Hard Wearing Running Shoe Soles

Hi all, I have a pair of Asics Gel Nimbus 23 Mens Running Shoes and they’re great and comfortable but the sole wears out so quick just from mostly walking on concrete footpaths. I’m looking for good shoe recommendations that have a harder wearing sole. Are there any brands that do good impact protection and comfort but also decent wearing soles?

I have searched but couldn’t find any thread on this specific topic.

  • I suggest looking at walking shoes rather than running shoes.
    Different purposes.

    • These are for exercise including running and walking though. I don’t wear these to work.

Hmmm ASICS AHARs are usually pretty good. I have the ASICS novablast which uses them and they look pretty good after almost 1.5 years.

Though they may have changed the composition for the newer shoes?

Could be other factors too like: walking style, body weight, distance/time on the shoe

nike pegasus soles last ages… hard rubber that wears down slowly.

    • Ok thanks il check them out.

    • Pegasus lasts a long time. Ran over 650 KM in a pair of 38s and have hardly any wear on them. Excellent durability.

    • agreed

  • If you didn’t like the 23s don’t get the 24s ;-)

I have run in Nimbus for years and the last few iterations the outsoles have gone softer. 23’s have been by far my favourite pair but their outsole isn’t great. My shoes tend to be good for about 1000km (I run 30km a week split up in 3x 10km runs)

Suitable options I’ve found: Saucony Triumph 19, Mizuno Wave Sky 6. Both are close to the 23 for comfort but both have better wearing outsoles. The Saucony I don’t run as much in but the Mizuno I do. If you walk I think the Mizuno is better than the Nimbus 23 but I prefer Nimbus for running

If you’re an asics guy you may not like like a Nike. Outside of running my sneakers are full of Jordan’s, Air Maxes and Huaraches but I’m not a fan of dedicated Nike running shoe as I find them unsupportive through the shoe construction itself, my feet tend to move around a bit more in the shoe

    • My Mizuno Wave Rider has done 1,600km and it's still going. One ugly shoes and the plastic wave plate in the heel makes it quite clunky to run in. But the rubber outsole just seems to last forever.

      • I guess I may have to sacrifice looks but hoping not too much…

    • Yeah I’m not a fan of Nike for running I do like ASICS it’s just the sole I’d almost worn through and rest of shoe is in great condition.

    • How many kms have done in 'em?

      • yes

  • It’s hard to say exactly, I probably walk at least 2 kms 3-4 times per week in them and had them just over a year so that’s roughly 400km so doesn’t seem like a lot. I may have used them on a treadmill some other days but not every week.

    • …walk at least 2 kms 3-4 times per week…

If that is the extent of your use (plus the occasional treadmill), I'm not convinced that running shoes are what you should be buying.

      • What do you suggest for running then as I do run as well.

How often and how far do you run?

  • I religiously have used Asics Nimbus for many years. Generally get about 1000 running kms out of them before they lose their cushion and then use them for general walking shoes after that. The sole never wore out that much, the fabric above the toe area starts tearing well before that so I throw them out when that happens.

  • Harder wearing soles will not provide as much grip.
