Easynews Unlimited Plan (Includes Privado VPN) - US$2.99 Per Month (~A$4.63)

590

This is about as cheap as you can get Unlimited Internet. Privado is an okay VPN provider that lots of Usenet providers use, fine for browsing or torrenting but not so great for circumventiong geo-blocking or getting regional pricing deal (likely to be blocked).

One thing that sets Easynews apart is that, in addition to NNTP Usenet (ie requiring a special client), they also have a Web based front end with searching enable (including inside archives), so, for instance, you can track down a copy of a particular music single in flac format). The web interface is here: https://members.easynews.com/global5/

I have been using an Easynews $3 USD a month plan for the last 3 years and would recommend them, unless you want to do a lot of posting (they sin bin you if you get DMCAed). Also note that historically Usenet providers offer discounted pricing around Black Freitag / Cyber Monday.

I've been a long-time subscriber to Easynews and I highly recommend them. The Easynews search link above is for what they refer to as their 'vintage' search page. This one has a more modern interface https://members.easynews.com/2.0/

    • +2

I was about to reply the same. +1 thanks mate

    • +2

Does the search interface have api functionality for sonarr radarr etc ?

      • -1

sonarr and radarr work with easynews, yes. set up sabnzbd with easynews, then link up sonarr/radarr with your sabnzbd.

        • +4

          That’s not what they asked.

To answer the question; no the API won’t work with the *arrs.

    • +2

Likewise!!! Although I didn’t know they had their own index/search will check it out.
I have a few pre-paid blocks with other providers to fill the gaps, but these guys have been excellent.
Speeds are super fast. VPN is slow, but free. They also provide socks proxies. For newsgroups though, never bother with vpn or proxies there is no need they just slow you down. Free VPN comes in handy has a good app for iOS and Android plus they also provide open vpn profiles.

    • I am on newshosting, also on their 2.99 deal from a few years ago, is easy news a good compliment or is there one on a different backbone i should look out for?

  • +1

This $2.99 price is available all the time from what i can tell. Just need to find a link. People post links on reddit all the time. Its good as a back up for real debrid.

  • +7

    Backbone:
    Omicron (US / AMS)
    Takedown Policy:
    DMCA

    https://whatsmyuse.net/

You’re definitely going to need backup providers to handle takedowns.

    • +1

What does this mean? When I DL from easynews it works fine.
Do “backup” providers ensure you have more results?

      • +1

        Basically yes, and more completions.

      • +2

this is only relevant if you're getting older stuff. dunno about others, but i've always thought usenet is primarily for sonarr/radarr and getting on-going stuff. it's great for older stuff too, as long as the stuff is quite mainstream. obscure content needs to be found on invite-only trackers and forums.

    • That website is awesome - thanks :)

    • +1

Can anyone recommend a better provider that doesn't do DMCA takedowns? I tried usenet a few years ago and could never find any of the rarer things I searched for, and the common ones are available on the high seas anyway.

      • Usenet has never been great for rare stuff.

        • +1

yup. private trackers are the way to get rare stuff, not usenet.

        • never been great for rare stuff.

Was great for that in the 2000s when there were basically no DMCAs because no one spoke about Usenet.

        • Oh I was surprised today

    • They are my primary still using pre-paid blocks that are 5+ years only. Yes you need a backup provider but normally it’s just a few blocks missing.
I think my backup is Astraweb and can’t recall the other.

  • What do you mean by “additional client”?
I use web interface and click on link to download via my browser.
Is there a better/faster way to maximise speed of the download?

    • +1

vast majority of linux distros posted nowadays are encrypted and obfuscated. you need to get access to indexers like ninjalsentral/drunkenslug/althub/nzbgeek/nzbplanet (and animetosho for anime) to unlock usenet's full potential.

further, the main selling point of usenet is the automation possible. check out the usenet subreddit, and be on the lookout for programs like sabnzbd/sonarr/radarr.

      • +1

Exactly, Plex, Overseer, Sonarr, Radarr and Nzbget work well together.
Someone adds a show/movie to their Plex watchlist and a short time later it’s there to watch.
Readarr, calibre-web, and calibre paired together are great for books, although IRC with lazy librarian also works well.

      • It's also encrypted if u use the SSL ports for usenet

You don't really need a VPN,as the SSL layer so ur ISP can see u downloaded 1gb file same time HBO news show droped, just not what you downloaded…

Saves hassling about having to roll a VPN or socks for torrent clients

  • Already have Newshosting from a previous deal, which is similar to Easynews I assume.

