JB Hi-Fi iPad Price Jack & Fake Discount

See edit at the end.
TLDR; I’m an idiot who can’t read.

I was recently looking at the iPad lineup as I'm considering an upgrade. I have been following prices closely and notice today that 10th gen iPad wifi 64GB is "on sale" at JB HiFi for $849 with a "discount" of $150 from normal price of $999.

This immediately struck me as weird, because this RRP is the price JB have been selling the 256GB model with no discount. In fact, you can buy the 64GB model from Apple today with no discount for $749, and the 256GB model with no discount for $999.

https://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-ipad/ipad

You notice that JB is also advertising the normal price of the 256GB model as $1249 now, so their discount price is $1099, which is actually $100 more expensive than Apple (this is the wifi+cellular price at Apple).

Looking at JB and Apple (and all other stores) recent 10th gen iPad pricing, I'm fairly sure this is a price jack/fake discount making people think they are getting a $150 discount when they are actually paying $100 more than normal RRP.

EDIT: Oh lol, iPad air

My bad, sorry JB HiFi.. I can't read!

    you have different products linked

    due diligence was not done

    • It's easy to confuse the two. I bought air one recently, still backordered in Officeworks. The Air 5 10.9 64gb wifi is $849, while iPad 10 10.9 64gb wifi is $647.

How? Is it not common knowledge that there's iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air and 2 sizes of iPad Pro? Who out there isn't up to date with every Apple product line?? Reminds me of the time I met someone who couldn't tell apart a base iPhone and pro iPhone. Like how???

There are two different models here.

JB is selling the iPad Air on sale which is $999 from the Apple Store directly.

The link you provided for the Apple Store is for the standard iPad. This is on sale for $649 at JB Hifi.

    Hope that makes sense

I was recently looking at the Ozbargain site as I'm considering posting some good sales that we have in store, however lunchbox99 seems to accuse me of price jacking however my prices are 1:1 with apple.

A major retailer price jacking to make discounts look good?
    Noooooo! Never!…

(But funnily enough, they actually didn’t in this example 😂)

  • OP you need to start taking this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/796404 .

Alright punters. I have edited my post and accept I was wrong. Morning reading comprehension not good.

Should I reword the title, or leave it for an accurate record of my mistake.

I don't think it will enter ozbargain meme status but I think you should leave it. Someone will come across this thread in 20 years and get a laugh out of it.

  • The real scam is Apple still charging $250 to jump from 64GB to 256GB.

    • Indeed. But it lets them price the 64GB model lower than they perhaps value the device overall. The other way they could have done it is leave features out of the lower cost model, like less RAM or slower wifi, and no one would prefer that.
