p option if you can afford it.

  • Hey so I did exactly this nearly 4 weeks ago. I bought the $999 model through PriceUSA, it took 3 weeks for the laptop to get to their warehouse and I'm finally expected to be receiving it Tuesday/Wednesday. I ended up paying $1100 AUD which isn't bad, you may be able to get it a little cheaper using shipito if you pay for for it yourself on Lenovo, however PriceUSA was a very easy process. And you may not be able to purchase yourself on Lenovo as they may not accept your Australian credit card.

For a added discount of $60 follow these steps: (Unfortunately PriceUSA wouldn't do this as it is suppose to be a student deal.)

Please first sign up to Lenovo here: http://shoplenovo.i2.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/na/StdAffi…

Then log in with new account and go here:
    http://shoplenovo.i2.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/barnesnobl…

    Total price should be $939.00

The discount to bring it down to $999 has been there for a few months now, they just change the code.

I'm planning to add a 256gb msata when I have the cash to this laptop which will mean I can still keep both the hard drive and optical drive.

    • Cheers for the info.. may use those guys down the track.. think I'll go for this deal ( http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/79931 ) though at the moment, much easier.

That extra drive you speak of can just slide beside those others yeah?

      • Sort of, it's actually in the form of a mini PCI-card.

Shouldn't be too difficult to install though you may need to find a spare screw.

        • Decent.. use this as the primary OS drive and keep the HDD (or trade up to a standard SSD) for storage..

  • I'd be making sure there wasn't any sales tax that was going to be charged. I highly suspect there will be and that it will push the value above the magic $1000 figure.

  • Can it be cheaper?

    • That would have to be the eternal question of OzBargain…..

      Can it be cheaper?

Better yet, can it be free with StartHere cashback?
