TIDAL No Longer Accepting Overseas Bank / Credit Cards

Hey OzBers,

Just saw an email from Tidal to my account this morning.

Hi,

We would like to provide you with an important update regarding the acceptance of payment cards in light of recent changes in the handling of Argentine Peso (ARS) currency exchange by Visa and Mastercard. As a result of these changes, our payment processor will now only accept cards issued by Argentine banks for the foreseeable future. This includes both Visa and Mastercard.

Depending on your current country of residence, you have a few options available to you:

If you currently live in Argentina and are using a VISA or MASTERCARD card that was not issued by an Argentine bank, please update your payment method to a card issued in Argentina. Failure to do so may lead to billing failure and, ultimately, the cancellation of your subscription.

If you have moved to a different country, you will need to create a new TIDAL account using a different username and register it in the new country where you currently reside. Once your new account is set up, we can assist you in transferring all your playlists and favorites.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the TIDAL Support team here.

This sounds like the hack from this page and this page is no longer valid :(

What will you do?

    At least they apologised…

  • Yeah just got this too…

  • damn, 1 step ahead huh

  • Got the same message. Party over sadly :(

  • RIP. Let’s hope other companies don’t start doing this!!

  • I have been using this hack for a year or so. It's going to be disappointing to see it go. I certainly won't do anything until my account is cancelled.

If it does get cancelled, I already have access to YouTube music, so might just take the sound quality loss on the chin. If another work around for another country pops up, even if it's not a huge discount, I might jump on.

Although I also received this email, my bet is that accounts don't get cancelled for a while.

  • Dang flabbit!

  • +2

I will just let the payment fail and then uninstall. Back to youtube music - no biggie.

  • I just got the email and was coming to see what others said. I think I will use YouTube Music + <REDACTED> what isn't available.

    hello darkness my old friend

…but in crummy YouTube Music quality :(

    Can we use amex?

    • +1

I've got my Amex on there at the moment. Time will tell if it bounces/gets cancelled

    • I tried to put my American Express in yesterday and it didn't accept it. Anyone else have luck?

      • It let me do it when I first signed up, but yeah won't let me change it to another Amex now. Doh!

  • Any suggestions on what's the next best/cheapest alternative? What a shame…

I think this is the only email I've received from Tidal that has not been completely in spanish. So nice of them to specifically consider us english-only speaking Argentinians :)

Sounds like this isn't a new thing

I think its all Argentina cards - not just TIDAL - looks like ride is over for now

I will just keep using it till they call it a day

  • One I’m my emails got the email and the other didn’t.

If it's just an Argentina issue I guess we can still migrate to other countries potentially. Albania is 10 euros for hifi family which converts to 17 aussie. Haven't checked through many countries on their list of supported ones but when I have time later I will and report back if I find a cheaper one

    • +5

Based on the Hifi plus individual plan, I did some mock accounts to test the waters. Bulgaria was about $14aud If I remember correctly, Romania was around this price as well.

United Arab Emirates is 11 Dirham. 1 dirham is about 42c AUD.

This makes the UAE tidal about $4.66 AUD currently. This is the cheapest I can find currently. It accepted PayPal with no issue. There is a little switch when signing up that notes 2 dirham for 2 months trial. I have set this up for myself incase my tidal gets cancelled tomorrow, as my billing is tomorrow.

I can take 4-5 AUD a month for hifi plus.

For context, I'm using PIA as the VPN to test this.

      • Thanks - might be the fallback if/when my account is cancelled.

      • Not all heroes wear capes, thank you!

      • How about Nigeria ? ant they cheepest after ARS or UAE the cheepest ?

        • I didn't look into Nigeria to be honest. Could be another good option with the exchange. Maybe someone here can give it a go and report back?

      • United Arab Emirates is 11 Dirham. 1 dirham is about 42c AUD.

Are you sure this is Dirham and not USD? when looking at this one?

        This article https://gulfnews.com/entertainment/music/music-streaming-ser…
says "TIDAL HiFi costs $5.50/month (Dh20.20), while TIDAL HiFi Plus is $11/month"

        • It definitely appeared as dirham when I did it.
When you enter into the subscription section, it shows in the dollar of the country you are "in". When I did Romania it showed in RON, and I'm confident when I flew over the UAE it showed 11 in DIR.

Let's get another ozb to test this out!

  • I did the same with PIA, connected to UAE, checked location which showed as UAE then looked at Tidal but pricing showed as $.
These dollars match with the article I linked. Would like to know for sure as I am also looking for an alternative.

