Water Running Sound Coming from Heat Pump Resulting in No Hot Water

Hi,

I have a heat pump that won't go past 27°C.
There is noise that resembles water running coming from the heat pump. This sound wasn't there before.
Anyone know what the issue could be?
The model is Chromagen Midea 170L.
Thanks

    Chromagen Midea

This is your problem. These are shit. That's why the Victorian government gives them away for free.

  • Why not simply ring the manufacturer - I am sure they will provide a better answer than OZB

    • i didn't even think of that. 😅. ringing them now

"i didn't even think of that"

        Another sticky for the mods

  • Safety valve stuck open?

    • is that the a PTR valve?

      • +1

        Yes.
The thing that stops the tank from exploding as the water heats up and expands.

        • checked it and water is running freely. cold water sadly

          • @follow: It shouldn't be running at all.
If it's flowing freely, your tank is draining faster than it can heat up, hence why it's cold. You electricity and water bill is going to be sky high if it's been like this for more than a few hours.

Try operating it manually a few times, by lifting the lever.
If that doesn't work, give it a tap with a hammer to hopefully free it up.
If that doesn't work, turn off the inlet water and call a plumber.

Probably should call a plumber anyway. the valve shouldn't stick open ever, so it's faulty even if you can get it closed in the short term.

            • @ESEMCE: sorry i meant when i release it, it runs freely

  • Compressor failure? Gas leak?

    • guess I'll just call a plumber 😭

      • Screen shot this thread. Look for a hot neighbour. Scrounge a shower. Leave your mobile number.

What did the manufacturer ACTUALLY say? Ring a plumber?

        • Send them an email of the sound. Change the mode from economy to hybrid.

          • @follow: If that didn't help, ring another maker (do research first) and order a new one (shop around)

It could be a leaking water pipe somewhere either up or downstream from the hot water unit. A downstream leak could explain the water running noise, as well as the low temperature as the water doesn't have enough time to heat up before it gets cycled through the tank. Just like what would happen if one leaves a hot water tap on somewhere and drains the tank.

Not to ask a dumb question, but have you tried turning off water to the heat pump and / or your house?
Check if the noise stops, or reduced in anyway. And take readings of your water meter at regular intervals (hourly, daily etc) incase there is an absurd amount of water being used, which would indicate a leak.

    • I turned off the tap to the house and the house but was still hearing it. Thought it was because there's still water in the tank.
Would you recommend turning off the water and run the taps until it's empty?

      • This response has made me concur. Ring a plumber. Before something worse happens

      • Could possibly be water in the tank, but without mains pressure pushing water through, the noise should have stopped or at the very least reduced.

As others have suggested. Time to call a plumber!

        • i tried it again this time,

water off at mains. sound stopped.
water off at heat pump. sound still there. no drop in sound level

i take it this could mean a leak somewhere in the house?

@follow: Could very well be a leak somewhere in the house. If you can hear it from the Hot Water Unit, it means its should be very close.

Should probably leave the mains water off unless you absolutely need it. We had a very similar issue recently where a burst pipe was discharging from 6 up to 20 Kli's a day and resulted in a very nasty water bill. Funnily enough…it was right next to a HWU too.

Get a plumber asap! If it is a burst pipe, they'll patch it. Worst case, a decent chunk of the piping is getting old and will need replacing.

            • @Gnilgorf: you were right. it was the pipe right under the heat pump.
plumber came, put his hand under the pump where it looked like there was flowing water and stopped the leak. then patched it up.

          • @follow: Is there a gutter down-pipe anywhere near the unit, or a floor drain?

            • @Protractor: yes, gutter downpipe

              • @follow: So if no HWS solar panels on the roof, is that near where the PTR is discharging?
Or does it just go onto ground?

  • "Not to ask a dumb question"
Don't be silly. That's reserved for all new forum topics

Has it got heating (solar) panels on the roof as part of the system? Those systems are well known for frost valves breaking on the roof in winter. I replaced my Chromagen builders system with a Rinnai within 3 years as I got sick of the ongoing repairs despite being covered by warranty.

    • no solar panels specifically for the heat pump
had it for 5 years without issue
      hopefully an easy fix

plumber came and was able to fix it.
nothing was wrong with the heat pump, the pipe under was leaking.
    cost $200 😢

Glad it all got sorted out asap!

Hopefully you caught it early enough that there wasnt too much water lost. Brace urself for a higher water bill though.

thats very good outcome and reasonable cost.
