New Car Suggestions

Ok so my rego is due to expire on a 2012 Toyota Yaris towards the end of September. I have 32k from an inheritance so far that was sitting on for a while now.
edit: but also want to buy a house however i'm in Sydney and worried about the house prices.

The Yaris is still not a bad car but definitely outgrown it and I would probably prefer to be in say small medium SUV but concerned about the wait times and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on the wait times in this category. I don't have children personally but open to a family in the future and have used my Yaris with a full contingent of people which was rather uncomfortable.

Kia Seltos my be just right but Kia Stonic/hyundai venue too small? We still have a Hyundai IX35 at home but the Kona seems tiny compared to it Volkswagen T cross also looks big enough. Don't trust Haval/Chery/MG but feel free to change my mind.

Wondering where to go from here factoring in the car delivery times?

edit: can I also add won't use all the inheritance on the car, need to think about a house deposit, also okay if I have part of the car on a loan.

petrol cars wait times aren't too bad. Friend bought a Mazda couple of months ago and got it within 3 weeks

    • -1

Mazda are expensive so not as much demand there.

  • +31

I love how you have tied your family member dying to the registration of your car lol

    • +17

Pretty inconsiderate of them to die so close to rego renewal time really.

    • +5

Sorry I didn't want to frame it like that any inheritance is going towards a car and future house. This inheritance has only been sitting there for months.

      • +67

Keep your current car until you've got the house sorted.

        • +15

Car loan will screw up your borrowing capacity.

  • +51

    How have you outgrown it?

If there's nothing wrong with the car, keep using it..

    • +10

Too many KFC deals, I assume.

    • age and perhaps plans for starting a family or so.

    • +1

Yeah, probably has that money burning a hole in his pocket.
Though i'd say hybrids these days might be something worth upgrading for.

But i'm really not sure on the tech. Like how it uses petrol vs electric, for short vs long trips. What if it is a long trip with no charging station available? Is it still driveable? Does it go through a lot of petrol then….?

      It's JUST $30k.
And it sounds like he might not usually have that money lying around, and thus might not be easily able to get $30k saved again. Either way, he should probably save it for a house deposit.

      • +1

I've got an EV with like 350km range. Range anxiety is real and I used to run my petrol car to red-light levels of empty.

The cheapest practical EV (MG4) is $40k. The charging infrastructure for non-Teslas isn't there yet, maybe in 5-10 years. There are fast chargers but not enough resulting in long queues during peak travel times. If it's just for commuting to work, I think they're fantastic, just need to plug it into the wall charger overnight for a healthy amount of range once or twice a week. Range efficiency is opposite to petrol cars as highway/freeway driving is less efficient.

Hybrids can be great. I had a subaru xv but range and performance weren't great. My colleagues rate the toyotas and say the new RAV4s can get 700km on a tank at around 7L/100km.

  • +5

    Sorry for your loss.

    KIA Seltos 6 months wait.

  • +1

    Yaris Cross Hybrid

    • If he feels he must spend the moeny, this.
Bigger car, newer tech. An upgrade.

  • +41

I don't have children personally but my friends and their kids probably drive with me sometimes

I wouldn't buy a SUV just 'cause they sometimes use your car. They can suck it up; it's not their car.

    • +13

Yeah….SUV just costs so much but for what?

Often has less or comparable storage space to sedan/hatch with a huge drag coefficient, harder to park, bigger wheels/higher running cost

  • +2

If you want to find out wait times you need to contact dealers. If you want a new car and don’t know what model go to a few of your preferred brands dealers and test them out. It takes time, but it’s worth it because we could recommend something you just don’t Ike the look of or have an irrational objection to a brand. There is no substitute for being able to sit in them and see them for real.

Start with internet searching to narrow down your list if you are time poor.

I recently went through the process. Chose a shortlist, went and sat in them and ruled out 2. Drove one and ruled that out and it left me with a choice of 3 which was much more reasonable to narrow down by availability.

  • +9

Couple of things, do you need a brand new car? If not maybe have a look at demos, Skoda Kamiq is also great option (with warranty ofc). But in saying all that do you really need a small SUV. Why not look at a used larger hatch like a similar gen corolla or a wagon even?

    • +1

Demos is what I'm happy to work with. Corolla size is fine also but the price point of Toyota is so high now I can probably get a bigger SUV in another make than brand new hatch from Toyota.

      • +10

But then you're stuck with something that isn't a Toyota

      • Price is high because historically Toyota is number 1# in reliability. Things can change though. But i've heard if the cars manufactured in Japan, you're on the right path.
Which a quick google suggests is: Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Isuzu.

I think they say If not Toyota, Honda. The rest i couldn't rank as i don't know a lot.

  • +24

    Invest the windfall.