On another note when I connect to Nigeria, google shows me in Romania and Tidal displays RON (Also Romania).
I suspect this is a quirk of the IP that PIA is using for Nigeria though.

    • Hmm interesting. I may have been mistaken when I was doing it. I did do a few mock accounts at once with a few different currencies. Il keep an eye on this forum. Thanks JC.

No problem, let me know how you go. Would be great if it works.
The best i have found that works with PIA so far is Malaysia. - 22.35MYR for Family HiFi = $7.42AUD
I haven't tested actual payment yet though.

    • Have you tested payment yet? Did you happen to notice how much just individual HIFI would be?

      • No not yet, my Argentina has gone through for another month so will wait and see.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1LqR-8AWvy1X4HfYH… Has the pricing for all tiers and other countries as well.

        • +3

Just signed up for family using Tunnel Bear and Nigeria. Price has increased slightly. Works out at $3.56 USD /month for Family HIFI

          • @Pulse123: Nice, looks the like the next best option. What payment options are there for Nigeria?

            • @JC-RFC: Seems it accepted my MasterCard with no issues. Still haven't been charged yet though. Currently on a 60 day free trial.

I'd fall back to my local media server, I have most of the albums I listen to in 24 bits. Plus YouTube and Amazon is enough to have a quick listen in the car.

Today they emails me that family plan is increasing to 890$ ARS. Need to find another cheaper destination.

  • Just signed up to Tidal HiFi Plus family plan from another country via a relative… Same service, just a little more, and have a few spare spots left as well.

Also transferred my playlists across… took many years to curate so didn't want to loose them.

    • From which country did you signup from ?

    • PM sent

    • Did you need to transfer individual songs across or can you do a whole playlist?

  • $1.00 Hi-Fi Plus Fam charged yesterday.

    • Mine was charged yesterday too

  • Just received an email this morning confirming that my sub has been cancelled due to non payment.
Oh well, I'll keep my $1.6 per month and stick to youtube music. I only got Tidal to use in my Tesla and it was stupid that you can't even shuffle a playlist.
Wouldn't pay anymore than what I've been paying for that reason alone.

  • Tu suscripción a TIDAL se ha cancelado por incumplimiento de pago.

Worked last month but today i got shut down.

Which other streaming services and regions are a good play atm?

  • Sub cancelled

  • +2

Wow, cancelled quickly. No grace period. Thought I’d have a bit longer to swap.
Both Nigeria and Brazil similarly priced but found Nigeria had less of my playlist available after trying both.
    Also Brazil accept PayPal.

  • They charged me on 1 Sept but now 1 Oct have sent me the non-payment email.

I been using Macquarie bank savings Mastercard and been working no probs till today.

  • I tried Nigeria. ticked the box to pay USD0.90 upfront to get a longer trial period. This way I could check the payment went through.

A little tip - the payment didn't go through for me initially (same vague error message as AR) until I deactivated VPN then clicked Pay.

  • Can we move our current accounts from ARG to another country?

  • Went with Brazil, used Paypal with a new account. Its not as good as ARG obviously but $6 odd isn't too bad.

  • So what is the next best country to reside in??

  • Brazil 1 month charge me $16.99USD for family = $28+AUD so more expensive than Australia price. Cancelled and back to Nigeria. Assumed $16.99 would be in REAL not USD but knew I couldn’t be sure until bill was processed.

I’m guessing the issue here was tunnel bear not giving Brazilian Real.
Pia gives Romanian currency for Brazil and Nigeria so no good either.
I suspect Tidal is implementing some anti vpn measures.
    TunnelBear Nigeria still works correctly.

  • UAE no go at AUS$25, I'll try Columbia or Brazil next

  • Following this thread. I just found out my Tidal account has been cancelled recently as I haven't used the service for a while. I reached out to CS and was told the same thing about their payment system not accepting cards from overseas.

  • +1

G'day gang. I signed up to Nigeria, used PIA then disconnected to complete the payment.

I went HI-FI Plus which is "$4.67", I'm guessing USD. But time will tell in 60 days.

Interestingly when I downloaded the app, I had to connect to PIA again to log in. Somehow my Australian IP is flagged as a robot and blocked. There was a warning that popped up.

Once logged in I disconnected and everything is working fine including downloads for offline mode.

I had given Qobuz a go for a little but they mustn't have any Aussie servers, downloads were SO slow and I'm on 1gps FTTP. It is quite expensive too.
