GlenDronach 2012 The Whisky Show Exclusive 10 Year Old Single Cask Scotch Whisky $210 Delivered @ The Whisky List

90

I have a love/hate relationship with Glendronach. their older 20+ year PX Puncheons tend to be garbage so I avoid those. I prefer younger Oloroso butts. This is 10 years in an Oloroso Puncheon, which is a bit strange, but it's good. Price is high but not outrageous.

Their sister distillery Benriach is better don't @ me

  • Its all a matter of taste. but I have to say preferring Benriach over Glen Dronach means our tastes differ widely. Though I'll agree that the younger Glen Dronachs tend to be much better value

    • I've had 1 or 2 great 'dronach 20+yo px that were great out of 7 or 8, while most oloroso butts under 20 years I've had are great. that's just my exoerience though

The real value is in 20+ yo benriachs which can still had for under 500

      • OK, don't think I've had any of Benriach's 20+, I was so disappointed by those of their range I've tried I've never hunted down anything else. Now you've made me interested though. I'll see if I can find a tasting…

      • Is benriach twenty one good? Almost picked one up from qantas

  • I'm no mathematician, but isn't this a 21yo drop now?

    • +3

The age is determined by the length of time in the barrel until it is bottled.

        I know, but still

          it'd be 11

"I prefer younger Oloroso butts." … are they big?

    • smaller than puncheon, bigger than hoghead. I prefer them at 18 years

        Nice.

        You cannot lie.

Also, you'd prefer the GD CS series over this?

    • I can't rememeber the last time I had the CS, but the batches I had seemed consistent. If I didn't want to gamble, I'd get the CS

      • I had batch 9 recently. Much better than the Batch 10. For $140 I think it's pretty good value. They do a good job balancing PX and Oloroso in this series I've found.

  • $210 for a 10 year old CS is intense when there's still the ability to find GD21s in the wild for a similar price

    • Mmm, not really comparable

      • Well I recently got a 21 year bottled in 2020 (so when it stated non-chill filtered and was actually 25 years) for the same price. I'd much rather that ngl

        • Sure thing. If age = goodness to you.

          Same with the older/first 12, 15 and 18's

          • @kickling: Thinking age is the main factor in determining whether a whisky is good is simplistic.

I'd say the numerous reviews and nice 48% ABV are contributing factors. EOD you can get a specific review of a whisky/batch rather than getting a young sherried whisky which is highly likely to have the typical overblown youthful first-fill sherry profile (think Glenallachie 10, Glenfarclas 105) and not much else to it (which unfortunately age is usually a factor in allowing to develop)

            • @petro292: Alrighty.

In any case, in the words of the Whisky Tribe… The "best" whisk(e)y is the whiskey you like to drink, the way you like to drink it.

          • @kickling: The pricing is mainly my issue when a Glenglassaugh 9 year single cask can go for $110 from the same ownership group etc

        • +1

I got a Glendronach 21 that's actually 25 year old juice also in the collection. Can't wait to open her.

Age statement isn't all that important IMO. That the Whisky List commissioned it is

  • …. all gone!