You don't buy a depreciating asset

    • +9

This is the same as what I was thinking…

      Family member dies
      get inheritance
blow it all on depreciating asset

      • +4

Seems the be the case with lots of people anytime they get some cash. Need to blow it now

      • +1

Not here wanting to waste money however the Yaris has 210,000km on it already. will need something bigger eventually size wise but i'm open to buying a recent car doesn't have to be brand new just something that will last.

Also want to own a home but I live in Sydney and at the moment it looks likely I will have to go the mortgage alone

        • +18

You can probably get at least 400,000km out of it.

        • +6

If you need to upgrade car I would consider the size of a Toyota Corolla, but go for a cheaper brand that is from Korea or similar.

        • +3

My Camry is up to 380k and going strong. Note that I do have a house though, it was important to me to get that than upgrade to heated seats.

      • +1

Reminds me of the ol' people who play the lottery end up blowing it, because in playing the lottery, they're bad with money in the first place.
Though that next $20mil+ division draw? I'm going to win that. That'll be me. For sure.

    • 100%. New car is a bad choice here imo. $10k on second hand car at most.

      • Reminds me, apparently cars are hugely over priced lately due to lack of availability, dealer markups, war in Ukraine so parts manufacturing is nil there (so down 1/3)

    • +1

You lease depreciating liabilities and purchase appreciating assets.

  • +1

but my friends and their kids probably drive with me sometimes.

Why can't they drive their own car?

    • +3

Why would they when OP can offer theirs 😂

      • +3

and buy one big enough to fit other people's families

        • OP probably uses Uber to charge them.

    • +5

I agree. Get a smaller car so they can't come with you.

    • They're low key probably justifying to themselves wanting a new car but….
shiit happens, sometimes you drive other people around.

Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts.

    • I second this option, I mean can you name another truck with four wheel drive,
smells like a steak and seats thirty-five?

    • +1

You all started singing the song in your head around at least "65 tons of American pride" didn't you? 🤣

  • +4

Put the 32k into an investment

  • +6

No FBT on electrics/hybrid novated leases make them way too good to pass up right now. You may not like Chinese cars but it's really worth a test drive, because they're a relative bargain.

I'm paying ~$8k a year with a $14k balloon payment on an Atto 3 for 5 years. Includes rego, charging, maintenance, tyres, insurance, etc.

As others have mentioned though, buy a house/invest first. A car isn't a sensible economic purchase.

    • So you’re paying $54k over 5 years for a $48k car including rego, tyres and EV “maintenance”? Seems pretty decent.

I heard some leasing mobs are taking the opportunity to gouge on price so you’d need to be careful and do the sums.

      • +1

I'm an accountant, so there were spreadsheets galore done. The lease company claims I'm saving $36k with this, but really I'm probably looking at probably $10-15k over the 5 years. I also got in before June 30 for the vic govt $3k cashback (which more than paid for the charger at home).

I'm definitely getting gouged, it's 9% interest on the loan and $360 a year "account management" fee. However my employer has an exclusive agreement so I had no choice.

    • Yeah. If OP can't relatively easily save over 5 years to have $45k in the bank, or has it already because he's smart with his money, then he should like keep it in trust for a deposit or a rainy day.
Though….if the cars 20 years old, there's something to be said for reliable transport. Though it's a toyota, that yaris likely has a lot of life left in it, apart from possible some pricey pricey repairs/replacements at some stage.
Though i get the appeal of a new car. If they must get one.
They are much better of getting a 'new to them' car that's also known to be extremely reliable, maybe a few years old.
But….the most reliable car is probably the one they have now.

  • +3

    buy a 6000 SUX

    • +1

      0 electrics, 3.5mpg (29L per 100km).

      This is the way.

      • +1

I'd buy that for a dollar

  • +2

    Suzuki fronx?

27-30k for hybrid cross over that's about the same size as a Mazda cx30, releases in a month or so. So barely a wait if you registered your interest now at a dealer

  • +5

Buy a Corolla, don't buy a SUV just because your friends may use it sometimes

  • +11

Keep the current car and invest 32k.

No way I am paying 32k for other peoples children to drive with me. Ok maybe only if I am Michael Jackson I will.

  • +2

    Why not EV?

  • +3

Considering you still have an ix35, the yaris sounds like your second car?

No kids + you've survived with a yaris = I reckon you should get a corolla-sized hatch, just for a bit more room and power.

Transporting your friends and kids is not a logical reason to buy a bigger vehicle with (and I'm generalising here) higher ongoing costs.

In addition to the safety features, do some research into fuel consumption, servicing and insurance costs before you put any money down on a car. The purchase cost is just the gateway to ongoing expense.

    • sorry to clarify. It's mums IX 35. The option is always there just to buy that off her as it has 70,000km around 2014 ish model. - She is retired and can buy another car if she wants.

