http://www.compingclub.com/
you will get spammed big time
compingclub and lottos, use to be into the comps and won alot. its very time consuming though, rarely get a chance to enter anymore
Also, install a copy of Roboform. Makes entering forms for competitions so much easier.
readersdigest …and you will get spammed forever, especially when u request to be taken off their mailing list !!
TL;DR version: there's probably a strong selection bias in comping success stories - not many people will bother relating a pretty ordinary experience like that below :)
I experimented with 'comping' a few years back as a member of lottos.com.au for a couple of months, entering 350 comps over the period, keeping a complete record of each entry. Found it pretty mind-numbing, and the only significant success was $250 from a yogurt brand. Apart from that, all I "won" was a movie ticket (sold for $10) and bottle of shampoo and conditioner (gave to a friend).
That was based mainly on 'chance' comps. I generally didn't enter "words or less" comps, which are common in Australia due to the regulations imposed on 'chance' comps in certain states, but can be very fatiguing if you don't have a knack for pithy phrases relating to a business or product. WOL is likely what the most successful 'compers' are good at.
Had a better ROI over the years with comps I happened upon myself, e.g. in the supermarket or a catalogue, which required a small purchase of things I regularly buy or needed anyway. Far less time and effort entering those comps, which nevertheless got me $100 from a nut company and $100 from Australia Post.
Contrast that with new bank account bonuses taken advantage of thanks to OzB over the years - those have added up to $360 and, compared to comping, required little time and effort and had a high certainty of outcome.
Two main susprises I found from comping. One was the lack of spam - received almost no junk snail mail (the only one I can recall is a travel brochure from a government tourism agency), and the although my e-mail inbox dedicated to comps became very active for a time, it fell to a trickle after clicking unsubcribe links. Just stay away from Readers Digest as already mentioned :)
The other was the number of online comps that, in their T&Cs, permitted unlimited entries, allowing those with the tools and inclination to run a bot that generated thousands/millions of valid entries, so perhaps that's one angle for achieving better returns.
I go on freesamplesaustralia.com - more about competitions rather than free samples, but you get a decent mixture of both.
