What Is The Best (Bargain-Wise) Way to Buy a New iPhone?

Hello folks,

I am looking to buy a new iPhone, and wanted to see your thoughts on the best way to go about it.

From my knowledge, buying Apple gift cards when they're at 20x points at Coles/Woolworths (or Big W, as they are now currently), and then using those when Cashrewards/ShopBack offer upsized cashback at Apple seems to be the best way.

Is there a better/more profitable way? I am insistent on buying from the Apple store, compared to JB Hi-Fi or Officeworks.

Appreciate your thoughts. 🙂

Buy second hand, you won't impress anyone with a new iPhone. It's not 2009..

I am not looking to impress, haha. I want it for myself. 🙂

With the inflation, get it on the plan for 24 months.

Wait till next months new iPhone 15 range then snap up any stock clearance deals on previous gens before they sell out.

Alternatively, Vodafone do $1,100 off new iPhones on a pricey monthly plan that averages out to $33/month (24 months * $79 - $1,100 / 24).

    • Wait till next months new iPhone 15 range then snap up any stock clearance deals on previous gens before they sell out.

Where should I look for these stock clearance deals? I don't think Apple does anything of that sort, does it? Should I look at JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks or The Good Guys?

And are the previous generation models immediately put up for sale after the announcement of the new iPhone? Or would I have to wait until, say, Boxing Day?

      • Yep, all the usual retailer suspects will have assorted runout stock. There's no specific timeframe or models, just need to get lucky. There's no reason not to go to any of those, can even get discounted gift cards to make it even cheaper.

Only reason to go Apple direct is if you're not entirely sure and may return it within 14 days, or are doing that 0% interest financing offer (which still has monthly charges). (Another reason is educational pricing but I believe doesn't apply to iPhones.)

  • and then using those when Cashrewards/ShopBack offer upsized cashback at Apple seems to be the best way.

If you're intending on buying a newly announced device, those devices are usually excluded from the cashback for at least 3? months after they're announced from the upsized cashback offers.

    • Oh, is that so? I was actually intending to buy the new iPhone when it comes out, and waiting for upsized cashback to buy it. But, I didn't know that new models are excluded from upsized cashback…

Discounted Apple gift cards, or the bonus points thingy as you said.

Then salary sacrifice it if you can.

  • Keep an eye out for discounted Apple Gift Cards. Earlier this year Giftcards.com.au had 15% off Apple Gift Cards and about a month ago they had 10%off. I purchase $4200 for $3570 then loaded them into my Apple account ready for iPhone 15 pro max and a MacBook (purchasing thru Apple Education) for my grandson for high school next year.

    • Oh, that's nice. If you're purchasing a MacBook, you should wait until mid-January. Apple runs a back-to-school promotion during that time, which gives you free AirPods with MacBook purchase.

Actually, it's back-to-university. If you know someone that has a university ID card, then this would be a good deal to wait for.

      • You do get the AirPods with the Education pricing as well as I bought one last year for myself. Also around the end of January or just into February Cashback a promotion where you can get up to $100 as well.

why? unless youre planning to change of mind within 14days i dont see the point

you buy from an aussie big box store and can literally take it to applestore for any device problems too,

someone correct me if im wrong

    • It's a silly reason - I have been thinking before now that buying from Apple should make it easier to have the gadgets fixed, repaired or refunded if it comes to that. And I've never bought any of my Apple products from anywhere else therefore.

But it looks like I will be able to take my product back to Apple if any of those scenarios arise, even if if buy from other retailers (Officeworks etc.) I guess I'll keep my options open now; but still, there's something 'different' about buying directly from Apple, hehe.

There's nothing different at all, it's just a novelty to buy direct that wears off after the first purchase.

All Apple products are covered by their warranty/repair regardless which retailer you purchased from. Even ones purchased from abroad, although there's more limitations on some (e.g. a UK version iPhone is more likely to be taken away to be repaired than given a brand new replacement on the spot if it was local AU one).
