Electric Toothbrush with App for Multiple People

Got a Oral B Smart 1 from the recent deal.

It's no better in RPM or other features then the other electric toothbrushes we've had for up to 10 years. We got it for the app solely as a motivational tool for the kids. The first time we used it it seemed to work fine but then we reached these problems:

  • it doesn't work with multiple phones properly. There's the kind of work around by turning off auto sync but in our experience it's not really working properly.
  • It keeps trying to sync the other details and we end up with a bunch of unguided sessions which we cannot get rid of. while the unguided sessions do not affect the averages the kids do not want to see a bunch of rubbish and it completely demotivates them.
  • On one of our kids' phones it keeps hanging after two minutes and not recording the session. It will record a session under two minutes.
  • on another phone after the brush it asks about flossing and rinse. The phone timed out while they were doing that and when we turned it on the session was gone and recorded as 0:00.
  • Sometimes randomly it just does not start recording.
  • in the end it means before pressing we have to go and play with the phone for a few minutes - brushing has gone from something kids can do by themselves to a fully supervised event.

We've only had this a few days and already the kids have gone from excited about brushing their teeth to not wanting anything to do with it anymore.

Looking at the reviews it seems that they are neglecting Android phones and this might work properly with iphones.

it's obviously designed to make you buy one handle per user which is ridiculous given the battery dies after three years. I'm not willing to do this.

Are there other models or brands of electric toothbrush which actually work with multiple users and have an app? I assume the oral B app is buggy for all its brushes.

it doesn't work with multiple phones properly.

Probably best not to share a tooth brush anyways..

You realise you take the heads off the handle right? Otherwise mould grows inside.
And they even come with cases and stands that hold multiple heads.

    There’s an app for everything…

Get them their own brush. They'll need it when they go to friends place for sleepovers anyway. And whichever fool drops and breaks theirs can go down to a dumb brush without needing to buy a new smart one.

    • they can take a dumb brush for the few days sleepovers per year rather than dropping another $75-150 for another handle. We have a bunch of other dumb Oral B handles with the same RPM etc already. Once they hit 3yrs or so the battery/motor degrades and we get a new one. I don't want to get 2 new at a time.

    App-connected toothbrushes.

And I thought internet-connected fridges were the most pointless things I'd ever heard of. It only takes 2 minutes to brush teeth, and if a kid needs an app to finish the task, then something is going sorely wrong somewhere.

    • The most useful thing about the app is that it automatically changes the clock on the base station for daylight savings.

sure, and if everyone was a perfect parent, dentists would all be out of work.
and then there's the comment above saying I should buy 1 for each kid.

      it's all or nothing right?

A new electric brush is cheaper than a single filling at the dentist.

        • That's so smart. So if i sheeple and buy multiple handles how does that fix:

          1. it keeps hanging after two minutes and not recording the session. It will record a session under two minutes

          2. after the brush it asks about flossing and rinse. The phone timed out while they were doing that and when we turned it on the session was gone and recorded as 0:00.

          3. Sometimes randomly it just does not start recording.

    • The new handles have smart coaching which is more complex than a simple quadrant timer.

    • What generation are you from?

  • If each user has their own handle, the number of charge cycles decreases proportionately, For as long as I can remember we've had individual handles in my household and the lithium ion ones were still going fine when we all upgraded to iO. Handles may be purchased as spare parts.

    • Lithium ion batteries have a limited life and degrade with time Whether you use them or not.

  • I agree it's absurd how many variations oral B has come up with for its brushes. And the astronomical pricing.. but the basic rechargeable ones have a built in buzzer that indicates when two minutes are up - and I have found it surprisingly useful. We now all brush for the full two minutes instead of stopping at what we guess it probably is - which was usually more like one minute I now realise. Yes only one handle required, the heads swap very easily.

If you know how to brush your teeth properly you don’t need a timer. If you don’t know how to brush your teeth properly a timer is not going to help much; it just means your going to brush your teeth improperly for longer (or shorter).
Lesson: learn how to brush your teeth properly; it’s not about time.

    • My last set even came with a holder that held 4 heads. They advertise how each charge can last several sessions. I can't believe people think you need to buy a handle each.

      • You don't have to buy a handle each, life is just so much better if you do - more than one person can brush at the same time.

        • well it's not recording and crashing now - only using with 1 phone. having 2 handles won't change that.

  • your using something in an improper way, and you want it to work.

    • Explain

      1. it keeps hanging after two minutes and not recording the session. It will record a session under two minutes

      2. after the brush it asks about flossing and rinse. The phone timed out while they were doing that and when we turned it on the session was gone and recorded as 0:00.

      3. Sometimes randomly it just does not start recording.

And no, the handle does not have any intelligence about what phone it's connecting to. Otherwise, you would have to throw the handle out every time you reset your phone or get a new phone.
