As far as I know, credit card insurance only covers international rental car insurance.
For interstate rental cars, how are we able to reduce the excess? Just by buying local travel insurance?

I've got commbank platinum rewards and it only covers international for $400 a year lol
Doesn't really seem Platinum then for $400, does it?
You're 100% right there.
You've chosen the wrong bank. My NAB and ANZ credit cards both have domestic car rental insurance.
Westpac (among other credit card comp insurances) applies a $300 policy excess which is not so great.
depends on the CC for car hire insurance excess.
i use SCTI for car hire excess reduction.
Third party excess insurance a few bucks a day
Like $100 for 2 days when the car hire is $180 for 2 days. or a return taxi would be only $160 in total so lol the economics aren't really stacking up.
$15 a day for NSW I got a quote from any random google result link. Can be cheaper if you look around.
Separate travel insurance.
Sadly the price leader, Rentalcarprotection.com.au has exited the market. I'm using Rentalcover.com (with SAVE30 code) for a 3-day trip next month and sometimes use domestic travel insurance (SCTI, Zoom: zero policy excess) for longer trips.
Rentalcover.com looked cheap (and thanks for the code)… but their T&Cs (semi hidden) said that you had to have purchased a base level insurance package in order to be covered under their "Full Protection"! Not cool, and also not worthwhile imho when the two are added together.
I think that's referring to places like the USA, where cars can be rented without CDW/LDW as their domestic travellers typically have cover through credit cards. CDW is included when you rental a car in Australia/
I used these guys, https://www.carhireexcess.com.au/ had a hit and run, and these guys pay me out during the COVID era.
+1 for these guys. Been using them for a few years. Made a claim with them last year and paid out the excess. Highly recommended.
I used to use Baaaney but found with excesses often $5K and above there are lower prices available elsewhere.
My credit card insurance covers domestic car rental. (Westpac)
