Router Enquiry

I'm aware that the admin can block sites so the you can't visit on your computer. What about your history or sites that you go on. Can the admin see them?

  • You're talking about network admins of universities and workplaces?

Yes, they can monitor your traffic and see what IP addresses you've connected to. With the right software and hardware its easy to trace what you've been browsing. But if you use a VPN with SSL connections, you can easily mask your net traffic.

    Big Brother is watching you.

  • If you join onto a network. You play by their rules. Especially if you're connected to a DET or UNI Network. They keep logs on time's, sites, login pages, cookie history, downloads. Everything you can imagine.

If you're on a private network. Depending on who's it is. You can easily get around any logs with a PROXY.

  • Any suggestions for WIFI Router where to buy the cheapest

  • I was talking about home network, so this is a private network. Could my brother see what I go on and the stuff on my pc?

Also with networks of universities, if I download stuff I think they wouldn't care as other people do it as well

Typically, no. Normal routers don't usually have that kind of feature, but I'm sure with a bit of modding using DD-WRT software a regular home router can be programmed to log IP addresses.

As for universities, they don't monitor traffic all that much since they have a filter and blocklist in place, but they do look out for excessive downloaders and can issue you a warning if they find out. My uni just issued one to students 2 weeks ago.

  • Thanks, that makes make unsure whether what I'm doing is being monitored or not. I'd like a bit of freedom you see? I handed my brother my laptop (PC Windows) to enable wi-fi and that seemed fine to me. But with my Mac laptop, my brother couldn't do that because he "doesn't know how to set it up". Is there a way to find out if my brother has this software, or any kind to see my history, what I go on?

Nah, normally DD-WRT is set up by network geeks :S .
In the off chance he does, a simple hard reset of the router is all it takes to wipe everything off the logs.

  • Interesting…will he know that the router has been reset? Usually when there is something wrong with the internet, I just turn the router off and back on again, would this count as a reset.
n.b. he's pretty good with IT though.

    • No that doesn't could. There is a factory reset switch which will restore the router so stock.

Basically it goes like this: If you are using ANY network then those on the network can monitor you if they are good enough and want to. You have two options:

1: Take the risk that they don't care/aren't good enough.

      2: Use something like Tor.

      Tor will solve your problems.

      • wow thank you so much!!!

        • It is slow though
