Pork Belly $12/kg @ Woolworths

3160

hasn't been this price for a long long time. Also just yesterday I purchased some pork belly at Costco for ~$20

For those wanting to make crispy pork belly in the oven, I use a combination of the methods described in these two videos

1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKeztAkKw2Y
2. https://youtu.be/NMORs2KR1zE?t=390

  1. season meaty part with 5 spice, salt and pepper, wrap bottom part in foil, dry skin in fridge for ~4 days or until it hardens as described in video 1
  2. Then oven time and temp as per video 2
  3. 5-10 minutes using the grill function monitoring closely

    Thanks Ozrecipe

      the most non-inclusive food ever

      Also the tastiest

      • +3

I prefer pork loin. Cooked in a bath for 15 hours with herbs. Then sliced on rye bread.

        • +9

I don't usually spend that long in the bath. Should I just leave the plug (and pork) in when I get out?

        • +2

I prefer, a single plum, floating in perfume, served in a man's hat.

    • +35

Not very inclusive to ignore that this is non kosher too

      • not kosher, not halal …. it won’t kill you to eat it,

@noskich Best comment of the day :)

      • yaa but people seem offended by that comment

        • -1

@noskich That is fantastic -253!! Best score ever :) I would be proud of that. It shows you are free of the brain washing that has somehow happened to a large percentage of our population and they have forgotten how to take a joke. It is like that movie, Invasion of the Body snatchers, has become reality. Maybe aliens are really here and this is how they enslave humans.

    • +50

yeah but its gluten free and doesn't contain peanuts

    • +14

I spread breadcrumbs, mixed nuts and traces of shellfish on it too. The one food to spite them all.

    • +6

      @noskich

Well, I was already keen on it, but you just sold it to me… Thanks

    • +2

Haha. Thanks for the belly giggles!

    • +2

      This is Haram bae

    • +1

Irks me seeing so many people falling for obvious satire

      • +1

No, they were serious. It's a theme

        • I believe that's further trolling

          • +1

            @SpainKing: It's a theme.
Either that, or they only troll for animal derived products.

            • -2

@youknow: It can be a theme and still be trolling. Everyone knows vegans, governmental policy, at-fault car accidents and trans people are what rile up OzBargain the most

            • +4

@youknow: I've changed my mind after delving further in to their post history. I think you might be right but I can't understand how someone would legitimately think and communicate like that

    • +6

You don't win friends with salad.

    • +9

Thought this was a joke until I checked the post history. Sad.

    • -1

Got to hand it to em… They have created a religion to keep Pork Crackle all to themselves..well done!

    • +5

      No one cares about vegans.

    • +2

      • +2

    • -2

Tell your people to stop selling drugs and killing people in australia before having an opinon. 🤷‍♂️

      • +2

What are you talking about mate? Who's "your people"?

        • +2

The vegans, the vegetarians and the pork belly halals obviously.

    • Not pesca-pescatarian either, for shame.

    • -1

Yum I love them haram food so much

    • +1

i bathe myself in beef tallow

    • +2

Is this a record number of downvotes?

    • Pork isn't woke! Yay

    • +3

No, please elaborate. Why the hell do you get to "shame" other people for their choice of food.

Why is your beliefs system or religion somehow better or more correct than someone elses?

What the hell even is an "inclusive" food?

Actually have the courage to stand by your insane statement and logically explain why you're not being a bigot yourself in telling other people what they can or cannot say/do.

      • Sir you're getting upset over someone that wasn't serious in the first place

        • Look at their post history, they point out when shoes etc are not vegan.

          • +1

@brendanm: Perhaps they regularly do it to troll and know what's most effective. People on vegan posts do the same thing all the time

            • +1

@SpainKing: Have a look for yourself. I also assumed they were trolling, but seems they are just deranged.

              • +1

@brendanm: I had a look and I've changed my mind, they have some strong views

      • +1

Don't fall for the bait, just neg and move on lol

    • Looks like the vegan teacher has competition

    • What a moron. Mind your business freak

    • just shut up and put it in your mouth.

      • +1

NO haram (harm) in a bone mate!

        Now a boner, that's a different issue.

    • chicken for cocks?

    • Lamb for the sheep?

  • +11

    Other way can be.

Put it on cooling rack or something.
    Pour boiling water on top.

Pat dry. Leave in the fridge over night.

    Next day.
Season it, Salt and oil on skin side. blast the oven at the highest temp or around 220 degrees. Cook it until skin is crispy. Should happen within an hour.
After skin is crispy, turn down the temp to 160 170 and keep cooking for another an hour or so.

All depends on the size of the Pork belly though

    • Can you use air fryer to speed up the cooking?

      • you should be getting similar result on air fryer as well. Dont forget to check it in between

      • +1

AF also great for re-heating them. Turn into pork belly 'bites' and away you go with a little extra salt on them.

      • +2

IMO this is the best way. David Ong (from the first video) has a great method. He's a BBQ master guy, but would basically now say you can't beat the airfryer.
Basically, the secret is just to leave opened in your fridge for 2-3 days to dry out the skin

  • Time for some vegemite pork crackle.

    • +8

I will report you if you do that…

      • Your wife would enjoy the less belly fat.

  • +6

+1 for the recipe and tips.

  • OOS almost everywhere

Also, IGA usually have these under $10/kg (~$8 from my last 2 visits from memory) with less freshness and thicker skin from the look

    • Plenty of stock at my local this afternoon, more than they usually have at full price. They were in smaller packs (~800g) than usual (1.2-1.5kg) too.

    • +1

You could possibly ask for a rain check. I have never done it for a product like meat though. I can only hope that they just generically say that you get to buy a pork belly for $12 per kg.

      • I thought all supermarkets stop doing rainchecks

        • Woolworths stopped early Covid era.

Coles still do selective rainchecks, I think the item must be advertised in the catalogue.

          • @JayParker: they wouldn't let people return expired pork on the same day purchased

            • +1

@Poor Ass: I once returned an expired whole chicken to Woolies a week after I had purchased it. The receipt showed the date of purchase and the date on the chicken showed it had expired the day before. The girl wanted to know why I had not returned it on the day of purchase. I told her I did not have 20 minutes to travel to the store each way with 2 kids to remedy their mistake. Anyway got my money back as you should have. Luckily the chicken was well sealed. Pretty sure against the law for them to sell expired food. Just needed to say you would report them.

              • +1

                @Yola: ya that's good

sometimes you buy meat and even not expired it already gone off when you open it and it's nothing to do with how you store it just sometimes there's a bad batch…. i mean they can't really question this stuff and just need to accept it

imaging it was gone and you cooked it and then smelled awful…. you would need to bring the cooked meat back in the store if you want that refund

            • @Poor Ass: Was this meant to be a reply to my comment? I don’t see what returning expired food has to do with getting a raincheck.

  • anyone got tits on the pork belly? how does it taste?

    • +1

tits taste amazing (apparently, heard it from a friend)

      • Better than pennies?

        • +1

I haven’t tasted but you can try and let me know.

    • Tits over pork belly, anyday!

  • +4
  • +5

Sometimes you get the boar taint smell and taste in these supermarket pre packaged ones. A bit of a gamble if you get it or not

  • Eat PORK BELLY to get beer belly. Go figure!
