35km Walk - Best Footwear & Other Recommendations

I've signed up to do a 35km walk, and looking to buy some new trainers, wondered if anyone had some recommendations? Will be using them to walk but also a little bit of running as I train.

I don't have a desire to go to a sports shop, so looking to pick something up online.

Initial findings from Google I have are:

Walkrides:
Nike ACG Lowcate
GT-2000 SX
Asics Gel-Kayano 30

Also, any other tips if anyone has done something similar would be great

definitely wearem a little bit before the big walk, find out hwhere the hotspots are likely to form

  • A mate of mine did the oxfam 100km one a while ago…he experienced a lot of chafing…in particular between his buttcheeks! Go figure!

    • I was just looking at the upcoming Woolies catalogue specials and they now have Men's Damn Dry Briefs. Your mate could have used a pair!

    • between his buttcheeks!

      Was he wearing high heels?

      • No he wasn't. Does wearing high heels make one chafe between one's butt cheeks? 🤔

        • only if they are grinding on the dancefloor

Presumably you over pronate if you’re looking st the Kayano and GT’s?

They’re both for mild pronation so if you get it wrong it’s not going to be too bad. That being said use for some time and you’ll feel the difference

I run 30km each week and walk about another 15 on alternate days (excluding regular daily walking) and have used the following (I have a neutral foot):
    - Nimbus (various iterations) my favourite shoe to run in
    - Triumph 19 bought to use when walking but also suitable for running. Bought because they were cheap. Decent shoe
    - Wave Sky 6 very, very close to the Nimbus, more comfortable to walk in than the nimbus but nimbus is better for running

Presumably your walk will be off road? If so I’d get some trail runners. If you’re on uneven surfaces then you will feel a lot thoigh the soles of your foot comparing runners to trail runners. Favourites are Salomon XA Pro 3D but Asics Trabaco are decent. Trabaco better to run in Salomon better for off road walking as the soles and fit are more sturdy. Comparing the two the Salomon’s kill the asics off road

    • Thanks for this, the walk is actually mostly footpath - I did look at trail runners as the soles look much more durable, but wondered if these would be too hard for such a long walk

      • I could be wrong, but trail runners are not harder, they are just supposed to provide more support, stability, grip and be a bit more durable.

      • You get different trail runners for different terrains. Those that are made for sticking to rocks can have quite soft soles. But they are generally made of tougher materials

My mate walks and hikes a lot (30km+) and loves Hoka shoes. Don't forgot really good socks as well.

I've done some walks like this, and some multi-week long-distance walks.

The important things are to choose shoes which are appropriate for the terrain you're walking on, and which fit your feet comfortably. The latter is difficult if buying by mail order, and you often only really know once you've done distance in them. If you have to do that, choose suppliers which have friendly return policies and order a few. Try them out walking around inside until you think you've got the right ones.

If you don't want to suffer with blisters and injuries from the day of the walk (though age, weight and general fitness are big factors too), make sure you train to a walking program building up so that you can do at least 25km comfortably.

Last year and again this year I did 3-week/500 km walks, covering 20 - 35 km per day on a mix of asphalt, gravel and bush tracks.
I used a pair of Asics GT-2000 9 last year and liked them. I wasn't able to get new ones of those (or the versions 10 or 11) at a good price, so ended up wearing the same pair again for this year's walk. They were pretty worn by then but did the job.

My partner went through half a dozen different shoes before making the final decision. She (and others I've chatted to) like Brooks Cascadias for that type of walking but they don't fit me well.
