Hi all, my edu Autocad licence will expire soon, any good deals out there for single, occasional use licences for AutoCad LT?
I just want it to try draw up plans for a backyard studio I’d like to someday construct.

Thats plan A :)
Use MS Paint instead?
are clones such as qcad, freecad, etc suitable?
Been using freecad for a few years now. Good software and still getting better. I only use it for 3d modeling and assemblies so not sure how good it is for plans but I've see a lot of that use case on forums.
Do you know if it will open dwg files that I've been using in AutoCad LT?
QCAD will work - Suitable for DWG to 2023. It costs 40 Euro. The interface is different.
If you are comfortable with an alternative Nanocad {Free} can work with DWG 2013. The software is free of charge. It is an AutoCAD Clone. You can pay for a later version with better compatibility.
You can convert DWG/DXF and other file versions with ODA
I'd be keen to try some of these, good call!
AutoCAD is a premium software package and includes masses of features that even most professionals don't use.
It can charge a premium because drafting offices keep buying licenses out of habit and everyone uses DWGs. It's massively overpriced as a result, even when on sale.
For your situation you'd be better off just downloading something free like FreeCAD, LibreCAD or SketchUp.
Yep, its circa $700 for the LT version for 1 year… I'm likely to only use it on weekends so its hardly worth it..

Can confirm.

Definitely. Having said that, I have tried LibreCAD, and it was rough as someone with a lot of AutoCAD muscle memory. No command line, etc…
Draftsight was great until Dassault Systems made it paid and then bricked everyone's free license…
no command line? are you sure? i thought you just press space bar in all those autocad-like programs and get the command line
qcad certainly does https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/106129/qcad.png
Your portal will still work once you are alumni. My uni login still works and validates, graduated from there 2-3 years ago. They don’t check for enrolment but an active uni account.
Draw it up now before it expires…
