Hi all, I am currently looking for a rental which is hopefully not too far from Randwick as my daughter is needing ongoing treatment at the Sydney children's hospital. I am new to the area and have had no luck so far in narrowing my search or finding a rental that is affordable at the moment. We were staying at the Ronald McDonald House charities but unfortunately it is no longer an option for us anymore.
Any suggestions will be really appreciated
Please Recommend a Suburb Which Is a Short Commute to Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick

Sorry to hear about your daughter’s health :-(
What is your budget roughly? And how far/long do you want to travel to get there? The difficulty is all the areas around that way, including those on the inner south, inner west way are on the expensive side and very challenging to get a place because of high demand
Thanks our budget is around $650-700 the most and was hoping a commute of 30 minute or less only because we had situations where we had to rush on few occasions to the hospital due to her being unwell
Eastlakes, Hillsdale, etc has a history of housing commissions so tend to have a lot of cheap older blocks. About 15 minutes drive.
Hi,
Have a look at: https://www.schn.health.nsw.gov.au/hospitals/sch/inpatients/…
then Select "Other accommodation options"
Also look at "Regional families" if applicable.

Thanks we will be claiming some of the expenses through iptaas. The social worker is involved thankfully . All the short term accommodations around randwick are booked out unfortunately but will keep looking for now
I would see if the hospital or charity has any tips, they sometimes have leads on accommodation programmes or something as simple as landlords who are helpful.
If you are stuck in the private market, consider Marrickville. Some older and more affordable (for Sydney inner west) units there, or maybe a bit further east around Mascot. All the suburbs in the area are safe, so it is viable just to look on the map on realestate.com.au
Can’t do much about the dire Sydney rental market, unfortunately. Thanks for your recommendation. We were staying at one of the charity accommodations within the hospital premises but my daughter is now diagnosed with an ESBL infection and they don't have any isolation rooms available at the moment to accommodation us and we have to move out because of the same. All of this happened in a matter of few days . We have been constantly checking on the real estate pages hoping something would show up
A lot of REA's don't even list their rentals. Physically go in to them, explain your needs and get put on their lists and they should contact you when a suitable place becomes available
This is certainlyu worth a try
Another Children hospital is in Westmead in Sydney West. Perhaps your daughter can be treated there instead, rental should be more affordable there than City
Thanks. The team at Randwick has been great so far and we would like to continue here for now. We requested to be transferred to here as things were not so great at John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle
Ok. I see rental in Maroubra for as low as $350/week. probably a room on your own, house share with students. They only ask for 1 but maybe they can accommodate for 2. Other rents is as high as $900/wk.
Kingsford, Kensington, Maroubra, Roseberry, Eastlake, Matraville, Mascot, Sydney CBD (find anything close to the tram line to Randwick from CBD).
Thanks
I hope your daughter responds well to treatment. Does she have CF?
Thanks. CF meaning cystic fibrosis no. It is rhabdomyosarcoma
Just reading up on rhabdomyosarcoma… Wish you all the best.
Tough gig. Stay strong.
Sorry to hear that OP.
More available and affordable if you look further south, away from the beaches and the University. Along the trunk bus routes on Anzac Parade and Bunnerong Road, which have direct bus connections to the Hospital and UNSW. Suburbs like Daceyville, Pagewood, Maroubra, Matraville and Eastlakes.
Newtown Neigbourhood Centre has an accoommadation department, producing a list of affordable places, also their staff have been doing this for a very long time. perhaps you could speak to them also. I will look up and link the latest list.

You don't say what size accommodation you need or the mode of commute but immediately around that area is hellishly expensive.
Try a bit further south and southwest.
Botany, Matraville, Eastlakes, Roseberry, Pagewood, Chifley. All the best to your little one.
Thanks. A studio or a one bedroom apartment would be more than enough if they let us as there is four of us including the two little ones. We do have a car to take us for the appointments and admissions to the hospital but other than that we would mostly be relying on home deliveries for groceries and stuff
