TOU with a Non Smart Meter

Hi all,

I was wondering how Energy Australia is able to charge me a TOU tariff when I have a non smart meter.

I keep reading that the meter wouldn’t even record that information?

Am I missing something?

  • No they will not. If you meter is not smart, how exactly they are supposed to measure time of use?

    • -2

      They use the 'honesty' system.

  • Why wouldn't you go straight to Energy Australia and ask them?

  • Yeah something doesn't add up there best to call them as often the retailer stuff up the meter type - I had the reverse happen, despite making considerable effort to get a Smart meter installed my seller believed I still only had an older one and so had me on the wrong plan and was still sending Meter Readers out despite my not needing them.

  • Are you being charged different TOU rates at the moment? Or are you looking to sign up to a TOU plan? If so, this might trigger a meter replacement.
I have seen (pre smart meter) installations where there are 2 meters and a clock. There is prob a switch that "routes" the power through each meter depending on time of day and the meter reader will take readings from both meters.

Edit: I might have recalled incorrectly. I think it was for off peak water heating but pretty sure it was on an analog meter.

    • The second meter on a timer is for the Off Peak "J tariff". The hot water service power circuit would be the only circuit that runs through that meter.

What meter model do you have? Got a photo?

Unless it is a rotary one, it might be a smart meter

  • +1

There are accumulation, interval and smart meters.

An interval meter can record time of use. But it isn’t smart in the sense that they need to send a meter reader to read it.

Suspect you have an interval meter. Send a photo to confirm.

  • Probably the same way that EA can cancel your (high FIT) rate from current supplier and start charging you their new rates as from the LAST meter read! Not wait till the next reading in 1 month.
In my case, over 2 months lost since last reading.

  • The definition of a smart meter seems to have drifted up over the years. Originally anything smarter than the old rotating disk meters were considered smart meters, and they could do TOU. If they had an LCD display they were smart. Now it seems to require more smarts to be called smart.
