Best Cloud Storage Option

Similar to this post I’m looking for a cloud storage option for our family. The things that I’d like to do are:

  • Backup 2 Macs (not much data as most on Google Drive)
  • Backup 4 iPhones
  • Bonus if we could store files (mainly movies and TV shows) from our hard drive

I was thinking Google One but no idea how much data to choose and then over time I’m worried the price will keep going up, the more data we need.

I like the plan on Blackblaze but I’m not sure if it’s a suitable option? Like can I view or download (if needed for applications to send to a friend etc) photos/files on their app?

iCloud is what makes the most sense for you. Maybe not as feature-rich as other options but will be seamless with your devices. Provided 2TB is sufficient.

    • Oh yeah didn’t even think of that and I’m sure 2TB would be enough, but what happens when you exceed?

Had another look just now and $43 per month seems excessive. Would I be able to move my photos from Google Photos to iCloud?

      • You could start an Apple family plan to lower the costs, though it's 2TB divided by all six of you, not 2TB each. But plenty of people will join the plan just for Apple Music alone.

      • 2 TB is $14.99. Not sure where you got $43 from. Maybe the added item bundles.

You can export photos via https://takeout.google.com

        • They're looking at Premier One.

OP, iCloud isn't a backup for your Macs. It is for your phones. iCloud only does your Documents and Desktop folder on your Mac if you enable it.

Paying for iCloud storage is essential for keeping your photo library in sync as well. Everyone complains about how it should be free but you get a lot for the price.

As for your media and Macs, you can put it on your documents folder. And then use a local Time Machine backup for the whole Mac. Backblaze is a good option if you have a lot to backup.

          • @ozbargainsam: Oh yes sorry I looked at the wrong one that’s good to know. Wouldn’t it be better to go the 2TB one on Google which works out to be $10.42 per month? Especially as we already have lots of photos and videos on Google Photos up until the unlimited storage ended.

            • @bobwokeup: Ah right. If your stuff is on Google then yes, go with more storage on Google.

You'll still want a nominal amount to backup your Apple devices, try 50GB then step up to 200GB if needed.

              • @ozbargainsam: Cool cheers. I’m not too worried about the Apple backups as long as we can save our photos. Documents are already on Google Drive too.

  • I currently split apple one with some other ozbargain members. I highly recommend if you’re in the ecosystem

    • Cheers great idea but a max of 5 members and we’d take up 4 of them so would be hard to find just one person, I’d imagine?

      • Not hard. Find someone, get them to pay you $83 a year or whatever. Tell them they can have 100GB of the storage or whatever.

A flight to Turkey or India will give best value on google or one drive. Suits most use cases.

  • Office 365 license. 6 users with 1TB storage each, $105 a year from here - https://www.saveonit.com.au/product/microsoft-office-365-fam…

I'd just create an extra account as a "media" one. Plus everyone gets an Office license that way (or Microsoft 365 as it's apparently called now). Easy to backup all your photos and videos from an iPhone to it then just use the free 5GB for the basic backup.

    • This could work, we all have Google accounts, would we have to create outlook account? Getting an office license is also a huge bonus.

Isn’t it 1TB each so I could just copy photos/videos to OneDrive?

      • Nah, no need for an outlook account. When you do the family setup you just send the requests to their gmail account and it creates the accounts, you log in with your gmail account as the username and create a password which logs into office, onedrive, etc.

And yes, it's 1TB each, so a good chunk of storage. But because I only use 3 accounts for family, I setup some fake accounts to use for media storage, because I ran out of space in mine.

        • Ah sweet cheers. Yeah that’ll work really well actually. We’ve got some joint outlook accounts that we use too so can use that as the extra accounts.

  • Your cheapest option is getting a router/modem connected to a USB hard disk heck even like 32 gb flash drive would work too BUT NAS HDD of around 2-8 tb are preferred as they are designed to be on 24/7.
and use that to store data, use something like FTP, or SFTP, via Samba.
So this should be LIFETIME cost until one of your devices or software fails, (most likely your locally attached USB storage would fail after a long long time)

Note - this is like a NAS (network attached drive) but just that it will be only on your LAN (only your wifi/Ethernet network). Nevertheless all devices attached to your modem should be able to access it directly now with FTP etc. (assuming you select appropriate settings on your modem).

To get faster speeds you might want to connect device via ethernet. (because WIFI is slow). ethernet speeds should be around 50-100 MBps (not 50-100 Mbps). WIfi speeds can be from 5-40 MBps (very slow especially if you are not in the same room as router).

Also if you need to backup stuff to cloud (lets say you got one drive subscription 1TB) At home, you can link FTP to that cloud account to directly sync. I use foldersync for this. Just chuck a android phone with that app setup. No need to buy expensive stuff like Build PC, or raspberry pi or NAS devices (unless you need like RAID 1 stuff etc)
