Why is white cheaper? Where's the equality?

    • +15

its cheaper because its slower than the black version

      • -3

white version is useless, the black version always has better value for money

      • +3

        White Router can't route

      • +11

put jokes aside, both black and white version of this router have the same performance.

        • -2

          Speaking from Experience?

      • +1

Except when you put it in water

    • +4

Once you go black, you never go back…

      • Always bet on black

      • speaking from experience I see?

    • +3

You should see the dongle… the wifi says it's huge

      • But, the white one’s manual says size doesn’t matter?

        • +1

White one has WiFi6 and the Black one has WiFi10

  • can you still use the older WiFi 5 asus routers with these for mesh and have this plugged into nbn modem?

    • +1

depends on your wifi 5 model, some can but some can't,
Google "asus aimesh models" and you will find a list on asus website.

but asus has stopped firmware update or security support on many old wifi 5 models,
so for security reasons, better just get 1 of this and replace your wifi 5.
it's just $99 anyway, future proof for the next 5 years.

    • +2

If it has AiMesh then yes

  • What's the difference between this and the RT-AX56U that went on sale for $99 a few months ago? It's currently $139 on amazon. Wondering if it's worth the extra $40.

      • Ledge

      • +1

Thanks for that. Seems like the review says it's worth the extra to go for the AX56U.

    • Wondering the same

    • As someone who has had both - I had the ax3000 which I think is the same as the 56. (My ax3000 died after 2.5 years due to flatmates throwing grease all over it). The ax3000 was a lot better. This one isn't bad, but it is def a bit slower with multiple devices. Sometimes when I turn devices on they take a sec to connect.

I kinda wish I had spent a bit more money for a better one. Still miles better than some shitty one the isps give you for free though.

  • I am lost. I googled this model. Nothing says this can be a modem. Does this mean I still cannot replace my Telatra nbn modem with this Asus model?
    Sorry for the newb question.

    • +2

It's not a modem. It's a router only. If you have NBN, then you should already have the modem.

      • +4

        Unless you have FTTN.

        • Noob question but if you have FTTN then you just have the one plug from port to the router (like this deal) and just use that So bypasses the NBN modem?

          • +1

@prankster: You can plug an ethernet cable into the LAN port on the modem, then the other end into the WAN port of the router. Turn off the WiFi on the modem. If you want to get fancy you might think about putting the modem into "bridge mode", but for most people it's absolutely not necessary.

            Edit:

            1. You probably need to make sure that the IP subnet address on the modem and router are different to prevent any problems. Fair example if the modem has the base ip 192.168.1.1 (ie, it hands out IP addresses on the 192.168.1.x subnet to devices connected to it via DHCP), you might want to set the base ip if the router to 192.168.2.1 so then all devices connected to the router will be on that subnet and receive their IP addresses (192.168.2.x) from the router via DHCP.

            2. If you plug in to the LAN port on the router, that will bypass any firewall function on the router, so best not to. It will probably also mean that both the modem and the router will try to respond to DHCP requests, which will cause issues, unless you put the modem into bridge mode.

        • You should be able to configure the asus router for vlan over wan in iptv settings, thus bypassing the isp modem

      • According to my ISP it's a modem router.

  • If I have an ax88u
Should my mesh be the same router

    • no, it doesnt need to be the same
AX55 is a perfect candidate as a mesh node
I am also using a AX88U as primary, with mesh nodes of AX55 and AX56U

      • Thanks

  • +1 can vouch for this router. Have been using this one for ages. I'm not particularly techy and was able to mesh it with my old Asus router in seconds. Also easily connects to my VPN provider at the router level.

    • Did you just mesh to get wider coverage in your house?

Silly question but generally routers these days has good coverage to cover at least the whole house nowadays right? Unless it’s trying to get coverage from the front of house where the router is to the back of the house if the signal needs to be boosted?

      • No, I only meshed cos I had a spare router.

  • Definitely Recommend this also works really well. Replaced or old iiNet router and has been a solid workhorse since

  • -1

The AX56U and inevitably this AX55 (given the incredibly close specifications) have reached end-of-life, hence the fire sale prices. Don't expect many (if any) more firmware/security updates, official or Merlin.

    • +2

      No it's not.
It's under "Recommended models" on asus list, recommended as a replacement of EOL models on the left hand side.
Asus generally supports a model for 5-7 years.
      AX55 is a 2020 model.

      • +1

The AX56U (FCC certified in 2019) is undoubtedly on the aforementioned list, has almost identical specs (apart from variation of flash and ram size only) and the AX55 (FCC certified in 2020) has a deeper price reduction. That's the evidence at hand, I'm just laying it out there.

  • Thinking of these 2 to create mesh or just one ax56u. Any suggestions?

  • I have FTTN and an old Netcom modem/router that get a no updates. Would I get better wifi range and security if I used this with the old modem until FTTP gets rolled our to my area next year?

    • Messy set-up. I'd buy a used decent netcomm modem in the short term

    • +1

I'd just wait until FTTP is rolled out and then buy something appropriate then (probably cheaper and better than available now) unless you have a wifi blackspot on your premises that is really annoying you

  • Tempted to buy this just because it's a good deal. Currently using a Telstra Gen 2 modem for my internet + wifi. I'm in a 1 bedroom apartment and I don't know if I can really justify getting this 😂. Does the Gen 2 have a poor reputation for routing? I'm using the technicolor and only just got it.

    • +1

No need to upgrade from gen 2 to this , not for a one br apartment
I had gen 2 when I lived in a townhouse and it worked fine everywhere

  • Wonder if this is a replacement for my old Netgear R7000 the Wi-Fi has seriously gone down hill on it, no idea why… annoying to constantly reboot it. Might have to go back on some firmware.

  • I've got the TP-link arecher AX55 and just seems not reliable with multiple users. FTTP and a decent ISP (ABB) i do get ~ 106Mbps on speedtest but i feel that i have to reset the router daily to get a reliable signal. Do you think that this will be a better reliable replacement?

  • Would 3 of these work as well as something like TP-Link Deco X68(3-Pack) as a MESH setup?

  • Is it a gigabit WAN port? because I have a FTTP 1gb internet connection now that i upgraded to.

  • Seems to be $199 when I add it to cart. Anyone else? Wondering if it was a price error they've corrected

    • white ones all gone. black ones are $20 extra.

  • Is this better than the ASUS RT-AC86U?

  • +1

The deal is gone, price is back to 199$

  • I have the TP-Link AC2100 Modem Router. Can I use this ASUS RT-AX55 as an extender?

    • you can use the bridge mode to set a different brand router as an extender, but it wouldn't be as fast as mesh mode if you get another tp-link router with OneMesh

      • Yep, thanks @cmd1106 I'll stick with your advice and hodl for another tp-link with OneMesh.

  • Back in stock

  • does it support 4.G backup ?

  • Missed it again. OOS.
