Gloss plastic finish on the inside is yuck
Ignore the LE Audio/LC3 support in the specs, as the toggle is feature gated in the Sony Headphones application to a Qualcomm vendor property. I believe this breaks LE Audio for Pixel phones, for example. (There's a modified apk, but YMMV.)

    • oh thats yuck about the feature gating

      • For what it's worth, it appears to be code spaghetti rather than malice, from what I've seen of the app.

I see a method in there that actually checks in the correct manner, they just don't use it.

Sony will fix it up in an app update, it's just (another) bad look for them.

  • you beat me OP, I have my eyes on the earbuds and am waiting until 7pm to order with shopback cashback to get further $20 off

    Have this. AMA.

    • Thoughts & any comparisons to previous models or other brands?

      • +2

Had the xm4. Not quite worth upgrading imo. Don't have other brands of earbuds to compare against.

If you have xm4, you're not missing out on too much, if at all.

        • better than pixel buds pro ?
if have the pixel phone also

          • +2

@Asingh206: just some insight on the pixel buds pro

i had them with my pixel 7 pro, really underwhelming. worse audio than my samsung galaxy buds 2 and they werent the most comfy (ymmv)

dont think they were the best, i got them for free but still wouldnt buy it

          • @Asingh206: Have the pixel 6 Pro, don't have the pixel buds Pro. Looks like frnaky has replied.

        • What about fit wise? Which is more comfortable and has more bass?

          • +2

@Feeblely: Assuming you're asking me about the xm5 vs xm4.

Fit wise, the medium sized buds of the xm5 is physically smaller than the medium sized buds of the xm4s. How? Why? I don't know. But they still fit well enough but I'm abit more tossed between medium and large size now and have switched back and forth several times now. I never had issues with xm4 fit as some people had.. it now comes with an extra XS size buds too.

As they're smaller than the xm4 they dont stick out as much out of your ear but honestly I don't notice it either way. The xm5 will look better on your head as it doesn't stick out as much…

Comfort wise, no real improvement imo. The xm4 is already quite comfy and feels identical.

Bass wise, neither of these are great options for bass in my opinion. You can just turn up the bass in the Sony headphones app, and while they're both still somewhat underwhelming, xm5 is better of the two in this sense, not by a lot

@lawyerz: Im coming from the xm3 and those are quite comfortable for me surpisingly. The samsung buds pro were unwearable though and bass on the samsung was non existant even with eq. I actually find the bass in the xm3 great, especially with the +10 bass setting.

Looks like I might try and just get the xm4 on sale as its silimiar to the xm5 and mucb cheaper.

Out of curiosity, do you know of any better buds for bass?

              • +2

@Feeblely: Had the xm3s too. The xm4s were quite a big jump from the xm3s.

I've seen xm4s going under $150 on eBay, making it quite a bit cheaper. I have an unhealthy obsession with having the latest and greatest, and now that I have the xm5s, I would have been happy keeping the xm4.

I'm not familiar with other buds sorry. Suspect it's small size just means there's physical limitations to bass compared to full headphones.

                • @lawyerz: No worries, you've definitely convinced me on the xm4's!

  • Thanks OP.

  • I got this at full rrp and find them better than buds pro 2, though it is much better fit than the xm4 that didn't fit at all but buds pro being smaller is better fit.
Sounds quality is much crisper with better bass and better ANC.

not a fan of afterpay, refuse to be forced to create an account with them to buy these. next code thnx…

i paid $320.53 by requesting price match with sony & utilising their 10% off welcome code when you sign up for mysony account, that could be an option for you. i paid with paypal.

      • Worked for me too. Now trying to decide whether to pull the trigger….

I wonder if you can combine a birthday voucher.

        • i am sure you can, afaik it's stackable with welcome voucher.. too bad i don't have one..
also don't forget cashrewards/shopback.. i used cashrewards, hopefully the $20 cashback gets approved.

  • Everything I'm reading on Reddit and elsewhere is to skip these and hang on to your XM4s (or XM3s if the fit works for you)

  • These looks nice but considering you can get the XM4s for around $169 (though refurbished) its $190 saved for something that is fairly similar.

    • Fitting is an issue with xm4 for people and it is big and chunky.

      • Fair but you could buy replacement XM5 earbuds and put them on the 4? Pretty sure they would fit

        • No it is the physical size of the xm4 that is the issue.