Transporting friends is more of a social thing and because I know the roads around Sydney doesn't happen often. 90% off my driving is done commuting to work and to the supermarket gym etc

      • +1

Transporting friends is more of a social thing

You can do that in a Corolla or equivalent. I've been doing that for 17 years. None of my passengers have complained about the space.

      • +9

Why not do a swap. Give mum the Yaris, get the IX. Adjust for $ as necessary.

        • +2

Personally I'd want my parents to enjoy nicer, better and more comfortable things in their old age.

          • +1

@ass3ts: It’s still not really that old. It’s still a Toyota. Exactly how much more comfortable is a newer car? Sure it’s a bit subjective and clouded by ‘new car’, but aside from some of the modern safety tech there hasn’t been a lot of change in cars in a decade. All got AC, suspension technology hasn’t increased significantly, seats are pretty much the same etc.

If mum doesn’t want an older car, trade the Yaris for something she does want.

            • @Euphemistic: It's a car with 210,000km, Toyota or not, 2/3 the distance to the Moon.

          • @ass3ts: We do. But you often stop caring as you get older about the new and the shiny. Given the low mileage it sounds like she might be old enough that she doesn't drive a lot anymore anyway. But it'd be between her and her kid.

  • +13

You'll never get the house if everytime you come into some money you blow it on crap.

  • Thanks all. I think you have put things into perspective.

I am in Sydney and working on around 70k PA salary (looking for a higher paid job as we speak with competitors) - inheritance was about 34 k so far but more to come by the end of September.

So I think I may be able to -buy a unit at least even if it means living as far as Gosford and commuting to work (parramatta) on those office days (remote half the week) and if I need a larger car consider buying something used or demo or partially working off finance.

ultimately the inheritance would go towards house and vehicle.

    • +10

Never put money into vehiculars or holidays. ALWAYS house first. Once you have 7 houses then vehicle. :)

    • +1

Just buy a house and keep your Yaris, it will probably live another 30 years with only standard maintenance.

    • You should invest or save your inheritance.

I'd suggest you talk to a mortgage broker to see what your borrowing capacity is. It's probably going to be difficult for you to buy a place on 70k income a year unless you've got more savings on top of your 32k inheritance? Aiming for as close to a 20% deposit would be ideal to avoid LMI.

Best to look for a place locally if you can. Driving from gosford to parramatta is a 140km return trip. Think about all the extra costs from fuel, service, repair and new car..

      • I would take the train mind you. Whilst I have an office job and recognise that roles are usually in and around Parramatta/City/Nth Sydney etc I'm not counting on the ability to work from home. It would be a pipe dream to be able to live regionally and work remotely.

        • From a quick google search, a train from Gosford to parramatta is approximately 1hr and 42mins one way. Just don't forget about work life balance!

Goodluck with whatever decision you decide to make :)

          • @kbargainz: It's 1hr 20-30m in peak, definitely longer than I'd like. About the same as driving but costs less and you can use the time productively (even use a toilet!). Also means avoiding the occasional M1 traffic jam nightmare.

    • +1

We managed with 2 kids in a Mazda 3 until our house was sorted. Even then bought a second hand.

    • +1

How much above retail are you asking?

        • +1

Can I neg you? I haven't negged yet

  • +3

    Lamborghini Huracan or Countach

    • +1

Why 2 Lamborginis from 2 completely different generations?

  • +4

A used 3 year old Kia Sportage with 50-80k kms can be had for less than 20k. IMO it would still be pretty newish and would be big step up from 2012 Yaris.

    • Are you sure, the cheapest one with the above conditions is https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2020-kia-sportage-s…, can easily knock 4k off the price?

      • There definitely were a few 2019-20 available around 20k in last couple of months when I was looking for one.

        • +1

I sold my Kia Sportage Si 2012 with 54000k on it for $15500. A few weeks later he sold for $18900

          Go figure

    • That is now what I am thinking just going down that path whilst also considering the options on the house.

    • Perhaps it is about tech, driving performance, comfort etc.

    • +1

its a low yield investment. homie needs to upgrade

  • +2

OP if you're trying to buy in Sydney, hang onto that inheritance and hang onto that car. You've got to think about stamp duty which is in addition to the deposit and can't be combined with it.

    • I live in Sydney and work there and family is there. TBH I'm not 100% concerned about where I buy, I spent my childhood in the country in Wagga Wagga so no problem with regional life but my job is based out of Sydney and can only work remotely part of the time.

  • Is it 32K or 320K?

    • +2

I was thinking that 32K on Sydney property is insignificant.
May not be even a incremental bid at an auction, sadly.

    • 32K. big family inheritance spilt between a number of people and I had just been sitting on it.

  • +1

If your company offers Novated Lease, do the math and see how it works out. Keeping my 2018 Kia Sportage turns out to be more expensive than driving a new Model Y (or Atto 3) over a 5 year period.
