Cancellation Travel Insurance Doesn't Cover Cancellation by Airline, Neither Does Airline?

This was new to me, I have "unlimited" travel insurance cancellation coverage for cancellation not caused by me…..except it excludes if it's cancelled by the airline or mechanical failure. Turns out this is standard, and I've never realised this.

Jetstar cancelled flight at airport (at the gate) at night, lost accommodation at destination I'd prepaid for.

Jetstar didn't cover it, as their conditions of carriage don't stipulate they'll ever get you there (I was refunded by Jetstar).

Had travel insurance with cancellation coverage, but turns out they all don't seem to cover if the airline cancels the flight which is surely the most foreseeable and common form of cancellation possible???!

Even Jetstar recommended speaking with travel insurance.

Is this mis-selling cancellation coverage do you think? That it should have in massive capital letters, cancellation except the most common reason for cancellation?

Does everyone know this, or is it just me?

    Yep…

    It's a conspiracy between the airlines and the insurance companies…

    It only covers cancellations after you commence you trip.

  • Jetstar cancelled flight at airport (at the gate) at night,

    You're lucky, they cancelled our departure flight three times !!! last Xmas.

    • Same flight 3 times?

      • Same destination, 3 times cancelled over 2 days trying to depart.

        The flight we ended up departing with was also almost 4 hours delayed.

    I guess if it was covered, Jetstar would have sent all the insurance companies broke by now.

    Amex insurance definitely covers mechanical breakdown. It's in their ods which I've just seen:

    Your paid transport has been cancelled by your transport provider as
    a result of:
    a. riot, strike, civil commotion;
    b. adverse weather;
    c. Natural Disaster;
    d. mechanical breakdown of the transport You planned to travel on;

    • Nice, thanks. I need to look into whether there is a minimum amount for it to kick in. Flights were bought on Amex, accommodation wasn't.

        Yep it covers accommodation, just gotta read that tnc.

        Maybe check the cc you used for accommodation.

        Good luck

    We flew Bonza. Return flight cancelled. Had to rebook with Jetstar, then accommodation, then flight home. Travel insurance paid everything. That was with Kogan insurance believe it or not.

    • Thanks. Interesting that this Kogan policy cancellation is defined as before you leave home and the exclusion about caused by the airline (even before you leave home) also doesn't apply to accommodation costs - which is a lot more what you would expect. The Kogan one is Travel Insurance Partners Pty Limited, which looks like the same one as Medibank Private/AHM/Australia Post.

  • their conditions of carriage don't stipulate they'll ever get you there

    So what are you paying them for??

    • Then you get a refund (which Jetstar did), but they're not covering anything that had to be cancelled. You're not supposed to book anything at the destination in the belief they're going to get you there (like a night at a hotel), because you getting there is optional/aspirational for them.

      • Yeah I don't agree with that at all, and I doubt the courts would agree either if push came to shove.

  • That it should have in massive capital letters, cancellation except the most common reason for cancellation?

    hahahahahahahaha
