  • i too would like to ditch my gas cooktop as it has its own issues… 2 out of 5 hobs are already failing many times and I was thinking of upgrading to Induction…

      This needs a 32 amp feed so the best place is with a sparky then look at the cabinetry and the ventilation as these require some sort of ventilation as the cooktops underneath get extremely hot .

        what about the existing gas connection to the back of the current stove?

        i have been told that no ordinary sparky can service stoves if it has gas on it due to regulation. i assume i will need to get someone that knows gas to even remove the current gas stove?

          You need to look for a gas fitter but often they do both water and gas.

                      I don't care about the specific brand as long as what I'm buying is of good and comparable quality and I can still save more money.
                      BTW, this merchant's return policy is so vague so I would feel much safer by dealing with AppliancesOnline which explain well what are their conditions of Ikea, and why not, the cooktops from Aldi are top quality too!

          I converted from gas to induction. You need a plumber to disconnect the old cooktop and a sparky to run a new line from the board for the induction cooktop. It was a service call for the plumber and a couple of hours for the sparky.

          • @wombat_58: Do you prefer the induction vs gas (comparison on the cooking experience and then the appliances provided they were life-for-like new) ?

            • @nonpop: The induction cooktop does a great job, we already had compatible cookware so all good. I am no gourmet and notice no difference between gas or induction except for the gas bills.

              I prefer the look of the induction cooktop over the gas hobs but personal preference.

              Ours is a 90cm Electrolux, very happy.

      • You don't always need 32amp, you can get away with 20amp, I believe my 4 burner Smeg is on that. You may not need a plumber - we found our gas cooker was connected with a bayonet (like for a gas heater,), just detach and lift out. thanks for removing one more dirty gas appliance from the fossil fuel wagon.

            • @Kammi: It's the fuse size at the main switch board for that circuit, alot of sparkies will want to run a seperate fuse to only the cooktop, I would say that the cooktop you have is on the same one as the oven?

        Frankly sick of this discouragement of gas energy, which iswas cheap and relatively clean. Everyone in Australia should be benefiting from our natural gas reserves, but instead we get screwed over by our politicians (and dare I say, ideologues obsessed with climate change).

          Problem is that gas and associated emissions still leak into your home when the burners are switched off.

          Pretty sure it was the gas companies who decided to export all the fracked gas they ripped up rural communities and waterways to dig up, not politicians, but whatever.

          Also dare you walk through any bushfire or flood affected community and tell them extreme weather isn't a problem. I'm sure Lismore, Cobargo, much of the Blue Mountains, Collaroy etc etc would appreciate your fine judgement

          Yanno we can burn gas outside our homes to produce electricity and then transport that electricity inside of our homes for our induction cooktops so we don't burn greenhouse gases inside the house.
          In fact in my state most electricity is generated by natural gas.

          Your issue has nothing to do with gas cooktops, which consume a minute proportion of the gas produced in Australia yet have serious health implications for those living in houses where gas is burned.

      Gas stoves are not dissimilar to an unflued gas heater, all of the combustion by-products remain in the house unless you increase ventilation (externally vented rangehood, open a window etc.) However an open question was whether or not the quantity of gas being burned and the quality of the combustion actually cause harm. Now there’s increasing evidence that the decrease in air quality associated with gas stoves is measurably bad for health, hence the push to reduce gas cooking

      There are definitely studies linking burning gas on stove to childhood asthma (of course you need to do , haven't seen many other complaints about induction, apart from people complaining about cooking with a wok. I'm about to change to induction, what danger?

      • No danger, that I've ever heard of. You won't look back. there's a myth about pacemakers but that's been sorted now. Check your pot bottoms with a magnet, to check if you need some new pans. If so, keep a magnet in your bag but most have a symbol now.

    I have an IKEA cooktop and it’s been pretty solid. Used the SMAKLIG until my wife dropped a cast iron pan on the edge and cracked it. Replaced with another IKEA induction cooker (the cooktop, not the wife). Can’t remember the name but was just under $400 and has also been working well. 5 year warranty too. IIRC they use a rebadged Whirlpool induction cooker for the SMAKLIG.

    If this has auto shut off spill detection, do not buy. Washing yours hands before cooking, or during, then turning on the stove will shut it down for a few mins. Nothing worse than a mid cook shut down. Ruined so many steaks etc with my Whirlpool/ Electrolux …POS. The real kicker is that rice Will boil over and it won't shut down

    • Now stopping boil overs is a good thing! Yes, they can be sensitive to being wet but it hardly will ruin a steak. Wipe it down and keep going. It def doesn't stop for a few minutes, just a few seconds. Bonus feature is that you can wipe over your cooktop while you cook. Less cleanup

      • Nah, not with mine. If you wipe it down in anyway it will trigger the cutoff (which is a real pain as I like to wipe up spatter as I clean).

        As per the manual, the cutoff state will remain for a minium of 2 mins, or until all traces of moisture are removed (and i mean "all".. Wiping down with a tea towel still leaves a smear it isnt happy with). Even drying your hands with a tea towel, then touching the controls will trigger it.

        So by then the steak pan loses its high heat and starts to stew the meat…and there is nothing you can do to override it. Heaps of negative / same experiences on Whirlpool..and this thing was $1200. Absolute shite…I would warranty it, but my partner knocked over a sauce bottle and cracked the corner…and yes, it was faulty before the crack. But would give them an out.

        I now cook my steaks using an Aldi portable induction cooker.

        Again, actual rice boiling over wont trigger it until its a large boil over area.

        Mine is a 8 hob Whirlpool labelled unit. They hopefully have sorted it in new models.

    • Do silicone guards help with the auto shutdown issues? I know a lot of people use them between the glass and pots to protect from scratches…

      • Cheers, but the biggest issue is when you use the slider to turn on/ adjust temp. You constantly wash your hands during food prep / cooking.
        Slightest amount of moisture…and your shut down.
        I pulled the POS apart and took the glass off, but can't put my finger on what they use to detect a smear of moisture. Get rid of that and the thing would be awesome.

        • presumably it's a safety feature to prevent short circuiting? I've just been running plug in ikea induction hobs and they're awesome. Even thinking about skipping the full installed unit as above and just using three of them on a bench. Advantage is that you can hang them when out of use and if they die or get smashed, they're just $70 to replace.

    Actually, does anyone know how an induction stove detects moisture? I would LOVE to disable/ remove it. Manufacturer wont help in the slightest.
