Halo Peak Butane Heater $29 (Was $69) In Store Only ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Kmart

140

Butane heater from Kmart - takes standard butane cans, same ones as the popular stoves.
You have to use them outside as they produce carbon monoxide as they burn and that can kill. Good heat output relative to size (6,700 BTU) good for camping but definitely not inside a tent.
Seems identical to the Gasmate one that Anaconda sell for $99
Runs for about 1-2 hours depending on setting

In store only now

It's probably a good deal, but I feel like it's a bad product

Why do you think it's a bad product?

    • +2

If you go camping in Tassie of have to look after a market stall in winter I reckon you would think it was an excellent product.
      These work very well

Firstly, I don't expect these cans to last too long in a heater like this, making them somewhat uneconomical. Also the waste from the spent cans as opposed to if you had a heater that ran off a gas bottle. Then there's using the heater outside with nothing to retain the heat means you need to be right it front of it always. People might be in a better situation with good thermals and maybe something like a heated jacket

Yes it is radiant heat and not at all efficient that's all true but if you are camping or at a market and its like $1.50 (can price) for strong warmth and a happy WAG its well worth it. They are for incidental heating.

You're feelings are right. These are the electric fan heaters of the gas world. For one, butane is bastard gas. It has roughly the same energy as propane, but a lower boiling point so it has a tendency to freeze up and the pressure drops. Kmart sells it 3x220g for $4.50, which is the equivalent of $6.80/kg. At that price, to fill a standard bbq 8.5kg tank would cost almost $60!

I've got an Anaconda variant of this (likely the same factory, they're identical except the Kmart one is missing the top handle). Each butane canister lasts about an hour, and they're extremely handy when doing markets and the like.

At this price I might just get a couple as spares

  • I wonder if these can be modded to use a gas bottle.

Gasmate do a version that runs on LPG but its quite exxy. https://www.bcf.com.au/p/gasmate-portable-outdoor-camping-he…
The body looks very similar but the gas internals would be quite different - actually the ceramic element looks larger too.

    • Probably modable with the right regulator attached also, as LPG burn rate / heat is different. So you'd need to cater for the difference in fuel type.

    Not Master chief approved

  • Looks like they are all gone. Link went dead while I was trying to order it.

  • We have one and use it at camp, works well.

    Thank you OP.
Plenty available in store at Watergardens 3038.
    ~18 left after I bought 2.

Shelf still listed $69 but scanning at $29.

  • These are great if you feel the cold when working outside.I use it when camping on icy mornings. Can lasts at least an hour. I swap cans around as they will freeze up mid use. I pop the cannister in warm water and they come back to life in no time if I'm impatient.

  • Dozens of them in Kmart at Ballarat

    • Same price still?

      • Yeah, I was gonna post it on Sunday but found this post already