  • +7

    Should this read unlimited Usenet?

  • Can this be linked with stremio just like RD?

    • Just answering my own question. Looks like there's a 3rd party addon. More info on the stremio add-ons subreddit

      • Here to ask the same question, I can't see how this is a replacement for my internet connection?

        • +1

Jackson this is more like a replacement for streaming services. But instead of needing multiple streaming services to access most content, you can have access all from the one place. Convenience and cost winner.

          • @Ronnnie: Yeah I think the OPs post just had some confusing wording, referring to this:

This is about as cheap as you can get Unlimited Internet.

            all explained very well below

      • The stremio add on hasn't been very reliable in my experience. Better using EN with a kodi add on like Fen.

  • +3

I found this ThunderNews Black Friday post still has active links as well.

I bought the 500GB / $3 block to test. They claim 4,000+ days retention, which should add to my 2,600 / 3,000 from Frugal, I've put in a lower priority.

    • $3 deal looks good. They ask for a lot of information on sign up.

        Sonarr for Television

        Radarr for Movies

        SABnzb for usenet downloading

SABnzb is the main downloader, with the other two connecting via API key to send/recieve commands regarding movies/show downloads.

You add your usenet account credentials in the SABnzb settings, along with a seperate indexer which is the search engine.

I use []NZBGeek](https://nzbgeek.info/register.php) mostly, I believe they offer a free trial, then I pay them US$6.00 for 6 months, between my usenet which is US$4.00 & the indexer, the cost is US$5.00 per month. The Original deal up top would come to only US$4.00 per month.

As for setting it up, the best way to understand how it works is to install each of the apps and read through each of the settings one by one. I would start with SABnzb first. Here is a video guide with more details. There is a large number of "ARR" forks for other types of media and applications to consume with, r/SelfHosted is where to go for more information.

If you wanted to save money, there are ways to setup these with torrenting, but they require more programs that add another layer of complexity, plus torrenting anything that is not recently released usually is a waste of time compared to the longevity of many usenet backends.

An NZB file is very much like a torrent file, which tells the program what the actual download is and matches it, the difference is you are getting it from a cloud-like host in larger blocks, at usually full internet speed. The nature of DDL is generally more private as well.

        • Thanks for the detailed guide. I will start off with nzbgeek. Does the free trial have any restrictions on the content? ( I presume it will only be restrictions on the number of downloads per day..)
I am a member of a few private trackers, so checking if there's true value add in going the Usenet route.

          • +1

@thegamerulez: Usenet backends are normally 10GB/7days & indexers would have either a low daily limit for the week or a total of maybe 10 NZB file downloads as well as searches.

It's normally very small to just test that it's working and at full speed.

            • @Jimbuscus: thanks @Jimbuscus. One last question - can I use a seedbox as a remote storage location for usenet? I try to keep my "data" in a remote storage so that I can link it to Plex and access it from anywhere. I can also merge my torrent and usenet downloads in a singular location.

              • @thegamerulez: Only if you can install the applications on the seedbox, all these apps have docker containers. I would strongly recommend only using the usenet credentials on a single IP address to avoid issues regarding being treated as a shared account.

    • +1

Been using them for 5+ years. Can’t complain.

    • Is the 500GB block indefinite? Ah shit

      • In the Reddit thread they said yes.

        • Just paid AUD $50 ish for this / didn’t realise it billed annually and just needed a few files…rip

  • Also note that historically Usenet providers offer discounted pricing around Black Freitag / Cyber Monday.

and the Dutch King's Day (April 27th)

  • I just got emails for Eweka at €3,99 per month and Newshosting USD$3.69 per month. Both also include privado and unlimited usenet.

    • +2

I have been on eweka yearly plan $59 for 4 years now. I have usenet.farm and vipernews as backup and never had to use them for my linux distros. Highly recommend.

      • This is the way. Have the same 3 providers covering all bases.

      • $59 AUD for eweka? That sounds pretty good. I am on the $20 USD newshosting plan but find I need Eweka occasionally. Now I just do an eweka trial occasionally when I run into something I really want that has been DMCAed.

  • Telegram is free.

    • +2

Telegram is fine for one-off downloads where you don't need it too quickly and in a location for a server to find.

Usenet is a component of automated programs that download what you want, when it's available, at the quality/sources you want it from. You get the episode/movie automatically when it's available on your Plex/Jellyfin.

