55” OLED or 65” QLED/QNED - which to choose?

I’m looking for a TV on a budget and can afford either a 55” OLED sony or 65” QLED samsung.

It is for an apartment and I would be sitting 2-3m away. Would I regret not getting OLED? I don’t actually watch too much TV, honestly would use it mostly watching free to air TV in the background while doing something else and the occasional movie.

Nowadays TV isn't really necessary. I have 2 at home and only use them for youtube or spotify.
If you're still looking for 1 my suggestion would be 55" since you said the distance is 2-3m.

    • For general viewing bigger is not necessarily better and 55" is big enough even at 4m.
The 65" referenced also misses out on 120hz refresh.

If the TV will be in a brightly lit room (large windows, no blinds etc), get the Samsung. Dark room, OLED.

  • Depends on your personal preference. I got a 65" QLED-equivalent from Hisense three years ago (to replace a dead plasma). I know OLEDs have better colours and contrast but I'm also very happy with the Hisense and have no urge at all to upgrade.

  • QLED, doesn't matter for most people, especially with your given scenarios. No point spending more on the smaller OLED.

OLED is AMAZING for 4k HDR movies and TV series, you would ideally be able to limit the light in the room to really get the most out of it. If it's mostly free to air TV it may not matter much and the bigger screen may be preferred. I chose a none OLED awhile back so i could get a much bigger TV and different friends have mixed opinions. One said he would have definitely done what i did (he actually got a smaller OLED prior). I have since gotten a smaller OLED for a different room and it does look amazing for dark movies\tv shows so sometimes i actually watch things on it rather than the bigger tv. Although that is to other factors too.

So personal preference really, if you want the best of the best it's OLED. if your watching free to air tv maybe consider the bigger screen. Also you may want to factor in a sound bar.

I'd go for the 55” OLED, but each to their own.

    2-3m wtf

  • I think for a small place, 55" is best. OLED is so good it makes me annoyed at the picture quality at the cinema, but you'll occasionally notice that the picture looks a little dim. But in winter, or if you pull the blinds closed to watch something, the picture is genuinely incredible. It was a 4K HDR copy of the Fifth Element that did it for me—the opening scene the stars are these pinpricks of light on perfect black. God damn.

  • TL;DR: I had the same question and went for a 55" OLED for its absolute HDR capability in dark room.

Currently the term “QLED” is quite confusing. Assuming it refers to the one that utilises quantum dots (QD) to PRODUCE COLOURS, it’s actually just an enhanced version of LCD display instead of a brand new technology. This is in comparison to QD-OLED, which is in fact an advanced OLED panel with better colour performance by applying QD.

That means, in general, QLED is capable of a wider colour gamut than traditional LCD panels, especially when displaying content with higher brightness. Note the word “capable” here - manufacturers are also required to calibrate it well in order to truely highlight this advantage. That is, it is pointless to discuss colour without a reasonably accurate calibration. This is where the game starts, as manufacturers have different approach/abilities on this regard. I found rtings.com quite useful to see how each model performs.

Sony does the best in colour accuracy/calibration and one of the best in motion interpolation/frame rate upscale, IMO. However, another important aspect of a good display panel nowadays is HDR capability. QLED still relies on local dimming (LD), and however precise it is (given the same panel size, the more LD areas the better), it is by no means on par with an OLED panel when it comes to detailed brightness. Also, when displaying pure black areas, QLED would still have noticeable greyish look in dark environment whereas OLED is completely black with no light emitted at all, aka the true blackness.

Think of a scene displayed here: pure dark sky with bright yet tiny star lights, each accounting for way less than 1% of the total area of the display panel. On QLED, the best you can get is a greyish halo (might be very slight and small, but noticeable when watching in dark environment) surrounding each star; on OLED, the best you can get is very close to what you would see it in real life, that the only thing you would see are the stars, nothing else.

Any downside of OLED? Generally it’s the larger bright scenes. Most models with OLED, except for the absolute flagship ones, aren’t capable of keeping its peak brightness for long or when displaying scenes with large bright areas. This is important to consider should you place your TV in a well-lit room, say your living room with bright light during day time, and you watch it very often under such conditions.

In a word, if you enjoy HDR contents and would love to maximise your experience by watching them under dark environment, an OLED panel is the one to go with. Otherwise if you don’t care that much about HDR but would like the TV to be generally good and easy to watch under any light conditions, a QLED is the better choice.
