Secondhand Market Upgrades for 5600X + GTX 1070

Hi Ozbargain,

Looking at making some upgrades to my current 5600x + GTX 1070 system via the secondhand market (Likely FB marketplace)

I'm looking at spending $450-$550 for a CPU upgrade and about the same sort of pricing for a secondhand GPU

Currently game at 1080p 144hz with no intention to move to 1440p or higher

Game I mostly play is Battlefield 2042 where I average ~100 fps on the lowest settings

Looking at getting closer to 144 fps on the lowest settings at the same resolution

From what I've gathered doing some research it seems I could be looking at an RTX 3070, 3070 Ti and 2080 Ti as potential gpu upgrades, these seem to be in the $450-$550 price range

Happy to assume I can knock off $50 via negotiating of a given listing

I've yet to look at any secondhand CPU's

Thought I'd come to some experts before diving head first

Thanks heaps in advanced

The CPU should be fine, however if you want to upgrade I would recommend the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D (as anything higher would require a platform change).

I would prioritise the GPU upgrade over the CPU upgrade.

CPU is still perfectly fine. In fact, the only upgrade you can drop in (5800X3D) is basically barren on the used market because most people end up buying it as a last ditch upgrade for AM4, and brand new it cost nearly as much as a full AM5 platform upgrade. The only reason to actually make the upgrade is if you play games like Factorio, or MMO/eSport that are CPU bound.

Use all your budget on the GPU.

    • Thanks might look into just getting a GPU then maybe the 3070 Ti I reckon I can get one around $450 which would last me quite a few more years

I would definitely leave the CPU. Re GPU, for what you've said here, a 1660 would be fine - but think about future games/next BF release

The 1660 isn't any faster than the 1070 OP is already running, a 1660ti might get closer but really a 2060S should be the baseline here. I'd go to a 3070 because there's a chance graphics can run at normal instead of low (although that comes down to what OP thinks of the slowest 1% of frames).

i don't think you need a cpu upgrade, if your fps is stable at 100fps and not spiking between 40fps - 100fps (erratically) then you don't have a cpu issue.

if you struggle to run above 100fps, then it's purely a gpu issue which is likely considering its a gtx1070. there will be a big jump between 1070 and a 3070ti.

FWIW I use a Ryzen 5 5600 and it pairs quite well with a RTX 3070 with no CPU bottleneck

The RTX 3070 goes for around $400 on the used market and the Ti version is around $50 ~ $100 more.

The Ti version is looking pretty attractive to me plan on retiring this PC around when I get to a 5000 series which I'd get second hand too so probably around the time the 7-8000 series or whatever it is at the time is the latest and greatest

Hopefully then some 5800X3D's are on the secondhand market too

Hi mate, I might be interested in purchasing your build. Cheers

    • Not interested in selling but thanks though

well, depends on what you do, are you:

playing 3A games (heavily GPU bound and little to no CPU bound)
playing traditional competitive? (CSGO, Dota, LoL, rocket league, etc) (heavily CPU bound and little to no GPU bound)
playing bigger competitive (CoD or Battlefield) (both CPU and GPU bound)

    or somewhere in-between?

you should prioritize, as in certain scenario, upgrade both may not give you extra benefit than only update 1 out of 2.

  • I just did a 5800x3d with a discount on computer alliance eBay with eBay plus and added it to my 3070 system and I’m getting 150fps capped in 2042 64 player servers. Before that I was getting like 120ish with a lot of stutters.

Keep in mind I play on mostly low and my 3070 is undervolted/overclocked.

With your budget I got my CPU for 480 bucks brand new.

    • From what everyone else is saying I probably don't need to do a CPU upgrade, so I might look to upgrade to the 5800X3D probably late next year or early the year after hopefully by that point they're on the second hand market closer to sub $350 although I might be a bit optimistic

Might focus on the 3070 Ti Upgrade think I can get one for close to $400-$450 via negotiation which should really help my FPS

      Thanks for your input though!

      • Yeah I didn’t even notice ur current CPU/GPU combo so getting a 30 series is a worthy upgrade
