Consideration of MSI Graphic cards

I have a custom build PC that’s pretty much all MSI except the Corsair ram and Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler

So I want to get a MSI graphic card, I do have MSI riser and pcie 4.0 cable for shows if needed, but just can’t decide on a 4070 ti Suprim for $1350 , or a 4080 at $1500-1700 (2nd hand, couple to few months old)

Understanding 4080 is superior in many ways to 4070ti, but just need to control the budget, my thinking was if I get highest tier 4070 ti, it would minimise the gap to 4080 ventus model?

Should I just get the 4080 even if it’s lower tier from MSI? Or should get 4070 ti Suprim high end, and that’s $300-$450 less!!

Thanks and Thoughts please

The only difference with the lower end vs higher end is the cooling solutions - which sometimes means they can boost the clock speeds higher but you’re talking 1% - 2% performance increase at most. But the chipset is exactly the same.

If you’re budget conscious I’d recommend going a “low end” MSI 4070ti, but personally I’d spend the extra and get the 4080.

    • Thanks for the info mate, if only talking about 1-2% performance increase but have to suffer from the higher wear and tear, its just not worth it.

Always go for the cheaper higher tier card. Companies are releasing absurd products like the Asus 4060 Ti Strix for MORE than the price of the 4070 despite being up to 30% slower to try to convince people that the fact it's the "best" 4060 Ti makes a difference. Factory OC has become a complete joke with the difference often being around 50 MHz between models. At the end of the day you are paying primarily for the silicon from Nvidia (the same from every manufacturer/brand), the PCB and components from the AIB (some variation) and the cooling system (most variation between manufacturer/brands). There are very few circumstances where having a better cooling solution is better than having the next tier up in silicon. I'd take my chances with the cheapest 4080 and replace the fans if they fail.

    • Thanks mate, this is really helpful, so it simply just a better thermal solutions, the actual product and performance is the same, that said, 4080 is simply better than 4070 ti regardless the "tier" within its kind

Sounds like its probably okay to get PNY/Zotac as I watched some videos that Zotact cards are great in thermal controls

      • That's right. Like jk82 mentioned, also consider a lower end 4070 Ti if you find the price of the 4080 to be too rough, but getting a high end 4070 Ti like you asked about in the original post is not something I'd recommend. Either save the money or go a tier up.

You can literally grab a msi 4080 ventus for $1809

Why not go brand new if thats what you want?

Or go an xtx over the 4070 if budget is a thing, even in ray tracing the xtx is only marginally behind a 407ti. About 1fps at 4k.

Goodluck with whatever you choose though, been struggling with the same sort questions the last month.

I had 7900xt TUF, sold just recently because of the card kept constantly high power (2 monitors) at around 65w - 100w, and keeping my cpu 100% when nothing is running, and can’t see anything running at task manager. I say it’s the GpU causing the issues because as soon as I put my backup GPU (GTX760) on, my cpu usage dropped to 0-5% only when at same scenario that nothing is running

      So weird

        Bad timing: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-2…

"Improvements to high idle power when using select 4k@144Hz FreeSync enabled displays or multimonitor display configurations (such as 4k@144HZ or 4k@120Hz + 1440p@60Hz display) using on Radeon™ RX 7000 series GPUs."

      • Yeah, as xxBARGAINGODxx mentioned that was a driver/software issue and has been corrected.
No longer an issue that should impact your choice any more than the overheating 3080's, and cable melting 4080/90's should.

Well the cable melting is a bit more serious I suppose. But the idea is there. Just giving you advice for maximum value, if you want a 4080 thats fine, but a 4070 ti vs an xtx for around the same price? The xtx bodies it in raster, barely loses in ray tracing and has more bandwidth, vram, just more gpu.

Sucks about your xt, but things are alot different now than at launch. Best of luck with whatever card you choose.

oh yeah I saw that driver update and I had that updated before I sold my card, and I can tell you, it wasnt fixed, my 4k 60hz and Ultra wide 144hz still flickers, only solution is to lower the ultra wide 144hz to 120hz, so it stopped flickering.
and AV1 decoding is also not working properly, it pauses whenever I play the video, insanly my GT760 can actually play AV1 videos…

          • @wildecho: Damn if thats right, I woulda demanded a full refund not just sell it off.

But yeah fair enough bad experience like that cant blame ya for steering clear.

  • MSI and GIGABYTE have the worst reputations, that said I bought a gigabyte based on price

    • I had Gigabyte 3080 ti, the white aero version, it was "HOT" under load in games like COD, around 85 plus!! i will never buy the high end GPU from Gigabyte for sure….
