It states "Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months" but mine says "Arriving Tue, 29 Aug" from this order. YMMV of course!
So back to intel and hardware transcoding?
Get this if you share Plex etc.
I have the 2019 version and it’s rocking along solidly. Just checking this out because of curiosity.
I bought this last month and haven't set it up yet because of no drives, waiting for a HDD deal… ;_;
Great find !
After a recent data loss incident I've realised data isn't safe no matter how new the device and am looking into better backup practices now (bit too late, but I guess I only had to learn once?)
I've already got a dedicated machine for plex and HA so don't need anything super powerful, but if I wanted something for local backups of things like pictures, videos, computer files etc, would I be better off getting something like the DS423 that's a bit cheaper, or spend the little bit more and get this? As I said, it'll be purely for backup but wouldn't mind spending a touch more now if it meant a bit more futureproofing or something in the future?
Just utilise RAID so if a hard drive fails, you can just replace it without suffering data loss.
Raid does nothing if a file is accidentally deleted or corrupted. A live connection to your data is not a backup
RAID is not backup.
your a backup
I've got a second 2 bay synology in my shed connected via a power line adapter and backup the most important data including photos. It's served me well so far.
Also have a usb drive connected directly into the synology as another backup.
Can't go wrong with too many backups.
Iif you have an ok NBN upload speed, you can setup a backup with another mate who has a synology and vice versa. I've considered doing this but not tried it yet.
Yup, off site backup is the way to go. Find someone who can store your device and backup. I use my nas for home, and my brother in-law uses one for business. I send my backups to him, and he sends his backups to me. Both Synology NAS's.
Since you have HA I reckon you're a fan of everything-local. But incidents like burglary, fire, etc. could do the damage. One suggestion is to encrypt your data and send it to a cloud - I don't like it myself! The other would be to buy such NAS and leave it in your parent's house and sync your data with that. It's not going to be super cheap and needs a bit of networking knowledge like potentially setting up vpn, etc.
I keep missing this one! Been waiting a while
Not any more. Other selelrs up to $1400
No ecc memory I returned and chose 923+
Do they ever go on sale? I think that is the model I might aim for. Buy once, cry once.
I used 8gb Memoz ram to upgrade and it passed all memory tests. https://amzn.asia/d/hM1XVob
Damn!! missed it.
I'm so mad I missed this, I've been looking for this deal forever! The one time I haven't refreshed on the deal!
Has anyone worked out the electricity cost for running (idle) 24x7?
If it is too high, I will go with a home PC-NAS that I can turn off every night.
No need to calculate the answer is low thats why we buy a nas. if you can afford the nas surely you can afford the elect cost
Over 10 years electricity cost can be much greater than the NAS cost.
Can afford one thing, doesn't mean you can afford something else, especially when the cost is unknown.
Which is why I am asking.
Why not set a power schedule on the NAS ?
Like the other says, set it to run during the day when solar is running and turn it off in the evening.
You can set it to turn on and off on a schedule…
NAS are designed to be running 24x7.
Turning it off every night isn't good for it.
This might give you an idea. https://nascompares.com/guide/qnap-ts-464-and-22tb-wd-red-pr…
Its not exactly the same NAS but they're very similar in terms of power usage, the synology probably uses a tiny bit less power as its cpu is slower and it has less ram etc
Thanks !
They are using a rate of 23.59 cents per kWh for Oz which will be around $50 to $110 per year.
Far out!!!!! I have been checking Amazon almost daily for this one for a month and missed out!
Camelx3….
It's no good with alerts, havei t set up and still haven't received one. This happened in the past aswell so don't trust it to alert me in time.
Fair point. Maybe subscribe the product on ozb as well.
darn late night deals!
picked this up for 575 previously, bear in mind, it only says 6GB max RAM (2GB onboard + 4gb expansion), but I'm using a timetec 16GB (total 18gb) and it's been working perfectly fine.
can you see that it uses the whole amount?
I have 16gb on my current DS918+. It has a lot of cache (14gb out of 16gb cached) so yes it does get used.
Yeh it does, it does end up allocating over the 6GB limit.
Don't suppose you have a link or exact model number? Seems like different makes and models are hit and miss? Thanks :)
@Kompiler: I got model: 76TT26NUS2R8-16G (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07H4XNNXK?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_…)
I found this from this thread on reddit about which memory modules people have tested on which models https://old.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/zxcy8m/the_synolo…
I'm the same. Got the 16gb Timetec with my 423+. Also got the WD SN700 1tb NVMe stick (and installed the 'workaround' to allow DSM7.2 to recognise it as STORAGE and no issues there). I'm also looking at getting a USB to 2.5GB adapter to boost my the 2 x 1gb ethernet ports the DSM 423+ comes with. The link to the discussion is here. You need to install a custom driver to bypass DSM 7.2's lack of support for USB dongles like this on the newer machines.
Any chance anyone can share a screenshot or invoice for price protection?

Big thanks! Appreciate it Moorey :)
Are you able to price match with this somewhere?
@Hellfish10: Price protection through 28 Degrees MasterCard.
I bought this last time for $575. It is awesome! If you get it though I would recommend getting at least 18tb drives to start it off. My system has 3 right now with one slot spare.
