Stolen Car Key

Hey guys I just discovered the inside of my car searched through this morning. Unfortunately it looks like a forgot to lock my car last night. I had all my house keys and wallet credit card etc in the car at the time. Currently filling out a police report, cancelling cards etc

Its a new car bought from a dealership last year so it came with 2 intelligent keys with remote locking capabilities and 1 mechanical key. I recalI the mechanical key coming in one of the pockets with my car manual and service logbook. I can't seem to find it now so i suspect it was also stolen.

My question is, will I have to get both my intelligent keys replaced? or is there a cheaper way but still making the stolen mechanical key useless?

Thanks

Barrels changed, new key inserts for the smart keys (not the smart enclosure parts)

Sounds like you should be able to get away without replacing the smart keys themselves, with no need to pay for coding

Thanks thats what i was hoping but honestly not too sure

Assuming neither of the smart keys were stolen, what I said is accurate

        • If the mechanical key can start the ignition, won’t I need to also replace the ignition?

          • +1

@damolol: Yeah, you'll need to change the necessary barrels (likely the main barrel, and the one on the driver's door)

          • @damolol:

If the mechanical key can start the ignition, won’t I need to also replace the ignition?

No/possibly. Unless the mechanical key has a chip in the head of it. If it was just a metal key, it wont start. If it has a bulky plastic head, it may have a transponder in the head and that key will start the car.

Go see a dedicated automotive locksmith, tell them what happned, they can then rekey all your locks, recut all your keys to the new code, program out the "spare" key if it did have a chip in it, and program a new spare key if you need it.

Then ring a regular residential locksmith to come out and rekey your house if they got your house keys as well..

Why is OP asking us when they can ask the dealer or any locksmith for the correct answer?

      • Um, well isn't that obvious?

… everyone already has Ozbargain open?

  • Your house keys got stolen as well?

I assume the incident didn’t happen at your house and the car was parked somewhere else.

    • Car was parked in the driveway. We were sleeping when it happened

      • Your partner opened the front door for you, or it was left unlocked?

      • Sleeping on the job again?

Take a breath before you lodge the report… there's a fine for leaving your car unlocked.

    • Crap, i just lodged the report.. Is it an offence in Victoria to leave it unlocked on private proeprty though?

      • +1

Sorry to hear that. Next step: consult an independent automotive locksmith to work out your cheapest option. Of course your dealer/manufacturer can help but at significantly higher cost. I'd go for just one new remote/key. I've bought many pre-owned cars that only come with one key. If you want to replace everything you may need to make an insurance claim.

"I forgot to mention the broken window…!"

        😂

        • +3

Yes why go a small fine, when you can score a fraud charge or perjury

    • +7

In Victoria, NSW and Queensland, it is illegal to leave your car unlocked or with windows open if you move more than 3m away from it. A window is deemed “secure”, however, if it is open by less than 2cm. Victorians can be hit with a $117 on-the-spot fine, while in NSW you will get stuck with a $114 penalty.

…i was thinking 'wtf are you talking about?'
this is just absurd……you can be fined for walking more than 3m from your car if its unlocked??? wtaf????

Apparently it’s to deter people creating opportunity’s for car thefts. It’s common for people to warm the car up in the morning and then go back into the house. My neighbour had his car stolen like this.

        • +1

          Rough part of Melbourne?

        • +4

          Your neighbour is an idiot

        • +2

Who warms up a car before driving it? It's better to just drive the thing.

          • +2

@JIMB0: not with frost/fogged up windows - thats another fine?

            • +1

@Dslrfirst: Not a problem if you park in the garage. Otherwise the air con works rather quickly to defog the windows and a bucket of water gets rid of the frost.

      • If government smells a way to steal more money from you then they will. We're going to steal money from you for leaving your window down a smidge in case someone notices and steals from you. Govlogic at it's finest.

Do you see cops testing if doors are unlocked all the time?

          • @Ughhh: Who me?

            How would I know?

Maybe we need a poll. Do they skulk around looking for slightly ajar windows?

            • +2

@EightImmortals: Just wondering why cops aren't trying to open car doors all the time for easy money.

          • @Ughhh: They do that occasionally. Not hugely frequently, but I've heard of it in qld.
I get it, its a safety thing to help prevent thefts, but it feels like a bit of a cop out to fine people for that.

            • @bhubb18: You don't want people to make it a habit though, then expect police resources to solve their issue when it could have been easily avoided.

      • you can be fined

Now if it worries you see if the plod or govt can supply data of how many have been fined. My guess less a handful, unless it was at a protest of some sort that was irritating govt of big business.

just a question, but why did you leave everything in the car? house keys and wallet credit card

i have left my phone in the car before and i rushed back out to get it. also i always keep car locked just wondering how you never thought about it or wondered why all of that was missing?

  • +3

How did you get into the house if your house keys were in the car?

    • +1

i want to know this too op and my questions above @damolol

      • I don’t normally leave all of it in the car. Just bad timing..

        • -1

i want to know how it happened what was in your mind and why you didnt think of all that stuff being missing?

    • +1

They probably leave their house doors unlocked too.

    • -3

In Melbourne of all cities, the gangland crime capital of Australia…

    • Could have a keypad to get in the house, we haven't had to carry a house key for 7+ years.

    • We have a smart lock installed so we enter the house using a code. No keys needed.

  • +7

Don’t wanna victim blame but this is why premiums keep going up. Secure your property ffs

      • +13

They charge because people make claims.

    • "Don't want to victim blame"

      proceeds to blame victim

    • -1

This usually doesn't affect premiums as it is one of those cases insurers love as they can reject the claim for violating the policy that you must secure your vehicle.

  • Audi?

I lost one of my smart keys and had to get a new one made. I forgot to bring the manual emergency key with me and it wouldn't work anymore after I got the new key coded because they have to delete all the old keys from the car.

I brought it back to them and had it coded back in. Any locksmith should be able to delete it for you, just that the key will still unlock your car manually through the key hole but won't be able to start it.

  • +3

Funny how many people leave their spare keys inside the car, it’ll come in really handy when you’re locked out and lost your main key.

  • No sympathy, would not be surprised if this post is pure BS.

    • +1

why do you think its BS? just wondering. what they get out of this

      • +1

        I'll wait for the updates

  • +2

So not only do they have a key to your car but they have your house keys as well? I hope you're not going anywhere in the immediate future until you can get your locks changed in your home.

I dont know… there is an automotive expert locksmith on OzBargain… Learned all they know from watching Scotty Kilmer videos… Maybe they can chime in with an answer?

    • +1

I learnt how to change my blinker fluid from Scotty.

      • +1

Lies! Only an authorised dealer can change blinker fluid.
