I mean, I can see how the tech and features of this radar-based presence sensor are pretty good, but they really need to step up their marketing game.
It's going to take a lot more than an banner that says "Presence sensor > PIR + Light sensor" to get most people to spend $167 or $197!

  • After the initial hype there has been a lot of problems raised with the reliability of this sensor. If you read some of the more recent (non sponsored) reviews it doesn’t fill me with confidence to spend nearly $200 on it.

    • +2

can you share a few? I've only seen glowing reviews when it came out.

      • you can return within 30 days with Amazon, that's what I am going to do if it doesn't work as expected. I have found mixed reviews about the product

      • Don’t have time to track them down now but the common theme was that there was large number of false positives where it would think you’re still in the room when you were not and also that it would detect multiple people when there was only one.

I understand there was some improvement in the firmware but may not have fixed everything.

      • Ceiling fans set it off which is kind of a deal breaker unless you can do some clever positioning. I've seen someone 3d print and cover and put foil under it to block vision of the fan.

    • The original firmware yes, but the new version

Their PIR sensor already has light sensor as well and they are around $20. So why would I spend $167 on this?

    • +1

Same question. I have some 15 dollar ones that I've never had an issue with for presence detection.

Their PIR sensor already has light sensor as well and they are around $20. So why would I spend $167 on this?

This is completely different to a PIR sensor. A PIR sensor cannot be used for true presence detection - it can only be used for motion detection.

PIR sensors can switch a light on when you enter the room, but if you're sitting down on a sofa watching TV or using a computer, it wouldn't know you're still there and the lights would go off. A mmWave presence sensor like this is able to detect motion from your breathing and know you're still there.

You can use it in a bathroom to detect when you're still having a shower behind a shower stall so the lights won't suddenly switch off on you. A PIR sensor cannot sense through glass.

This newer FP2 model also supports zones so you could set it such that if you sit on a particular armchair a reading light will turn on, or if you sit at a desk, only that desk's light will turn on, etc.

Yes, there's definitely a profound difference, but until it matures/cheapens, I'm happy to just use PIR with some other enhancements. For example, in Home Assistant, my Living Room Occupancy sensor is based on the PIR motion sensor in the room OR if the TV is on… a simple, cheap workaround.

For the bathroom/shower, I consider the exhaust fan to be a signal to override PIR inactivity.

        • That's great, but for some other people a PIR sensor just doesn't work. The fact that it's constantly sold out even at a crazy $199 is testament to that.

The ventilation in my unit's bathroom runs 24/7 so the best way for my situation is an actual presence sensor that simply knows if there's someone there or not - no need for any workarounds. I use the cheaper ~$70 FP1 which works great.

Linking occupancy to whether the TV is on could work if you literally only use the living room to watch TV. I barely have my TV on so that wouldn't work for me. It's a perfect use case for a presence sensor - it'll know if I'm just sitting on the sofa reading something on my tablet or at my desk browsing OzB. A PIR would not work for that.

If your living space is open-plan you could use one FP2 to e.g. cover both your living room and kitchen instead of buying two FP1s.

Everyone's home and automation design is different so there's no one solution for everyone. A PIR sensor could work perfectly fine for some situations but be frustrating to use in other situations. If it works perfectly for your use case then that's great, but some situations call for an actual presence sensor and not just a motion sensor.

          • @eug: For sure… that's all valid. I just thought I'd share some suggestions in case they were of value to others.

    • Totally different device

  • OOS so fast! Anyone here get one?

  • The price for these are insane and not worth it for their functionality. I was expecting up to $100 so I could snag it on special for $50 or something and then I saw the price of local stock on Amazon. Yeah, I'll just wait on these, thanks.

  • Aqara FP2 is OOS, the other 3 products are still available.

  • +1

I have the FP1, was ~$60. It's useful for the rooms where PIR sensors time out (browsing ozB on the toilet etc). Negative is it's wired.

  • Go for this if for HA

Same technology, less official support. But the price justifies.

    • The technology isn't exactly the same; that eBay one uses an LD2410 module which runs at 24GHz while the FP2 runs at 60GHz which gives it greater resolution allowing for features like being able to define zones, and a greater ability to detect breathing for when a person is sitting still.

If all you need is basic presence sensing then the LD2410 will certainly do the job, although it's more comparable to the FP1 than the FP2.

If you like tinkering you could buy an LD2410 module and an ESP32 board and wire it up yourself.

  • I use home assistant and believe for me it will be useful for turning on different lights in a large room depending on the persons location. Not sure how good they are or even how compatible it is with home assistant….

  • +1

Hmm, it appears to be quite pricey given its functionality. Depending on the configuration using a basic PIR sensor, it might offer more utility than this option. Consider installing a basic PIR sensor (costing around $15-$25) in a ceiling corner to cover the shower and bathroom area – this would prevent the lights from turning off while showering. Generally, IoT devices tend to become more affordable, not the other way around.

    • +1

Mmm, not sure if it's worth a neg since it was the best price for this device. It's expensive yes, but you wouldn't neg an iPhone deal simply because a Xiaomi phone is cheaper.

Depending on the configuration using a basic PIR sensor, it might offer more utility than this option.

How can a PIR sensor offer more utility than this?

Generally, IoT devices tend to become more affordable, not the other way around.

Price always goes up when functionality goes up. This does a lot more than a basic PIR sensor.

  • FWIW Bing Lee is also selling it for the same price - almost bought it on their eBay shop for $154 (have a $15 voucher plus free shipping) but still couldn't justify it, although it makes a bit of sense with covering larger areas as with zones you can effectively replace two or more sensors with one. Now out of stock, but can order it from them…. https://www.binglee.com.au/products/fp2-presence-sensor-ps-s….

Currently they are still at an insane premium - I might wait until the price becomes more reasonable or simply build my own sensors. For the same price as one of these, could make 6 or so using esp32 dev boards with HLK-LD1155H-24G sensors.

  • I got this for my Home Assistant setup in Zigbee wall version. Works as expected but ceiling fan sets off so far from ideal there!
Only about $25 AUD so far cheaper but similar tech without all the clever zone stuff the Aqara does
