Neil is pretty spot-on here. I flew with them MEL-SYD-LAX in November last year. They were pretty decent for the price, but they were old planes so make sure you bring your own entertainment. Flight staff were great, very polite and brought around plenty of meals, water, snacks, etc.
The staff are usually senior because the long haul routes are lucrative and desirable for them therefore allocated on seniority.
The alcohol comes in individual small bottles - ask for a couple to save them a trip back later ;-)
They have their own terminal in LA which will save you some pain in the LA international terminal.
Although there may not be a duty free option that is open for the late departure out of LA.
Their lounge is probably not worth the trouble of trying to access compared with the Qantas lounge.try and upgrade to economy plus, asj at check in and its a very small amount, gives you anxtra 2-3 inches in front which may not sound much but it does make a difference.
I've flowed a few times on United to the US.
The flights that depart from Melbourne in the morning always stop in Sydney. From there they have 1 flight to LAX and 1 to SF. The AUS-US route has traditionally used the old United airplanes (No lay flat seats in business, CRT monitors etc.) Don't expect in seat video. Very ordinary airline but they are good for the price. Just make sure you bring an iPad/tablet to entertain yourself.
