Nvidia Shield, Split Audio/Video out?

Not sure if this is doable or not.

So we currently have a Panasonic Plasma TV 1080P and use the Shield for our content. We have it connected through our Yamaha Receiver via HDMI and everything works fine. One day we will have to replace the plasma I guess and buy a 4K oled of some description. The problem is that our receiver, while top of the game when it was current only had HDMI 1.3 (Yamaha RX-V3800) but 4K wasn't supported until HDMI 1.4 I think?

So is there way to split the output from the shield so that video would go to a new TV but audio went through the receiver as normal? Or would I have to replace the receiver as well? Or just run everything as is and trust the TV's upscaler to sort it out?

Cheers

    You could buy a HDMI/audio splitter. Would need one that can support 4k. Might not be worth it vs buying a cheap/second hand 4k receiver

    Or you might be able to use audio out on your TV. Not too sure what audio outputs are standard on newer TVs these days, I feel most will just have HDMI ARC and forgoing the practically obsolete optical/analogue options. And I believe for ARC you need HDMI 1.4

    Replace the receiver. Sell it on marketplace to recoup some of the money.

    You'll run into other issues in time with audio not syncing, audio codecs not working and CEC/source selection shenanigans.

    Just put an alert for AVR here and wait for a good deal.

    • This!, I had the same issue with the old Yamaha Receiver, and then I updated the receiver! Problem solved.
      and then I upgraded the Panasonic Plasma TV 1080P too
      haha

    I was in same situation, I got a box same brand as this one (mine was single output, 4k@60 with ARC, looks like that model isn't for sale anymore) - feed the optical to my SR8002 and it works fine

    Just search on amazon for a hdmi extractor and try one and return if it doesn't work with your setup

  • Shield-> HDMI cable -> TV

    TV->Optical Out cable-> Receiver

    Change settings on TV to output audio by Optical (or dial down the TV volume)

    Downside being this would require turning on/off the Shield/TV and Receiver separately.

    • OK thanks, I have it all setup on the Harmony remote so might just be a matter of reprogramming that. Also the TV is 13 years old and doesn't have an audio out. As other have suggested I might keep an eye out for a receiver, there have been a couple of refurbs pop up from time to time.

      Thanks all.

      • Are you sure?
        My Panasonic Plasma had Optical Audio out for this exact purpose. Many, of not most TVs of that era did because HDMI receivers were newish and pricey.

        Nvidia site also says you can get a USB to Optical converter for the shield.
        so you could do
        HDMI to TV
        and USB Optical to receiver

          Oh cool, thanks I'll check it out.

          As for optical out, sorry for the confusion, If this does become an issue then I'll need to check the connections on the new TV that replaces the Panasonic. (And I did find the optical out on the Pana, it was hiding.)

          There are also HDMI splitters that parse out the audio to optical out.
