Buying QLD Car Living in NSW

Hi folks,

Buying a car with QLD registration and will be taking it back down to NSW with me.

I know there are a few ways to go about sorting the rego, transferring the vehicle back down etc.

I’m due to go on a trip in a weeks time where I will need rego sorted, trying to get a uvp and then booked for a blue slip might be pushing it for time.

I have family with a QLD address, Is it possible for me to use their address and just transfer the QLD registration to my name via that address?
I don’t hold a Qld drivers licence either, have a Nsw licence, would that be an issue?

Said QLD address is not the address on my licence either.

Just looking for the easiest way to go about it.

Not looking to keep it on QLD plates forever, just buy enough time to get the trip away done.

Cheers for any and all answers

How long rego left on the car? You have 3 months to transfer to NSW plates

    • You have 3 months to transfer the rego, but you only have to transfer it if “the vehicle is kept or garaged in NSW”.
If you’re going on holidays, you might argue that the car won’t start being “kept or garaged” in NSW until after you get back from holidays, so the 3 months would start from then?

  • I have family with a QLD address/might be pushing it for time

Get them to "buy" the car. Sort out the details after the trip.

    • don't forget stamp duty everytime a vehicle changes ownership, plus costs of another RWC

  • Nearly 8 months rego left.

If I had them “buy” the car would they need to attend Service NSW to eventually do the change over?
Also, would I be in for 2 lots of stamp duty then?

  • I bought a QLD Hilux for a NSW mate as a favour without too much trouble a couple of years ago. He sent a letter, copy of ID, and seller was happy with that to write the rego transfer info in his name. My mate transferred the money to my account, and I withdrew it as cash from the bank for purchase. Seller and I may have even done an electronic submission for rego transfer out of his name on collect, so my mate was on file to pay stamp duty.

Next day I took it to Currumbin TMR, paid stamp duty, then cancelled rego and surrendered plates to get QLD rego refund, and paid I recall around $28 for a 24hr permit to drive it over the border to Tweed Heads for blue slip and NSW plates. NSW roads at Tweed Heads registered it in my mates name without issues using his details on form, ID, and letter.

If your family can do paragraph 1 and seller is comfortable, then you do paragraph 2 a few weeks later, it may be viable and all legal too. A few calls could give you latest info.

If the car is registered in QLD, buy the car in your name (it doesnt matter that you have a NSW license).
Drive it to NSW. Get a blue slip.
Complete the Service NSW "Application for Registration" form.
Purchase a CTP (Green Slip) without the registration number listed (known as an Original Registration).
Go to a Service NSW Centre, hand over the QLD plates and get NSW plates

    • If it’s bought in my name, with no qld address to transfer, That would mean the owner would have to or want to deregister it before I take off it with it no?

      • Not really. All they do is declare they sold it to you on the date of the sale, and advise QLD transport with your buyers details. Its then up to you to register it in QLD, if you dont within 14 days they will cancel the rego so you will now have an unregistered car.

Eg. You could have just moved to QLD and buying a car, its not the sellers responsibility to determine that. They have sighted your identity docs and advised Qld of the transfer. Of course you cant register it in QLD unless you live there, but thats not the sellers role to resolve.

But then you will have registered it in NSW so thats ok.

You will need some documents to prove your purchase. Read this

    https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/vehicle…

My niece had issues registering a QLD car in NSW which my brother owned. They wouldnt accept the QLD signed transfer. They required a proof of registration entitlement document.

    That includes

    Proof of purchase

An original letter, bill of sale, receipt or tax invoice that includes:
    seller’s name, address and signature
buyer’s name, address and signature (not required for small trailers bought from retail outlets)
    date the vehicle was sold
selling price or market value of the vehicle (whichever is higher)
    vehicle registration and VIN/Chassis numbers.

Again they would NOT accept a QLD rego papers signed over. Even though if I recall right it had all the same stuff as the above proof of purchase.

In our case as she obviously had easy contact with the seller she could go back and get that although it involved express postage of the correct details. Much harder when you have paid the money to someone who doesnt have skin in the game (relative)

Now some people said that the Service NSW office was wrong and that might be the case, but they wouldnt budge. Play safe get this paper as well

Here is an example of what they accepted

    Receipt of Purchase

    Vehicle:
    Make _______ _______________________________
    Model ________________________________________
    Year __________________________________________
    VIN/Chassis/Serial _______________
    Engine Number _________________________
    Plate Number _______________________________
    Sale Details:
    Sale Price/Market Value _______________________
    Sale Date _______________________________
    Buyer's Details:
    Name ______________________________________________
    Licence Number ____________________________________
    Signature __________________________________________
    Seller's Details
    Name _______________________
    Address _____________
    Licence Number ____________________________
    Signature ________________________________________

  • Such a pain in the ass, surely they can come up with consistent rules and make it easier for interstate sale. Such an inefficient way of doing things.

  • Update -

Any issues with me using parent in laws qld address to put on the sale papers/ change of ownership?

I will then have 14 days to transfer rego to me in NSW right?

Seller in qld is happy to keep the qld rego active until I change over in nsw…

Just checking using the Queensland address won’t come back to bite me somehow as I have no paperwork in my name there …

    • You may require a Qld drivers license to transfer it to your name. A Qld drivers license requires a Qld address.

How old it the car, does it realistically need anything for a blue slip? Lead time on most blue slip places is like 1 or 2 days and then you just go directly to Service NSW with your blue slip, green slip and a rego transfer form. It really should only take a day to get a car registered.

If it needs shit for a blue slip, then that is a good indication that you probably shouldn’t be driving it on your holiday until it is roadworthy.

      • Tried multiple garages near me and looking 10-14 days to get booked in for a blue slip inspection. It’s a joke around the northern rivers area.
Realistically shouldn’t need anything done no, major service just completed and all was good.

So yeah, that would leave me up shit creek with no car in time for the trip.
Current car is having engine trouble and randomly knocking out on the highway at speeds over 100kmh, mechanics can’t figure out why. Very dangerous with kids in the car, almost been truck bait a few times now.
Hence the purchase of the new car!

        • Realistically shouldn’t need anything done no, major service just completed and all was good.

          Something will need doing.

  • Curious what the car in question is..and why a private Interstate sale is better value than locally sourced vehicle?

    • It’s a jeep wrangler. If I could have found a NSW registered one I would, but would have involved flying down to Sydney realistically and driving back, and not a good time right now to do so for me!

I literally live on the border of NSW / QLD , h
Gold Coast had far more options than northern NSW
