Mobile Monster "As New"?

So I've just done the Samsung trade-in thing and I'm contemplating where to sell it rather than run the Asurion gauntlet.

I'm thinking maybe Mobile Monster to avoid the FB/GT cesspit of scammers. The phone is a Samsung S21. It's been in a case with glass screen protectors its whole life. Passes all diagnostics (I don't have any wired headphones to test that).

Does that equal as new?

  • What do their conditions state? Pretty sure they go through a questionnaire as you lodge it.

    • All I can see is:

"As New – These are phones that are in perfect condition. No scratches, no damage, no blemishes. It’s as if they have never been used."

      and

      As New Condition
No signs of wear (as new condition)
      No scratches or markings
Must have the complete box and manual
Must have a battery health level of a least 85%

Well… does your phone meet that criteria?…

        • I believe it should. Just looking for people's experiences with their assessments. Sounds like they like to find faults though.

  • I'm contemplating where to sell it rather than run the Asurion gauntlet.

You're happy to pay their admin charge for not handing the phone in?

    • It's $60. So I'd have to clear or go close to clearing $355 for it to be worthwhile. Monster offers $360 for "as new".

We traded in our iPhone which had been in a flap faced phone case and had a screen protector since day one. We dropped it off at the Melbourne HQ and the lady at the desk said it looked good. We got a message about a day later saying it had dints. We said “find just send us pictures to confirm”. They then said because the lady at the desk had accepted it they would consider it perfect.

To be honest I would still go to them to sell our phone, particular as the has an office in Melbourne. What I would do is video the phone all the way around and, if you are knocked back, ask for a photo of the problem.

  • I've traded in two iPhones with them thinking they were in 'as new' condition, having used cases and screen protectors all the time, no diagnostic issues. Both times they have claimed there were micro-scratches on the screen, even though I'm fairly certain there weren't. Ended up copping the loss and taking the working price (~$30 lower).

YMMV but be prepared that you might only get the 'working' price instead of 'as new'.

  • If you can, take lots of photos and videos in case they dispute the condition of the phone, and just ask for it back if they lowball you and don't accept your evidence.

  • Just thought I'd add my experience. Traded in my Pixel 7 Pro for "As New" as well, quoted price was $650 the backup price if not as new was $600.

This was still $100 more then JB's square space price which was $500

They apparently they found scratches on front, which I know was not the case. So I believe they are deceptive on that front. I sent it in knowing they might be dodgy with finding "scratches" and was still happy with the extra $100 over JB's.

Definitely takes longer but I was happy to wait an extra week and a half for an extra $100.
