Acer Nitro 16", AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS

Hey everyone. In reference to this posted deal:

I'm looking for a laptop for my son who can use this off battery (4 to 5 hrs) for his day to day school work and then come home, plug in and play games on.

Realistically is this too much to ask from this one? I know it says it has 8 hrs battery life, but can anyone comment on how long it would last with basic word, excel, PowerPoint duties?

Thanks in advance.

  • At 2.7kg and being a 16" screen, it wouldn't be a fun time lugging it to and from school. Way too big and bulky for your kid

Would be lucky to hit 4hrs SoT imo

I know it's not ideal but he's coming out of a fairly bulky laptop that's dying. He's driven to school everyday so it's not like he's got to lug it around much. Just trying to find a happy medium between getting him a gaming option but still having the battery life to get him through a school day. And at this price point I don't think there is much better???

  • There was a review out. With general use they were able to achieve 4-5 hours SoT

    • Don't suppose you'd have a link to that review would you? Thanks for the info 👍👍

      • I think it's within the ozb post, i'll have a look. It's already OOS though I should add.

        • Thanks for that. Appreciate it. It is out of stock in store, but can be ordered for click and collect apparently. Cheers 👍👍

  • Will a 16” fit in his school bag? Honestly, this has a very large footprint

    • Most backpacks only go up to 15.6", when you factor in a case as well for the 16" laptop I'd doubt it'd fit in many bags comfortably

    idea?
    1. cheap desktop gaming pc AND
    2. refurb laptop with a new battery like gen 8 i5
    just search ozbargain for deals

~$1200ish total should solve your problems

    • I'd do this. Get something smaller, lighter and better battery life for school work. Refurb laptop good idea.

There are plenty of really decent gaming desktops for only $600-800 these days, which will perform at least as well as this laptop in games. Probably better in the GPU department, and with lots of room for cheap upgrades down the track. Laptop you are stuck with the same CPU/GPU combo and can only upgrade the RAM and SSD which won't do much for gaming performance. I got a cheap Nitro 5 gaming laptop less than 2 years ago and the older i5 CPU is really struggling in modern titles so I need to upgrade the whole thing.

Otherwise you'd be up for spending more like $2000+ for a laptop that is both gaming capable and good battery life/portability for school.

  • It's an Acer laptop so please get the extended warranty.
Mark my words in stone with a chisel and blood if you don't!
Great deal but for its specs it's cheap for a reason.