Usenet normally downloads very fast as well, an entire season of a show downloaded, renamed and transferred in minutes, an entire series in 10 minutes.

This also becomes more beneficial with higher qualities like 4K Remux, uncompressed Blu-ray movies for you 70" TV etc.

    • +2

And? They’re not related in terms of functionality.

      https://techjury.net/blog/what-is-usenet/

Usenet predates the world wide web. Although it was originally for text-based discussions, the main use case people here are discussing is downloading files of varying types.

      • telegram has quite a bit of piracy too haha.

        • +1

I genuinely did not know that! I stand corrected.

  • What is this? Unlimited broadband NBN for residential homes?

    • +4

No, a way to get access to a digital ‘all you can eat buffet’ for certain types of files.

    • +4

      3 words: alternative to torrenting
except you don't have to seed anything, coz it isn't P2P.

check the usenet subreddit for more details i guess. but yeah, in essence, allows you to get media files (which you obviously already own a physical copy of, but need to download for backup purposes). also allows automation for on-going stuff, so your computer will automagically download dem linux distros as soon as they are released.

      • But most movies apps allow you to download movies anyway so do you need bit torrent or vpn?

      • -1

So do you still need to pay for an internet connection to make use of this torrenting?

        • 1) yes
          2) it’s not torrenting

      • +1

        3 words: alternative to torrenting

        Or 2 words: torrenting alternative.

But torrenting is still good if you use a seedbox.

  • Been using easynews since 1995 and i didnt even know it came with vpn. Is it better than nord?

  • I'm fairly new to usenet and I'm currently using Frugal, is it worth getting easynews as a backup or do they both use the same backbone?

    • My link in the comment above lets you check.

      • Thanks, looks like Frugal and easynews both use Omicron

The web interface is awesome for looking at thumbnails when deciding which… umm documentaries to download. Great timing.. my $4.95 plan is up for renewal… and I thought THAT was a good deal.

    • +1

you haven't scratched the surface of usenet if you're stuck using the web interface. check subreddit for invites to usenet indexers such as drunkenslug, ninjacentral and nzbgeek.

  • +4

It starts off saying $2.99 USD/mo and then when you select the plan then suddenly it's asking you to pay yearly at $35.88 USD billed annually. That's where they get you. So there's no way to pay for just a month or a few months. Got to bulk buy. So remember to have the money for the full 12 months available in your bank account or else you get nothing. That's about $56 AUD in today's currency conversion rate. So it's more like about $4.70 AUD per month but billed annually. You pay a full 12 months worth up front to get this deal.

    • +1

this got me, i failed to notice that. so i paid for 12months. dang it!

  • +1

    This vs torrent?

    • +3

I thought torrent sucked. Basically when it comes to some older stuff there's hardly any one seeding. And also the slow download speeds a lot of the time with older stuff because of the relatively few seeds. With usenet i always get full speed.

      • +1

you must be using public trackers. older stuff and obscure stuff will only be seeded long term on private trackers such as PTP and BTN.

but I do agree, usenet tends to be better for most mainstream stuff.

    • this for on-going stuff and most mainstream stuff and anime.

private trackers for obscure/niche content, but may not always be easy to gain access to such trackers.

  • This vs real debrid?

    • +1

      Real debrid is better

      • +1

        Different. Not better.

  • Was a long time user for about a decade or so, was great. But the high seas and a VPN cover most of my basic needs these days. Good to see they are still alive and kicking.

    • how risky to exclude vpn from this equation ?

    Man, we've gone full circle.
Back at usenet again. I feel old.

    • +1

Usenet never went away or became unpopular.

  • Some very interesting reading and learning on this post from all the experience. Wanted to take a peek into this shtuff, any good quality starter guidance?

    • +1

Check Reddit. There are some excellent guides there.

  • +2

    Usenet hasn’t been the same since n z b s dot org

    • Yep, the OG for me.

  • +5

Sounds selfish perhaps, but the first rule of Usenet is that you don't talk about Usenet.

    • -1

Usenet is complicated enough that we don't have to worry about it being mainstream enough for companies to care.

That being said, I thoroughly hope we don't get a simple all in one app like LimeWire/Sharebear.

  • Is it normal to only expect speeds of 500kb/s when on a 1gb connection? I should be getting at least 5mb/s

    • +2

No that is not normal. Check your news provider FAQ and contact their support team.
