Best Hotel in Melbourne w/ Breakfast

Hi All,

Im spending the night in Melbourne for a birthday celebration with my wife and wanted a recommendation as to which hotel people suggest these days - I havent stayed in the CBD for a decade at least!

Its for next month (Friday night) and I'll be booking it through the AMEX travel site to use up my annual $400 credit.

Not only do i want suggestions for a great hotel (overall room quality), but pool options to use as well as the quality of the buffet breakfast will also come into it. Dont really care about the location tbh….

Now i say "best" but i dont want to spend any more then needed beyond the $400 - dont care about getting a suite etc for a single night…..

So far Ive seen Sheraton, Grand Hyatt, Westin, Langham, Sofitel, Park Hyatt, The Como, Crown Metropol & Promenade(dont include breakfast), QT, Quay West Suites and some others…….

Thanks!

  • If it was a wedding anniversary then Adina Apartment Hotel Pentridge would have been my suggestions

The Langham and the Hyatt generally are rated the best breakfasts. To me the Langham is a more interesting hotel; the Hyatt is fine but it just doesnt really stand out in terms of decor or rooms or whatever from the other zillion 5 star hotels.

    • lol not sure if you are being serious about the Pentridge suggestion….
Are you talking about the Grand or Park Hyatt?

        Grand Hyatt.

I havent stayed at the Pentridge, it actually looks pretty interesting (although the rooms are stock standard bland and it is slightly out of the way). It doesnt do breakfast (I'm sure there are cafes around there though). But thought it would be an amusing wedding anniversary location.

How about the Movenpick Hotel? Free Chocolate and sweets during their chocolate hour.

  • Does your room need to have a high date night rating? BTW, I've long thought this should be an actual thing.

    • Nah, as long as its clean and modern, i dont really care (not planning on being in there much beyond sleeping the night!)

My suggestion: W Melbourne. Toto Washlets in every room.

        • I hear it has a good bar too

  • So you don't wanna spend any money on your wife other than your freebie…

Not sure I can consider it a freebie when the card costs me $395 a year annual fee……also, my wife Is happy for us to stay at home and just into the city for dinner. Second also, it's actually for my birthday, not hers! Lol

  • The Sofitel breakfast was always excellent pre-covid. As was the Langham. Haven’t been since. Can’t comment on the hotels themselves though as I only ever just went for breakfast.

  • Langham's high tea is highly rated so imagine their breakfast offering would be good also.

    • Did a Langham high tea pre covid and it was one of the crappest ones I've done! The dinner buffet is good though! So who knows what breakfast will be like!

      • Breakfast buffet was amazing but my last stay there was pre-Covid.

  • If you like old school style elegance The Langham.
Modern style go for Crown Towers or the W. The Crown Towers edges it out because of their buffet breakfast and their pool is located with the spa on offer at the Crown Complex which is nice. If you want everything available nearby/onsite the Crown Towers and the Crown Complex is hard to beat

Some people still rate the Sofitel but I recon they've lost their touch a bit, the last time I was there they were in the middle of a refurb and it felt more like a coat of paint rather than an actual refresh.
The onsite facilities are pretty average, it's more about what's available nearby. Still a good all round upmarket hotel, especially if you have access to their lounge. They do lack a pool though, they send you down the street to the Novotel if you want to use a pool.

The Park Hyatt might be a Park Hyatt by name but the rooms are extremely outdated and the hotel needs a refresh badly. Last time I was at the Grand Hyatt was pre-Covid but same story there.

If you have access to Amex the Hotel Collection, I'd have a look and maybe spend a little and stay at the Sofitel for two nights to utilise the Hotel Collection benefits.

    • havent heard of this one before - thanks

      • Definitely worth checking them out. It has a quirky vibe and the food is really good too.

  • I would avoid breakfast in the hotel. There are a lot of other great breakfast options in Melbourne, particularly if you have a wander up to Fitzroy. I would also Google a few of the more boutique hotels as well.

    • But are they buffet breakfast though :P

Case in point, and I haven’t actually stayed at the hotel. There is a place called Lyf in Collingwood that would be about $170 for the night if someone booked in for next Friday night. Almost right next door is South of Johnson that does fantastic breakfast options that someone going to a buffet could only dream about. The hotel is a walk down the hill from the 86 tram which will take you back to Southern Cross station. There isn’t a pool at the hotel but Collingwood has a Japanese’s bath house within walking distance at $40 per person. Try something different.
